"To any man who has slaved to acquire skill in his art, it is most irritating to have his ability referred to as a gift. Perhaps there is one genius in a hundred years or more who can achieve perfection by divine inspiration. I have never met such a man, and I do not know any successful artist who did not get there by the sweat of his brow."

Previous Thread: >>2138672

A general message to aspiring artists: "Lack of knowledge can be greater torture than the effort of acquiring it. When all is said and done, nature is your best instructor."

Submit your drawings, receive feedback or critique others! Share your knowledge and remember to thank those who've critiqued or red-lined your drawings. Most importantly, have fun.

This thread is meant for artists who might want to try to make stylized work in-between their studies. It is strongly recommended that you use this thread in conjunction with learning the elements and fundamentals of art. You can also discuss the visual elements of various professional artists as well if you keep it relatively articulate and civil.

honestly the plots pretty stupid, and not in a fun way. it just looks like a bunch of randumb shit without much coherency.
I'd also say if you're going to do it in 4 koma format you should keep in might the stages.
of scene, foundation, climax, conclusion. but that's more in the comic part of it rather than the art style. and even if its no a 4koma exactly, comics typically follow that format unless you're doing a full story, in which case you would want a different style of paneling.
squared off panels like this suggest separate parts rather than following through, even though you can continue in that format is typically isolated parts which all follow the same format but share a story.

Focus less on trying new style and more on getting your humans to look at least somewhat accurate.

The major sore spot here is the inconsistent thickness of arms, noodlearms on the right, and the junction between shirt/pants.

However, as a tip, for what you appear to be going for, read google's design guidelines at https://www.behance.net/gallery/9028077/google-visual-assets-guidelines-part-1

Yeah, the plot is pretty garbage now that I look at it.

It's supposed to be a continuous comic, not a series of 4koma, although there isn't too much that ties separate pages together in that case, which would explain why it doesn't seem to flow. Similarly, the stages aren't planned out nearly as well as they should be.

It's supposed to be the beginning of a "full" story, which means I probably shouldn't have used a 4 panel setup for the first two before breaking out of it, as that's inconsistent and messy.

>> No.2145216

>helps show the shape of the head
Draw from the inside out.

Skull and skeleton (or at least body structure) then layer a "shell" of hair over the top and manufacture flow.

Similarly you should layer clothes on top of a body's form, not draw clothes and try to show that there's a body underneath.

beginner thread roughly translates to gesture drawing and low self confidence general with a few beginners who just get told the same generic advice without any actual criticism.
I don't think there's any issue with beginners posting in any thread as long as they keep the issue straight and to the point and aren't so terrible that its beyond help.
Like the one in question,
>is there anatomy issues?
response
>yes X, Y ,Z, maybe W

the bigger issue is that it is stylized and you should know by now the response that would get in other threads regardless of how well its done.

isn't advice for a beginner, its straight criticism on what's wrong and needs to be fixed. I don't see why you have this hate boner for beginners. "neck isn't centered" is a pretty easy fix and once someone is told what's wrong it becomes obvious to them.
I guess I'm sounding overly defensive here, and I get why someone would assume the beginner thread is a good place, but I don't see why you're being super elitest in a stylization thread of all places.

i'm not really. you are the one telling me i shouldn't refer people to the beginner thread.

>what type of advice is that? paper is paper.
well, it's more about the habit of keeping a skeetchbook. a digital sketchbook is fine too. it's my way of saying "draw more and draw constantly"

>> No.2145284

>my way of saying draw more constantly
okay I get that then, I just grew up drawing on whatever loose paper I could find laying about so I couldn't care less what it was. figured you were being retarded about sketchbooks in general.
>person in question is a beginner so it won't help
then how is referring them to the beginner thread any better? I doubt anyone who is asking for critiques on a specific portion of their work, regardless of skill, will ignore specific advice tailored to them. if a beginner comes in and asks for about a specific issue it typically means they know -something- is wrong even if they don't know what it is, and being told what that something is will help them far more than telling them just to stumble around in the dark until they find it.

