>> No.2144480

>>2144475
Reference is not cheating. Anyways, looks kinda cool, I like the unorthidox method of rendering. The design is pretty weak though, just random unappealing shapes and not much functionality. Also the style and symmetry is well suited for a graphic approach, so I think you should continue the light background down behind him at the bottom as well rather than using dark values there. I'd also grab some reference for the face as right now the proportions and perspective of all the features are just a tiny bit off and it is throwing it off.

>> No.2144493

>>2144480

Thanks a lot dude, yeah you're right i need to introduce some nice edges here and there and some more interesting values, as well as spend more time on the design. I think the pose is super stiff, not sure how to get rid of that habit but I guess gesture drawing will help me! Thanks again man.

Will use a face for reference next time, I might attempt a full piece, but I will push this one even further before I move on.

PS- Cheating as in, photobashing or textures or w/e :P

That was somewhat intended. I was trying to to do a hard lighting on her chest, with the bounced light going to her face, as I was inspired by a chinese painter who uses a similar lighting situation long ago. I also intended to go way darker with her face, but I lighten it up anyway. Clearly it was not enough.

>>2142737
About the lighting, see above.
I'll concede about the cloth. I'll probably get to fixing it later probably.

fyi anon you can use the 1 pixel pencil tool in photoshop to draw just like in paint. On top of that you have much more options like layers and keyboard shortcuts.

Her eyes seem to be the most off. Their position (too close together), shape, and where they are looking are completely different from the photo. For starters look at the position of her left eye in relation to her nose. And I don't think the freckles are translating well. it looks like acne. Unless you wanted it to look like that.

Yeah, it looks like I started to care less about proportion the further from her face I drew.

>>2144535
It's a step up from the one in the old thread. Your lines around the face are more concise and accurate, but they still lack the quality to make the picture any good. Honestly, if you're going to keep using msPaint, then you should do this drawing in a light gray, then use the curved line tool in black to get the clean lines you want.

Also the freckles are not reading at all as freckles. You lack any sort of line variation and it makes the rest of the picture very busy and labored. The eye has no place to rest. At least fill in the dark areas with a bigger brush and focus on making your lines with the least amount of strokes as possible.

the 1 px brush is kicking your ass.

how long does it take you guys to finish artwork? Like a commissioned one. How about the ones you post in here?

>> No.2145185

>>2145179
Finished artwork should be around 10 to 20 hours of work for a full illustration. Characters should be less. Stuff people post in here is usually from 30 minutes to a couple hours of work.

>> No.2145212

>>2145139
Characters don't feel grounded in the environment, and the lighting isn't consistent across characters and the background. I think you need to take more time in planning out your big value shapes compositionally, and in turn plan out and identify all of your light sources in the scene and their relative strength. It feels like you have a vague idea of what you want your lights to do, but you aren't consistent enough with it to really sell it.

Characters feel off balance. No real sense of weight or counterweight, everything is near massless. In fact, when I saw the initial drawing you posted I assumed the girl on the left was sitting on a counter or ledge. You also have the girl on the right lifting 100+lbs on only her lower back. A lot of this can be excused in pin-ups, but I do think you could take more care to sell it to the audience.

Lastly to throw in my two cents, I sincerely hope that this isn't the only type of content you draw and paint. Granted it's an anonymous board, or maybe you don't post anything but your WoW(?) lesbian pinups, but I want to make sure you're expanding beyond your clear comfort zone. Do you attend life drawing classes? Do you sketch people in the park? Do you draw vehicles and buildings on the street? Do you go outdoors and do some plein air studies of nature? Do you do master studies? I worry that you might be cycling in your own little circle, repeating the same content and dooming yourself to make the same mistakes because you aren't branching out, and you aren't observing life. If you do study from life already, then that's great and keep it up. Nothing wrong with having a niche you enjoy drawing either way.

There's your chance to play around with thumbnails to try out different lighting schemes very quickly, then pick the strongest and gather/shoot references if needed. If you don't have a strong idea of your lighting early on in the process, you run the risk of having confused/inconsistent lighting.

>yeah, I do photo studies, little bit life sketches and so on I just dont post it
That's fair. Be sure your doing still life paintings in addition to your sketches. Nothing teaches you more about painting realistic light than painting something that's lit in front of you where you can easily identify and control all the light sources to your liking. Grabbing a lamp and painting an apple on your desk will teach you a lot about light - more than the average photo study will. Right now I feel your ability to depict light is consistently weaker than your drawing ability from the stuff you've posted over the last while.

i dont even know wha the fuck em i doing anymore. ive recently realised that everything i have been doing till now is drawing with FINGERS and bit of a WRIST.
pic related is what happens when i force myels not to do it and just lock the fingers in place - million of sketchy lines everywhere. i just cant seem to get any precise lines down.

ever since the realisation few days ago, it feels like im doing something terribly terribly wrong

id be most thankful for any advice on how what to do in order to fix this

There are no tools, only rules.
If you draw nicely with your wrist, by all means do it. It's just suggested to draw with your arm because it distributes the stress better. Your arm and all its parts will not fail under the same stress that will damage your wrist. Also, if you train it, you get better line control. You don't need to draw with your arm.
It looks a lot like most of your lines are rushed guesses. Slow down and think of each line, practice each line before you put it down. Don't use erasers or ctrl+z, learn how to put a line where it belongs the first time through

these are quite confusing I recommend learning to partition value ranges.

