Is it possible to learn better fundamentals even when you've developed a "style?"

Even if it's a poor one.

no, it does not, thats your reply.

Your "style" is probably compensating for a lack of mastery of the fundamentals

I think a more accurate way to phrase the question is: can you learn without destroying everything prior?

no. you will pick up traits from those you try to learn from, unusually they tend to be positive, why would you not want to improve?

Only slightly related to OP but how do you learn to draw when you only care about cartoons? Not anime but I don't give a shit about the real human body, it's ugly as shit.

you are able to technically refine your style if you learn your fundies. It will honestly only make you better.

Like everyone else. Learn how to simplify, understand form then apply it to wathever you want. If you don't like realism, then don't. Nobody cares, and those who do you shouldn't listen to. Basically do what you want.

can it be done? yes, is it recommended? no. anon the problem is that if you try to take shortcuts you will face problems later on that will severely slow you down. you need to know the physics behind the a 3d object in a 3d space. and you only want to draw normal cartoons/anime without thinking of lighting or at least perspective. you will learn anatomy whether you like it or not since you're drawing humanoid like creatures but they will look weird because they average person/critic (if you ever aim for a financial stand) is guided on the image of people.

i have a little experience with this.

>destroying everything prior
well, something will most likely change, that is for sure.
you will gain something, but you might also lose something. be it charm, or something innocent, or something else. even if you gain technique, the net result may still be negative. but even if it does, it doesn't mean that that can't change later on again.

i'd make a distinction like this:
>1. your style is rock solid already
>2. you kinda like your "style", but it is inconsistent, incomplete and severely lacking compared to what professionals do.
in case of 2. i'd just go ahead and do it, if just to move forward. your "style" is probably shit anyway.
in case of 1, dunno. it's your call. but i doubt your style is that consistent and perfect.

TLDR even if you turn worse, you'll probably benefit in the long run.

but i'm overthinking this, you're probably just like >>2182828 said. so just keep learning you asshat.

You'll only improve and refine it.
Which is not a horrible thing, studying and learning to be a better artist is never something that will hurt you.

Don't listen to this guy >>2183216

Style is the sum of everything you know about art. If you know a lot, your style is appealing. If you know fuck all your style more than likely looks like shit. You should be constantly trying to improve your style, fundamentals are one way of doing that. You should own and constantly work on your style, don't let it own you. Stopping yourself from learning something new because you think it will interfere with it is downright retarded.
