Because we should not have to make new threads or post in draw threads with our fundamental exercises. Feel free to post even the smallest exercise you have done to show you are still trying, do not give up.

Do not forget to resize and crop your images before uploading them otherwise the autists will complain.

Before asking "what should I read/view/study/learn," consult the sticky: >>1579290

This thread's study theme is dragonfly's, I'm going to post a couple due it being hard to narrow it down to one, do try pick one from the thread so were all on the same page.

How do y'all hold a pen(cil)?

Cus' up to this point I've held it very relaxed, very leaned down, close to the paper, especially when I'm drawing from the shoulder.

But now I'm doing this Peter Han thing, and he's saying to hold it at 90 degrees.

>> No.2165278

>>2165264
I moved to that grip a few months ago, and I'm glad I did. Partly because uneven wear on nibs is annoying as fuck.

None [or very little] of your control should come from your fingers, so the grip isn't terribly important so long as it is comfortable. If you're working traditionally, or with tilt-enable hardware, different grips have benefits depending on the stroke-type you're looking to achieve. For shading with the broad side of lead, you obviously can't hold the pencil at 90 degrees to the paper. And certain heavy inking styles rely on the brush being almost prone to achieve the desired look.

So basically, there are as many ways to hold your tool as there are artists. Just make sure you're not damaging yourself.

>> No.2165499

>>2165473

I would advise you to focus on doing simple gesture drawings using confident, defined action lines. Ideally this is from the neck down to the planted foot but whatever line better defines the gesture in 1 simple curve.

You seem to be new to tablet so maybe you should try drawing on paper. Just get scrappy paper or copy paper and go through a ton of it.

Also proper grip when not using a tablet: http://chiseledrocks.com/main/musings/topics/how_to_hold_the_pencilhttp://chiseledrocks.com/main/musings/topics/how_to_hold_the_pencil

When using a tablet try to still use your shoulder for drawing, never your wrist (except for really small details).

Aim for clean, simple lines. Do 30 second gestures AFTER you can do clean simple gestures that only have around 7 lines for example.

Peter Han's shit. It's basically doing core shapes, curves, and lines and whatnot, but without chicken scratching at all. You just do them and do them correctly.

Then you have to go over them seven more times without diverging the line at all.

It's pretty difficult. But he gave me some good tips on how to improve my larger circles / ovals, as well as keep better straight lines.

I'm just on lesson one.

For working out the basic values and forms I think this looks like I wanted it to, but I don't know how I paint past this point. As in, how to make it less block-y and less clearly made up of these basic brush strokes

1. Do I just use a smaller and smaller brush, adding more and more, new colors in between the current ones?
2. Do I turn the brush flow down and work out transitions like that instead?

No, that's just how it is. The point is to train the muscles in your arm. This is no different from athletic training of certain motions, or playing scales for music etc. The point is to build up muscle memory and get your brain to start soldifying a network of neurons devoted to properly controlling your arm and hand so you can make smooth lines from one point to the next. A lot of beginners have issues with this simple task and hence it's the first thing people are told to work on. If you are doing it and it's turning out well, congrats you already have some of the appropriate motor skills to start the very basics of making drawings.

Han does it freehand cause he's already good.

The point of the exercise is to practice drawing a straight line.

Can you draw a straight line freehand yet? If so you don't need this exercise. If not, use a ruler so you know what you are aiming for and practice. If you don't use a ruler, what exactly are you aiming for? What would be a perfect attempt? The squiggly line you put down initially? I don't think so. A perfect attempt would be a straight line. So use a straight edge or a ruler.

But you can do what you want. Good luck.

Please explain in more detail if the following does not relate, but I'm going to assume for now you are referring to trying to draw straight lines?

A few things

Lock your wrist, draw with your arm. Shakey lines and shit are generally because you are doing small motions, instead of big ones. You can draw straight lines easily if they are large motions using your arm, not your wrist.

Draw lines of various lengths, if you are only trying to draw small tiny short lines you're gonna get shaky shit. Draw lines that nearly go from one end of the page to the other.

Change up your speed. This shit might seem super simple and super basic but you gotta take your time and THINK about everything you're doing fam. If your lines are all wobbly and shit you need to go faster. If they swoop or curve smoothly you need to go slower. It's gonna take time to find that sweet spot, but once you do it's gonna be good, trust me.

Speaking of effort and stuff taking time, this shit takes practice bruh. Not everyone has already trained these muscles. It will take a week or so of daily practice at the absolute minimum to get better. Keep at it. Do not ignore it, focus and power through.

If you have time for that many cross contours on your forms you are doing it wrong. The goal is to portray motion and positioning of the limbs simply and with a flow to them. The amount of lines in those gestures lead me to believe you are spending way to much time on them. If you have this much time you need to spend more of your time observing and thinking before making those marks. In this particular case anon I'd say try to do more with less.