For example, stick a 3 separate value rangers for background, middle ground and foreground, that way your image reads a lot lot better. Here's an example of what Im talking about.

the back leg is actually drawn like she is opening her legs. like more than 90 degrees. have the back leg come more towards us and draw a more rounded knee. A problem I see is that the legs also don't look like they are coming from the same pelvis.
draw the other arm. where is it?
the bun placement is not aligned. One bun is coming from the side while the other looks to be almost directly on top of her head.
The cloth on the back of her sailor fuku is to squiggly.
I get that the extremely curly hair is stylistic but maybe have the one tail closest to us be pointing more up since she is jumping down.
eye closest to us should be closer to the nose.
neck isn't really connecting to the base of the skull.
forehead is a little short.

I thinking you did a pretty good job! it looks good.

>>2145517
you have furry lines because you aren't committing to a line. once you put down your pen, don't lift it up until it's the curve you want it to be. Practice that and you'll be okay!!!

There's tons of ways to do lines in PS, so look for lining tuts to see how other people do it. But this is what I do;

Sketch it out, then make new layer for lineart and use fast, confident strokes. Abuse the undo-hotkey until you get the right line laid down. Repeat until everything's lined. It's a bit tedious but I prefer it over other techniques I've seen.

Also, her clavicles are jacked up. They'd either be straight (shoulder to shoulder) or they'd dip down slightly at this angle. And the gap between them is too wide.

Thanks, man, appreciated.

With your painting, just try to keep in mind that the closer you are to the camera the range of value will increase. You can still use brights in the foreground, but the darks will be darker. If for example 1 is darkest and 10 lightest then try to keep it so that in the background you'll use the range from 5-10 and in the foreground you'll use a 1-10 and so on.
It's pretty simple, I really only did a small value adjustment on the foreground.

It's a bit ambiguous as to what is behind them--the sun? moon? explosion? The soft edges on it are kind of confusing, as is the massive size.

Also the image is really flat at the moment and the composition feels a bit too static/boring.

Maybe try to find some better ref, and see what makes them work. Pic related shows the colours of a sunset and makes the sun a stronger lightsource and really pushes the mood aspect to levels that yours doesn't. Figure out why you want to show that angle with the sun behind them, and how to show it well and what it would mean.

Form comes before values or rendering. You need to tighten up your drawing first before jumping into painting.

Her proportions are all over the place, for example, her head is terribly big for her torso. The skull also looks squished by her headband.

Another is the way you painted her face. Remember, when painting, you are actually sculpting a subject using light. How you apply values dictates how she exist in 3d space. Her facial features sink and protrudes in a funny way, especially around the eyebrow ridge and eye socket. Get a reference picture, or light yourself in front of a mirror.

Values are okay, but you might need to consider the bounce light coming from her surroundings. If your intention is to stylize, remember that when you approach the rendering in realism style, it would highlight the 'uncanny valley'-ness factor by a lot.

Anyway, when painting a young woman's face, one way to cheat is to use much softer rendering style, and to downplay the form shadows on her face.

Wrong thread to ask the question. But uh, it takes a long time to do good portraits. You need to study the skull, the planes of the face, some construction, the individual features etc. There are many books and videos that cover these to a greater or lesser degree.

>>2147104
I won't list the proportion issues out since that would be too nitpicky and might not be as useful, but I'd advice to study the skull more. Vilppu has some really good lessons on it if you can find it. And also be sure to mirror your painting always, especially during the early stages. This is critical, to check the proportions, alignment, and general composition. I did a quick paintover, but it's far from perfect, especially with the proportions, but I try to iron out what I can.

Other things to point out, with that kind of lighting, you can play around with subsurface scattering. This is apparent usually on the edges of shadows, and if the light came from behind, the ears. The light bounces around inside the skin, against blood capillaries, reflecting the highly saturated reds.

You can also introduce more hues and colors. Even if you're aiming for something low key, some subtle hues can still be introduced.

About eyes, it's important to avoid giving her 'almond' shaped eyes. The curvature on the upper arc, and lower arc, if possible, not be in the same place.

About the design, the upper part of the corset thingy doesn't flatter her breasts in terms of shapes. It makes it look saggy. Try experimenting with shapes there.

Anyway, I can see that you have the general idea of the head down when you render her skin, but you still need to be careful with the forms.

I like your attitude, so I'm going to spend the time to explain this to you. The face does read flat. The individual features are OK, but they're placed as if the face is flat.

Consider the nose and the mouth. They should both sit on (and therefore take on the perspective of) the denture sphere, which is like half an egg (cut lengthwise) glued on top of the lower half of the face.

The eyes as you drew them are in a straight line, whereas they should together form a slight curve (up or down, depending on head tilt... probably down like a smiley face in this drawing, because you see more the top of the head than the underside of the chin, so the head is tilted ever so slightly down). This is because the basic volume of the face is a cylinder.

Good luck.

Looks messy, but I like the idea. Might be cool if you went with a more graphic approach, or something akin to editorial illustrations.

Thank you fpr taking the time out of your day to write this. I get where you're coming from, lately I've been doing Reilley head abstractions studies and now I think I didn't apply those guidelines as well as I should have in this thing from imagination. I'm scared of samefacing I guess, don't want to use a mold too much out of that fear? Especially in the muzzle area I've foregone it. Again, thanks a bundle. I'm going to see if this is salvagable or if I just need to go and start over entirely.
