How can I draw cool characters and environments from my imagination like pic related?

I've been doing academic live drawing for many years now and rendering isn't much of a problem but I really want to draw nice designs without much reference, but when I try and draw it usually looks like uninspired shit, do I have no imagination?

You gotta fart like me.

Maybe try taking requests in a drawthread so you get loads of different ideas and go from there

Wut, I mean like how does the artist of that pic know that elongated skull + really big mane looks good? How does he come up with those shapes?

sense of composing shapes - and designing shapes. Its as much a part of drawing as really acute observational drawing is. A lot of traditional artist have done it in figurative stuff - flattening or pushing shapes for visual design purposes.

Its just something you practise - draw a lot more from your imagination and exaggerate things. Might help to also just doing some abstract excersises where you only think of shapes as visual element, detached from any figurative meaning.

good luck my friend, the force is with you.

Keeping in mind OPs pic is not exactly a sterling example of high level design, it's a pretty simple costume.

The artists probably draws a shit ton in their sketchbook just trying stuff out, taking things they've learned from studies about real life costume, skulls, animals, bugs and other stuff to combine a bunch of it into this. Maybe they did 50 versions of this one costume before coming up with what we have here. You have to be drawing a lot in your sketchbook trying and failing at stuff to learn what looks good and bad. That's why geting study disease and only drawing from life isn't great if you want to be an illustrator and not a fine artist, you have to practice imaginative work just as much.

While we're on this subject does anyone have good resources on making character pose/expression sheets? There doesn't seem to be a whole lot on the topic.

What does it look the character is just opening his mouth instead of making an actual battle cry?
Artist needs to scrunch up the top half of the face

Artist?

that image looks really flawed though. not only is it super random, it also has proportions that make him look like a t-rex: short arms and a big head compared to the body.

if you want to try designing, just experiment with shapes or silhouettes. do what looks interesting.
other than that, try to think about the character and his purpose, taste and such things
you probably have no imagination because you aren't trying. you need think about it more, experiment more and explore more.

You need reference in order to have a successful design. I've spoken to industry pros about reference and they say its essential. They say, even if there is no reference on screen in front of them, they can recall the exact reference images because they have used it so many times.

So what appears to be, FROM IMAGINATION, is still from reference in a way.

Just make sure you have a strong visual library and focus on using a lot of reference and then you can slowly "not use" reference.

Hope this makes sense. Good luck

That's exactly what I was thinking.

oh come on, that's shit, that's not design at all, just formal playing, nothing related with OP image
