Most art directors can't draw worth dick, you know? Look it up, I'm serious. Some guy on /ic/ mentioned becoming an art director despite having no real knowledge or experience creating art himself.

While you don't have to know how to paint or draw, you do have to be an artist to become an art director-a greasy, shit-talking scam artist.

tl;dr it wouldn't hurt to try in a few years.

28, I work in a small video game store. It's not Gamestop so I have generous amounts of downtime, though not nearly as much as I'd like considering I work 11 hours. I only started drawing regularly a few years ago so I have a lot of catching up to do.

My goal is animation, I don't necessarily want an 'art job', but I'd love to get good enough to deserve one if you know what I mean. I want to create my own animated short films. If money or a job comes or if it doesn't, so be it. I just want to put myself out there, fam.

I don't necessarily need to have my own show or anything, but it'd be nice if my ideas could become more than just small personal projects.

Animation means a lot to me...I don't have anything else, I can work as an architect, or a construction manager, I have the skill sets and minor, but I'd probably kill myself if I can't animate. Animation is all I have to be proud of myself with. My love life is in shambles, my friendships are thinning out. All I have is me and my ideas and dreams.

Do you mean actually clinically depressed? Because in that case it would be 1) bad for business because people with depression/anxiety can't always pull themselves through it long enough to meet deadlines and 2) bad for the individual because whoever ran the show would probably just exploit them for cheap labor.

But if you just mean the average introverted kissless virgin on 4chan, then maybe something good could come of it. Even /a/ was able to hold it together long enough to make KS.

Theres a thing called the hurdle of taste.
Your taste is telling you that you suck, because you have higher standarts than your own skills.
Thats what everyone has to face and overcome.

Fact is your writing abilities are 50% shit you simply read and 50% experience actually writing.
Before you actually start doing something, shit wont change. Once you actually start accumulating experience "where to start" wont be a question anymore.

TL;DR: You gotta force yourself to overcome the hurdle from no-skill to beginner, and you turn into a beginner when you actually begin.

Way to get offended over a suggestion. What, did I hurt your feelings by using the phrase less experienced? My point was that when animating you want to move the hips as often as you move the shoulders around, otherwise there's a feeling that they're either stuck to the ground or paralyzed from the waist down. You shouldn't take comments so personally, especially when you have no idea how much experience the person on the other end has.

Thoughtless crit my ass, if you can't take feedback and think it through then you really will stay a hobbyist forever.

I just want to be satisfied with my drawing skill and get to the point where I'm not disappointed with everything I make or envious of other artists. After that I would try to attempt making a visual novel.

Are you me? I didn't drop out of art school, but art school made me depressed about my art compared to my classmates that graduated. Many of them moved on to be professional comic book artists (and now the comics they worked on are being adapted for SyFy tv shows)

Feel depressed and feel I'll never reach their level of success. We still keep in touch on facebook, but i feel they don't respect me as an artist since I'm not as good as them nor have I had anything published.

It's all made me depressed and unmotivated to improve.

Portrait drawing, still life painting, some kind of minimalistic composition exam, motivation exam, where you also explain a painting idea based on a theme.
Im fine with where I went, I believe one of my classmates went to EKA before and she said that it wasnt as much learning, as it was discussing art, she said she had to start learning independantly, since EKA basically sucked.

Sucks that they don't have drawing/concept art, though animation isn't that far from it.

I only mistook her because I know Evestus has posted here before and she also went to TKK, painting course. And hey, there's at least a 50% chance we have common friends/acquaintances, last year I was in the same school with two anons who visited /balt/ threads on /int/.

Same here. I've only recently become interested in animation, but the main reason I'm choosing that is because it apparently helps with stylizing/simplifying/composition, so it basically also helps with illustration and concepts. I doubt I'll choose painting, they only do traditional not digital as far as I know.

99% of you guys suck so bad its hilarious that you think you can succeed in this cutthroat field. The rest of you think art is all about skill when you're too socially retarded to know that a huge portion is also building connections and actually marketing your work. Go get a shitty day job and keep this a hobby because at least you'll be able to move out of your parents' basement by the time you're 30.

Or prove me wrong and actually spend at least 8 hours a day practicing. If you aren't doing that, you better hope you have talent (YES, TALENT DOES EXIST, life is not fair, and as unbelievable as it sounds to your feeble egos, there are actually people who are special snowflakes who can create work 1000% better than you with 1000% less effort).
