You are given the opportunity to go back in time to your past, still novice (or more novice) self and give yourself two art related pieces of advice: On thing you suggest you should do, and one thing you suggest you shouldn't.

What do you say?

1. don't get into art in the first place. become an engineer or a programmer.

2. should you fail to follow the first advice: value drawing more than painting. don't waste so much time trying to paint digitally and making beautiful marks, focus on drawing drawing drawing. and make a clear distinction between illustration and concept art. very different jobs and clients want to know you are aware of that.

draw from life, frequently

don't restrict your work to your concept. break the rules of a class project if it means a stronger painting. got a concept for a series? don't stick too it so firmly that the works become theme-y, let each work stand on its own rather than warp to match other paintings.

I would like to give no advice and just beat the shit out myself while https://youtu.be/gJscrxxl_Bg plays as loud as humanly possible. I wonder what the result would've been.

>> No.2127902

Would've handed myself a copy of "Drawing on the Right Side of the Brain" and forbade myself from relying on MUH STYLE to excuse the fact I could only draw shitty anime.

1. Art is not easy and thinking that quick fixes are possible set you up for failure

2. It gets better once you've started

>> No.2128116

1. Kill yourself
2. It's not worth it.

1. You are a wonderful autodidact. You always will be, but go back to school anyway. There are things they can teach you about life and doing business that you will have great trouble teaching yourself. It's ok to need help.

2. Believe in yourself. You think that nobody else does because they don't tell you. They think you're exceptional and that you already know that. You are wonderful, and as you pull yourself up you will pull up many people along with you that you won't know about for a long, long time. Your path will be very fulfilling, so try to find more joy in it.

Try to become friends with some unknown chick on Deviantart who goes by "sakimichan" and convince her to start a studio together.

Don't bother with concept art shit, hone your skills to be able to draw decently rendered, appealing looking animu fanart

Draw from life more.

Learn basic drawing early on.

Stop drawing from >muh feelings.

I would decline the oppurtunity, since I am fine with where I am and happy with my progress, the chance that something goes wrong and alters my current life is too high for me.
If instead I had the chance to teleport my consciousness to when I was a novice and overwrite my old self I would do it.

He might be full of shit, but there are many people who seriously are better at self teaching than being instructed.

>> No.2128596

They're basically the same thing, but since it's for baby-me;

1. You're not as bad nor as good as you think you are. Even the shittiest drawings are worth more then no drawings.

2. It's okay to drop projects, don't beat yourself up over failure. The goal is to do stuff, it doesn't have to be good or perfect. When you do stuff, you've succeeded. Focus on that, and you'll do more stuff.

I'd say to invest money into business instead of throwing it away at art college.

I dropped out of school and taught myself. I learned how to do things by trying many things. At first I would say I learned by learning what not to do through experience (failing), but eventually began to appreciate that there are many shades of grey in application of techniques. Intimate familiarity with things that are less effective gave rise to the idea that "wrong" things are quite useful in some circumstances. I accidentally became a very sought after teacher, learning how to teach others based on the long 20 year (and counting) experience in the field. I look back at my younger self and realize now I could have learned in half the time had I had a teacher like the one I unintentionally became. I do not know if that would be paradoxical, but I want to believe I could help younger people get where they're going faster in a university setting. Took a long time to see that one of my strengths is also a weakness, that humility in accepting help would also allow me to help others better.

Don't. By the time you're good, you'll have burned out and have little interest in what made you start drawing in the first place.

>> No.2128763

1) Be patient. Art takes time. It takes years to learn and master the skills involved. And it can take hours or day to do single pieces. Even on quick sketches, patience is good. Rushing things is harmful in many ways, and patience actually increases speed (as contradictory as that sounds).
2) Do not compare yourself to others, at least not in a negative way. Do not say, "so and so is so much better than me" or "so and so did X at my age".

1 - you had what you needed after you entered that 15 page comic into that contest, just make your own comic and run with it because that will become way more popular and lucrative than trying to work in mainstream comics, and actually becomes the new hiring process for mainstream companies anyway.
2 - Don't stress so much.

2. stop being so hard on yourself

Do study psychology and become a PR guy at that multinational.
You won't need to suffer for money and will actually be productive instead of spending 8 hours a day in pain without producing shit.

Past:
1. learn how to be patient while learning new things.
2. learn the feel like vippu said and practice it until the level of detail is reached.
Present:
1. learn to control your concepts or projects
2. develop a level of detail instead of hard to read gestures.
3. stop relying on cartoon anatomy all the time, read the books.
4. get help from burning out.
5. your brother's advice is worth a lot, including plans.
6. god forbid you from killing yourself because there is more to live in life than ending it.
7. become like the next Ben Garrison.
