That's a little harsh man. I think your comment about the digital stuff is wrong too. Like I see what you're saying because his digital is painted without opacity or texture so it feels very flat and sterile/boring, but that's an easy fix. I just threw a paper texture on overlay over his image and it seems to help with unifying the colours and strengthening values, and the texture makes it look way more "authentic" as an ukiyo style thing.

Not the other anon, but perhaps he is referring to the fact that some of the 2012 ones are more ambitious or interesting. Like he tried some different things out, like getting some different types of materials, doing that in flight creature high above clouds, a huge city in the distance, a robot etc. 2013 is bettet painted but feels more comfort zone safe stuff, like either a blank generic landscape or a character just standing there in a blank bg or field.

Thanks. I just made a schedule and started studying every day instead of once every few months, and learned to poise through the fact that I didn't have a clue what I was doing with anything but portraiture, 6 months ago I couldn't paint landscapes at all, I didn't even know how to begin, I started doing master studies and most importantly used what I was learning in imagination pieces. I also started experimenting with different ways of working and got involved with online communities like daily spitpaint and brainstorm. You should try to learn to paint things without the crutch of pasting photos in. Sure, photobashing is a valid technique for professional work and I get that you want to practice it, but when you are still learning basics of imagemaking I think you will gain more from learning how to paint it from scratch.

Learn how to paint a good texture instead of slapping it on the artwork like a lazy piece of shit. If you're going with the comic book style, learn to work with gradients and small texture details, learn color theory real good. Just, whatever you do, avoid throwing a fucking overlay paper texture on your work.

>> No.2136007

>>2136000
Nothing wrong with slapping a texture over an image. Sure, the example there was a quick and sloppy way of doing it just to show the general idea, but it's possible to do with subtlety (maybe masking parts out or whatever). I think it can lead to a very different look than if you only use texture brushes. Both are interesting, and you should try to avoid blanket statements forbidding it.

Digital tends to be very sterile and artificial by it's very nature. Colours don't mix the same way as pigments, brushes are limited in the variety of marks they can make and tend to repeat exactly, natural textures don't just build up. You need to make up for this any way you can, and this can include overlaying a texture or photo or whatever.

It means your drawings are flat and you aren't thinking of things as 3D objects. Ergo you've never sat to actually study how to construct the basic 3D forms and understand how light affects them, much less actually learn to construct drawings out of them them.

Some of your drawings do make it look like you have an idea of form, but since it isn't consistent, I'd imagine the person who told you that made an educated assumption that you are just guessing your way around.

i dont see much progress personally in my things.

2014 i got pretty ill. So I didnt draw much.

2001-2013 I didnt have many pictures of art work I done, seem to have had lost the vast majority of it. Or it's away in boxes in storage some where.

This year I'm focusing on my career, I have two small town art shows coming up, first I've ever done. I dont think I'm good enough yet for it, but I may as well give it a try. Ive only just started hanging my paintings up. My flat mates really like them so yeah thats the only reason they're up.

Like I said in 2014 I got pretty ill so I stopped and left college too. Picked up my paints again this year. Going over things again from the beginning. Perspective has always given me bother.

There's your problem. It's not finished if you still see problems in it that you can fix. Instead of ditching it why not spend another day or two or however long it needs working on it. After you fix everything you can possible spot as being wrong THEN you can say it is finished.