Pick a few landmarks on the body and show those and nothing more. The goal is to create a scaffolding that you can build the rest of the figure on top of.

Again, I can't claim to be an expert but less is more in my opinion. Pic related these are some of my attempts at gesture (1-2 minutes each).

The lines you're placing for directional view are messing things up. You don't need to place them when starting out, that and the way you're placing is not correct. IF you insist on using them then make sure it's pulling the viewer to the correct angle.

One more thing, simplify your lines. Focus on the gesture and ignore contours. If you're trying to do what Jeff Watts is showing here, stop. He has decades of experience which allows him to do that.

I might be the last one to figure this out, but in case I'm not, check out this sweet pro tip: if you're practicing ellipses, with your wrist locked and your moving you arm- try holding the pen like normal, between your thumb, middle, and index fingers. But the trick is, to let your middle finger lay on the paper as a guide instead of keeping it suspended with the other fingers. It's a fucking wonder.

What I mean by "slightly" is that I'm not a bachelor of ellipses as you may see from my shitty ellipses. I just snatched slightly more proper exercises from Han and Robertson.
As for exercises themselves you can approach number 3 differently: either you draw ellipse first and then mark it's axes or you can mark axes first(this is actually way harder) and then try to hit exactly where axes stop(as you can see I fucked it up). First teaches you to divide ellipse correctly and second, well, second is just for the sole reason of good old torture.
Number five is relatively simple once you get the idea of it. You create two-point corner and then try to snap your ellipse on both planes surfaces. Like mine cart or car or wheels. Minor axis of ellipse - and this is important will work as axle of these wheels. I like it because not only it helps ellipse skill grow, it also makes you practice ever so handy two-point itself! Just remember to put vanishing points off frame waay far because that will greatly help you guesstimate good looking two-point eventually.

But if you want to git gud I think it should be a 30/70 or 40/60 ratio since you will learn more by actually studying. But don't take me too serious. I'm by no means a good artist.

Get your hands on vilppu, hampton and loomis books or video lectures but important thing in making things less flat is thinking in 3D and it will come
almost naturally draw on the form of the head, You actually got it right on the lower right guy with his right eyebrow. The way it curves obeys the contour of the head
and isn't just placed like all of the other features.

No trapezoids applies to the lower hand right guy and the upper left guy you need a smoother transition to shoulders it does not just cut in like that.

re the thread, well there were only a handful of people doing it, , I don't think im connecting with what people want. seems they want to be drawing other things. might as well give someone else a turn.

Been doing "perspective made easy"

There's something off with this one and I'm not too sure. Should I space the vanishing points further away? Eyeline lower?

perspective gets weird when your shapes gets close to vanishing points. like that.

>> No.2169836

>>2169830
that odd line is the least of your problems, main ones are your construction is weird and bed is ahead of the wall. you should first fully draw the wall and then add other furniture. tho I didn't read that book, so I don't know what is the exercise.

I'll try next time. I don't really know what loomis' style is though as I only ever did "fun with a pencil" and I was just drawing goofy monopoly men all day.

I think I got the distance ok on this one but the object looks fucking retarded. (I know it should have been higher).

Did I at least get the vanishing points somewhat correct here?

it looks retarted because proportions are off and there are too many space between bed and wall. looks true technically tho

Generally speaking, no.
Unless they do live drawing sessions.

You can learn everything you need to know from home, it will also probably go much faster as well.

send help

the main issues i have is that I don't exactly know how to begin laying down values. i first set the canvas to a shade of grey i thought was closest to the background, then i did the same for my silhouette. after that point though, i kind of just picked at the largest general areas of colors i saw and tried to translate them to grey. i can't seem to get the general lighting down at the start, and i know that's important. what's frustrating is i thought the sketch was at least ok.

>> No.2170106

i got to the coloring section in bettys book and feel like i haven't advanced enough to continue. my values are shit, and my ability to draw lines that I want / see on the first try are shit. i spend a lot of time erasing and drawing lines over and over again. do i power through or supplement with some other exercises / resources?

In order to improve how long AND how much should you draw a day? I heard to 2 hours is the minimum, but what does /ic/ try to draw in in 2 hours? Been practicing construction and anatomy for 3 months now, and I have a problem, I can spend 2 whole hours doing nothing but copying/studying anatomy, then only getting like 3-5 reference drawings out, and then maybe one from imagination. i Guess I should be doing gesture, but how do I learn construction, anatomy, as well as rending from gesture? Its like its some balance between drawing fast and adding necessary detail.

Beginner here so take what I say with some skepticism. I'm pretty sure symbol drawing is where you draw what you think you see rather than what you actually see. Your brain sees a combination of lines and recognises it as a familiar object much like you see a symbol. Drawing things as you imagine they look rather than how they actually look.

Why are you all doing this stupid shit? You need milage not attention to the finest detail. Line work will come but only if you actually fucking draw. Stop wasting your time.