>> No.2145301

>>2145284
>..will ignore specific advice tailored to them.
it's not about ignoring, it's about where they stand as an artist. if you're a beginner, it's better to work on fundies rather than "correcting your mistakes". like i said, they don't have any of the experience needed in order to "correct their mistakes", even if you point it out to them.
it's like you said, they are stumbling in the dark. so even if you tell them the drawing is lopsided, they will still be stumbling in the dark. it's better to show them the general direction in this case.

look at this exchange >>2145202 >>2145208 >>2145216. in my opinion it's just pointless.

its not always about correcting the mistake, sometimes its an issue they've been having and need clarification. for example for the longest time I had issues with color theory and it took someone beating it into my face that you don't overlay contrasting colors like that.
Its not so much correcting the piece as getting advice they can keep in mind for future drawings. being told directly that your "leg to waist ratio is fucked" is easy to keep in mind and fixes the problem almost immediately.
the exchange you pointed out wasn't even that bad, guy critiqued, other guy explained why a certain part of the critique was done that way, guy told him it was stupid and there are better ways of doing it, and it was done.
All I don't get is why you're so against giving beginners advice. It literally does no harm and it usually helps.
>they don't have experience to correct their mistakes
you don't need experience when told you're doing something wrong, you now know you did it wrong and you fix it in the future. you can critique someone's learning process as well as just their finished pieces.

Face is better than most, which is good. Hair and ribbons appear to flow naturally.

Arms are slightly thick but that's personal preference.

I feel that her left arm/shoulder may be placed ever so slightly high. Try tracing her shoulder joint through her body and I think you'll find it lands a tad lower.

Although the ribbon/knot on the bottom half is centered on her spine, the ribbon on the top half of the swimsuit appears to be more to her right.

As the other anon mentioned, wrists look like they were taken from TF2's Pyro. Additionally the thumb section of the palm on the left hand is slightly fatter than it should be compared to the "main" palm.

why are you even so mad kek. you got hostile way too quick, is this some kind of jelly or something?

>>2145893
it's not a small problem, it's a fundamental problem i see with your faces.
it's kind of hard to explain, and i don't know exactly to draw like you do, but these are the main issues
>the eyes slide off the side of the face
>the face is almost completely round
>your faces take up too much space in relation to the head.
it may just look like a style thing (and it is, to an extent), but the way you draw it makes it hard to place the features correctly, you probably also have issues drawing the side and 3/4 view right? this is the reason why.
it also makes it more difficult to place and organize the hair. and the way you place the neck and ears don't help either.

be more aware of the sides that the face has. a small face is what makes certain styles so appealing.
again, a concrete tip is to avoid making the far eye touch the outline of the face too easily. for example it normally shouldn't touch in 3/4 view. (depending on the style)
if at all, it should only happen in an almost profile view.

to add another thing, when drawing the 3/4 view and other angles, you tend to keep the placements as if it was the front view.
it's pretty much part of the same problem as the issue in my previous post.
again, be more aware of the different planes of the head.

i tend to draw a line signaling the center of the head/spine (see red line). that helps me be more aware of which side the character is facing.

Smurf's skill level is nothing that warrants jealousy. /ic/'s porn thread has artists that shit on him in terms of understanding fundamentals. I'm "mad" because his attitude is still shit and never changes. He's always making excuses rather than doing what he needs to do and study fundamentals. Fucker needs Loomis but is too caught up in "mah style" garbage while not having the fundamentals and understanding to make it convincing in the first place. Hence, why his work is trash. But he refuses to acknowledge that despite multiple people telling him the same thing. People graduate art colleges and earn degrees with god awful art and he thinks good grades in an art class validates his shit work. Maximum kek.

Pretty nice anon. The scale doesn't read well though. Like the amount of details in the trees and their distances and their sizes are all a bit conflicting. Like the tree to the left of the figure is hard to tell how far it is, but it reads sort of like a tiny tree right next to him. Same with the way the rocks are painted on the mountain face given how far they are supposed to be they don't really read at the proper scale.

The spotlight you have going on feels a little heavy handed/forced. I would make it more subtle and maybe bring some light into the rest of the image as well. Make it feel a bit more natural, you know?

Also the film grain is a bit overdone for my taste.

Anyway I really suggest drawing SKULLS from a good photo reference (like a 360° turnaround)

As for planes, look into the Asaro head or any other head construction (loomis, hampton, vilppu, etc)

right now it's like, you're thinking that if you do 10 of each you'll improve, but that's not the case.
there is no point if you don't do it properly. one or two accurate sketches (even if you have to correct them over and over) are better than 30 completely wrong ones.

especially if you are drawing from life/photo, try to take in as much of the shapes and relationship as possible.

your studies can't even really be called studies at this point.

Not this guy but I've seen comparable works that are stylized in the same way for the proportions. If you want to complain about something complain that the hands positions doesn't fit the position of the sword.

This is the stylized drawing thread for god sake, next you're gonna complain that her eyes are too big ? Looking at the size of the sword, horns, hairs and clothes, literally everything is exaggerated on purpose.

