Because we should not have to make new threads or post in draw threads with our fundamental exercises. Feel free to post even the smallest exercise you have done to show you are still trying, do not give up.

Do not forget to resize and crop your images before uploading them. This increases your chance of getting help and criticism.

Before asking "what should I read/view/study/learn," consult this link:
http://irishopp.hubpages.com/hub/how-to-draw-learn
If your question is related to Loomis perhaps you should consult this link as well.

This thread's study is a shark.

I'm really struggling with the concept of symbolic drawing and overcoming it. Should I use different values to differentiate between spaces instead of lines? I think I understand the idea of drawing something exactly as it is in real life but I cannot escape symbolism in practice.

Don't just fill in the shadows, crosshatch. Be mindful of proportions, measure things compared to each other. For example the right flap and the right side of the head are almost aligned where in the reference the right flap is more to the center. Learn how to represent values properly. For example under the mouth of the shark there is a little bright spot but you just left it completely white while in the reference it's slightly brighter then the rest of the shark. There is a long way to go anon but keep going at it.

erh... im not a gud drawer I only know how to see things, I think it depends whose method you follow.
eg this is peter hans fish from dynamic sketching series.

I think having a centre line defiantly helps. so you can establish the perspective vanishing point, then you can work out the correct placement of everything else.

just do this lightly. then you can concentrate on drawing a photorealistic shark over the top.

its more a case of this is what you should be doing in your head, but its okay to do it on paper till it comes naturally.

Nah, I think it's better when two people are on the same level, it seems like there's more of a back and forth than a one sided thing. Then again, neither are very good, so i'm full of shit...

ANYWAY, I think that one point is actually harder than two point, it's much easier for it to distort in one point than two. The cone of vision for one point is much more vague and harder to gain control of, at least for me. Two point, it's just the two VPs are the edges of the COV.

Hi guys, i'm an absolute begginer and today i bought some paper and charcoals (i think thats what they're called haha) so that I can begin drawing. Right now this is the first thing that i'm drawing and i'm happy with the shape of my drawing. What i dont know what to do now is how to properly shade my drawing. Any tips for absolute beginers?

>> No.2156156

>>2156152
dont be afraid to fail or you will progress really slowly. dont make "masterpieces" just practice. as for shading, draw what you see. pay attention to the soft transition of the shadow on the left, the diffusion of the holder thingy of the cup (it reflects the light on the shadowy area making that lighter).
also see that small spot of light on the inside of the cup? you will leave that as the only white spot on your image. everything will be darker. yes, reserve the entire "white color" for that little spot.

Normally the hatching and even the anatomical features should help to describe the form which you seem to be doing in some places but overall your drawings are too flat.
Hampton does exactly that, so if you have to study someone it's him.
Don't forget to apply perspective even when studying the body.
Your proportions are quite good though so I assume you already have some kind of knowledge on anatomy. If not you did a good job on that.

biggest problem I've encountered so far in this kind of study is proper scanning proportions from twisted and foreshortened object, like shark in OP, it's twisted and distorted by water, lens, it's position. all formal measures fail at this point because I don't know how to measure distorted objects.

You don't learn actual anatomy when drawing animu. Not to mention that drawing animu allows you to be lazy and draw features minimally (like a line for a nose) instead of learning how to draw humans. In addition to that, you're not learning how to see things in 3D space and construct using forms. You'd benefit a lot more from doing studies of RL people and then stylizing.

Almost everyone I've seen speaking on the subject has said "don't get the small, it's too small."

I suggest you save for a medium at least.
Also, bear in mind that wacom did some bullshit rebranding and their new Intuos (pic related) is basically a bamboo. It's not what most people are talking about in regards to an intuos. Pic related is 1024 pressure, while the intuos pro has 2048.

