Hey, /ic/. So a friend of mine just graduated from college with his degree in game development and I'm the environmental designer for the game he wants to make. I wanted some input on the tools to use for the project and how I should approach the matter. The pic is an example of how I've been working on the environment thus far, using paint.NET. I choose an arbitrary color to mark the different faces. The front face is the base filler color, I increase the Value of that color by 10 for the side face, and another 10 for the top face. Now, these value shenanigans are maintained whenever I cover the arbitrary filler colors with whatever building material I'm gonna use for that building in particular. So, the receding brickwork and slat lines in the pic are 10 points higher in Value than the horizontal. Plus, when applying the horizontal wall details, I cover the dividing line between the front face and the side face to make it look more smooth. The pic pretty much shows everything I do, so what do you think? For reference, the horizontal line is 100 pixels from outline to outline, the receding line is 50 pixels from outline to outline, the vertical line is 60 pixels from outline to outline, and the receding axis is at a 45 degree angle.

Pixel art is kind of over done. I love pixel art, and I love indie games, and even I am tired of it.

At this point, unless Paul Robertson's name is on the game, I just don't even look at "indie pixel art" games. Too many people think that pixel art is 100% about seeing the pixels and 0% about how well each one is used. "Minimalist pixel art" sounds about as appetizing as "occult teen romance."

What is the game actually going to be? And in what is he making it?

There are really quite different ways of approaching how to put models/backgrounds etc into a game. Could be like whole big pictures, to using tilesets scrolling backgrounds. Depends really what he is making.
Other than that google a bunch of pixel art tutorials. And practice... a lot. Pixel art is not easy.

Your friend will fail because he is working with people without expertise like you.