Please stop reading what you want to read, I criticized myself the pic in my post.

There are two problems with you guys here.
You focus on things that aren't the point at all here, aka the proportions of a stylized body.
And next, you're acting all high and mighty, "this is shit, redo it", stop that already, it's more annoying than anything.

Now, to talk about things that matters more for this piece. Indeed, the perspective of some parts of it doesn't make much sense. If the feets are supposed to be on the ground that doesn't fit.
There are others errors like the left horn being bigger, both not doesn't seems to be well positioned either. right arm proportions are wonky (form is too long, rest is weirdly attached).

Overall pics looks good thanks to a good render, but when you bother to look at the details as an artist you can see the flaws.

Guys complaining that the feets are big are fucking retards.

... or simply that what was pointed it is wrong ? Or intended ? A critic isn't necessarily true. I see way too much people losing their shit when the guy doesn't agree with what got said.

> It is not a personality of someone feeling godlike, it is essential for someone to tell it the way it is no matter how polished or well colored a piece is.

It's the way you say it, as simple as that. Calmly explain what is wrong, what could be easily, or not fixed, and even the good points. I really don't think forcing on your opinion or critics on others is a good way to work, aren't we drawing because we like it ? Chill out bruh.

get the entire head shape down first. you're doing everything too vaguely. especially when it comes down to the shape of the head/hair. you seem to think that it's not important at all?
the chin is too small on both skulls. see pic related for the rest. your eyebrows are often too high, the nose is often too long (measure it more, you'd be surprised). the shape for the head is almost always completely wrong, even with the skulls there are mistakes.
definitely not good enough yet.

(it would probably be good to switch to a pencil for this so you can correct yourself. maybe add some shading as well. sometimes mistakes will become more obvious once you do that.)

They are all nice except for the one you hid behind the pastry shelf.
It may be perfectly logical to hide the hand but as an image, it reads a bit awkward as if her hand is amputated.
Notice how you drew all the other hands with a meaning or nice gesture.
I would suggest scooting the left girl's mug more toward her right so that she is cupping it with both hands. (only my suggestion)

It's a very nice pic. I appreciate the little details with the food. love when artists do that. However this makes the lack of details in the chairs, window, etc all stand out.
I think a little more atmosphere would be good, even something like more unified colors.

>get the entire head shape down first
It's easy for me to get lost in the details too early - gotta stay disciplined

>eyebrows are often too high, the nose is often too long
This makes sense, my faces are usually too long and by the time I get to the bottom of the chin, I have to squish in the mouth to fit in the landmarks I made earlier.

>definitely not good enough yet.
thanks for your patience, I only have a couple hours to study each day so my progress is pretty slow, but it's great getting feedback

Alright, so I guess that's a composition problem.
If I was to redo that part now, I would probably want to at least hint at the hand behind there to show it exists, correct?

It was the first time I even bothered doing a full background and I was afraid that too much details around would make it too busy, but I guess that did the opposite effect.

Thanks for the advice!

Help with my yaois, please? I particularly need help/redline on the boner . . . the bed which is supposed to be an over sized coffin and just . . . yeah, this is a mess.

Yeah but there are many other ways to deal with that area as well. It's not necessary to show all the hands obviously, but I think it makes for a better considered picture if you crop the arm somewhere but that crop is significant. In other words, if there is something to make up for the truncation of the hand, such as a big fabulous cake on top of the pastry shelf (this can also have the extra effect of breaking up the static line of the windowsill). You can really take this in a lot of directions. I think this image is full of potential.

As it is right now the BG does seem empty but you don't have to add many details to it. You are right that too many details can be distracting. But on the other hand, I think it's important to show that you have considered every part of the image and made a conscious decision to keep it simple. A very small thing can make big difference. e.g. a subtle pattern on the walls, details on the wooden molding, a slight hint of curtains on the top, or a simple picture frame.

Also I forgot to mention before but the facial expressions are very lively and cute.

Again, thanks for all the advice!

So I have worked more on my hands and lines.
I'd also like more feedback and criticism on this drawing I made, please.

Well, it's not good, it's very flat.

But don't feel bad, you have at least taken the first steps at mastering anatomy. Do it again, and this time try feel all dimensions of what you are drawing.

When you are aware of how the lines will flow due to the shape and mass it will start to feel solid and have weight.

I see, I will fix the flat issue, thank you for the critique

I'd say work hard on fundamentals with Humans and Anatomy on the side. What you have right there is really not much of anything much less a figure.