Do your research before you buy one. I'd suggest just saving for an Intuos pro or something if you're reasonably confident you'll stick with it. I've been using a bamboo create which is fine but I wish I'd gotten one with better sensitivity.

cute tends to be achieved through using baby-like proportions. large and wide set eyes, small noses, large foreheads and an underdeveloped mandible for example. Doing simplified caricatures can in some ways be more difficult as each detail ends up having more impact on the drawing. If your mouth is just a line, then it has to be perfectly placed and perfectly shaped in order to convey a structure as complex as a mouth. My advice would be to do studies of actual children and babies before trying to establish some sort of style.

also be careful using the word minimalism, as it refers to a very specific time in art history and tends to not mean what people think it means.

South america, actually. Particularly in my country the only options from official distributors are Intuos Pen Small, Intuos Pen & Touch (S and M), Intuos Pro (also S and M) and then we get into rare Cintiq territory. I would gladly buy it from amazon if it wasn't for the fact that there's a high risk of getting your imported buy retained when entering the country, and if you wanrmt it back you gotta pay like half of it. I don't know the details, I only know shit's tough and the situation changes only if you're very lucky.

We live in a day and age where the whole world is connected, where the Internet is a sea of opportunities and everything is possible no matter who you are... unless you're a guy who wants a drawing tablet at reasonable price. It's not that I lack the money, it's just that I don't wan to feel anally raped when paying so damn much for a medium sized tablet.

you should probably nevermind complex anatomy for now, rather just learn to construct and measure properly. see pic related, the abs actually describe a V shape rather than the sort of parallel shape you drew, also measure:
> space between hands and torso vs width of the hips
> compare: size of the left and right 'boob'
> size of his balls, you really gave them a lot of love in your drawering

for quick gesture and anatomy studies i'd suggest using pencil and paper, but if you feel confident on a tablet by all means stick with it.

studies are generally preliminary works meant to explore an idea or focus on some particular aspect of an idea with the help of reference material, either a photo or from life. this is to work out the potential problems and learn a bit about what it is you are about to try and create before diving into creating something from the imagination. generally a "study" form the imagination is not a considered a study for this reason.

also, this is not at all a "bizarre" idea and is a basic concept dating back at least to the renaissance.

That's why. Get yourself an HB, and probably an H or 2H. Delicate and smooth graphite drawings come from:
-Keeping a sharp lead
-Many layers of lead put down with a light touch, either with circular motions or lines very close together and in the direction of the form (like crosshatching)
-Cleaning up "specks" and inconsistincies in tone by dabbing lightly with a kneaded eraser
-Layering your graphite to smooth everything out. Fill the spaces in the paper with your softer leads (B) and then go over them again with harder (H). You'll fill in the little specks more each time and get it smooth. Don't worry too much about that though.
>Only layering leads anywhere in the order of 6B - HB - 6H. Basically, you can put an HB over a B, and an H over that, a higher number H over that one, but don't jump around in the same spot. Putting a B over an H will make your drawing look shit and waxy.

By the way, not to bash your tastes or anything but that guy is okay at best. Honestly isn't that great. It's a very rough sketch that shows a process, yes, but that needs a lot more work to be even close to gud.

Stuff like this. It's difficult to find good graphite-only still lifes around though. Because you can't get graphite extremely dark from the nature of the material, people tend to add in charcoal in places. Values are relative to each other though so really it's not hard to work around.

Still lifes in graphite are a bitch but they're worth it for the technique gains.

I'm seeing too many useless lines that add nothing. If you want to add more depth to those limbs, actually focus on making sure it's angled to the correct degree. Those surface lines will add nothing since it's not correctly placed.

Another thing is that it seems as if you're just placing in lines quickly rather than observing first and making a visual guide of where to lay the lines. Just know that drawing fast isn't a good thing if you don't know anything. People who do draw fast good started by drawing slow early with everything in mind.

Using real 3D models can be useful for reference. The line quality is quiet terrible, practice Week 1 of Peter Han's line exercises every day to get the hang of things. But sure to do it traditional and on pen.

Thanks! I thought gestures were supposed to be done quickly so I rushed them, I'll start paying more attention to the lines now.
