Inking triggers me. I just can't ever get it right. The more I try to get it right the longer I take. I could end up inking a single naked figure for 6 hours. If I try to do it faster, it ends up looking less dynamic than the sketch.

Then after hours and hours of polishing the line art, I end up deleting most of it for the painting. What's the point then?

I hate everything, forever.

I haven't gotten into inking, but it sure is fun to watch.

Well, don't bother with inking if you plan on painting over it. Inked lineart is only used when the lineart itself is supposed to be present in the final image.

I like to ink, and I'm always interested in picking up new techniques. I can ink better traditionally vs digitally, but that really isn't saying much.

There are lots of anons around that are much better at it.

I have been trying some different things lately - I pencil the drawing first, then ink it, then scan and remove the sketch lines digitally. Even after tweaking the digital scan, it doesn't look as good as the traditional... Then I never know what to do with the lines once they are digital - it always looks more cartoony and less like an illustration.

Anyways, I usually post in the alt threads

I actually really like this. What kind of ink are you using?
I've been trying to ink with brush but it always looks weirdly transparent whenever I try.

Thanks!

I usually use Sumi ink. You can find it at stores in green plastic bottles. I'm trying out Deleter #4 which is pretty opaque too. Stuff like Higgins is very watery.

You won't hurt your brush hairs so long as you're careful and not just jamming it in like a dumbass. Also, if you're using sable haired brushes, you kinda wanna protect that hair best you can. Using water (or saliva) you can form the brush tip to a fine point and place the "cap" back on.

Here's an old piece I ink'd then later colored. I use a Winsor and Newton series 7 #1 round brush. Been toying around with other sable brushes and the only other brush I've used is the Escoda reserva brushes. Really nice quality stuff.

Well if I work in just black and white, I usually just use those Col-erase pencils to sketch out my drawing. The Stadetler "non-photo" blue pencils feel too waxy for me.

If I'm gonna watercolor my inked drawing, then I'll use a simple 2H, or HB pencil to easily erase my rough work. For inks I prefer the Winsor and Newton black ink (the one with the spider guy on it) it looks like it's the blackest ink and it dries to a nice opaque finish. So it won't loose it's blackness when you erase over it like some other inks.

what do you guys think of using pic related as an alternative to using a brush and ink

>> No.2176477

>>2176472
It's a great way to start. And it's cool to see people get a good line variation with micron and technical pens. personal preference though, if start out with nib pens and a bottle of ink. Some nibs are pretty flexible and can save you time in the long run with creating line weights. But brushes, though are daunting and have a steep learning curve, feel more satisfying to work with, if given time and practice.

>> No.2176514

>>2176477
I say go with a brush and put in the time. In the long run, the line will have more character, and inking will be faster. Smooth as silk.

No more gripping pens with your claw-like, carpal tunnel ravaged hands and scratching at paper anymore.

>Col-erase pencils
Is this just a brand name or do they actually erase? I read about a few people using these. If I order from Amazon, do you have any recommendations?

How do they compare to say prisma color?

>> No.2176530

>>2176523
Yes. They erase pretty well compared to regular color pencils. Not 100% though, but good enough for some pencil work to lay some ink over.

>recommendations

Personal preference is Blue, light blue, and some sort of red color. To be honest, it doesnr really matter the color if you're planning on getting, so long as it's a light color and not black.
