Watching the interviews of instructors on Jeff Watt's youtube channel made me realize one thing:

even THESE absolute gods struggle to get by and pay the bills. we are fucked. we are all fucked. art is a thoroughly worthless pursuit. i should have become an engineer. would still allow you to become a better artist despite not being able to commit to it 100%. but you would make up for that in mental health, expendable income, early retirement, lotsa savings, a loving wife and family to motivate you and provide creative stimulus (good luck starting a family as an artist, much less finding a remotely wifeable woman)

all art is garbage. you are all fucked. i'm fucked. i hate you for not talking me out of this.

I wouldn't call the teachers at Watts "absolute gods". Realize too that they are A) in fine arts which is fickle and can be difficult to make money off of, and B) choose to spend much of their time teaching at a school that prides itself on affordability and low costs.

If you are pursuing art solely for monetary rewards, then yes it is a foolish thing to do because, while it is possible to get rich off it, the likelihood of making lots of money is low and it takes years to reach that point.

Most professional artists I know are married and have a family and make a comfortable living. Sakimichan makes more money per year than the entire teaching staff of Watts Atlier combined. Nowadays loads of mediocre artists are making more money with fanart and webcomics than established art directors are making thanks to patreon. This is the best time to ever be alive to become a professional artist.

There is nothing wrong with the dream, the problem is that you were the one dreaming it. You are the kind of person who will never succeed in anything you do. You will always be a defeatist loser, whether that is as engineer, artist, garbage man, office worker... it doesn't matter, it's you that is the problem.

Just keep it art a hobby And pursue something worth while. You'll thank me later.

having a successful career in art is easier than it ever was before. Frustrated noobs really need to start dealing with the reality that it's not the industry that's the problem. There are just so many successful artists everywhere, your argument completely falls apart.

You are correct, OP. Give it up if you have the chance.

Fantasy illustration is an over saturated field. Anyone with eyes and an internet connection can see that. Unfortunately most people are lacking a brain, because there are many other easier avenues of illustration to pursue. They don't involve space marines and dragon priestesses.

I dunno, i decided to go for an art career because
A) I'm lazy
B) Art is the only think I'm remotely interested in
C) I do a lot of drugs
Even if i struggle to pay bills, its better than working at taco bell

This. Loads of people want to be freelance illustrators, but they just focus on the illustration part and completely neglect the freelancing side of things. Learning to find and maintain good work is a skill that needs to be learned and practiced just like illustration.

Unfortunately, no one on this board can envision a career in illustration that doesn't involve drawing space marines and dragon priestesses.

The freelance side is tough. People don't teach you how to to deal with clients, contracts, payments, negotiation, finding work etc.

I've only been able to scrape by due to trial and error and some help from people already in the industry.

If you want to get into art, and still make money at something technical there are a few options. Architecture design can be an artistic and creative outlet in the right areas and is still very lucrative if you can learn the math that powers it.

3d is also an art dependant technical field. While it is flooded with entry level modellers, learn one of the more nuanced aspects like rigging or animation and you will be fine. Most 3d jobs involve a ton of artwork and working with other artists so that can be rewarding. Just avoid major studios, they pay shit and are a nightmare to work for.

Also do not go to the 3d board on 4chan if you want to be excited about 3d as art. They are miserable people who just model assault rifles mostly.

Go to somewhere like zbrushcentral.com or some other major 3d forum and see some pros sculpts and stuff. It is real art

If you started drawing with an end goal of getting rich off of it you're an idiot.

This is coming from a hobbyist who chose an equally economically useless pursuit as my passion (history), but I didn't pursue it planning to roll in cash.
