There's a common misconception that simple=bad, and this really applies to almost everything in life, while less is not always more, you can often achieve more with less.
Some of the greatest things are done with very simple techniques, a master chef doesn't cook amazing food because he throws in a wide variety of spices, he's a great cook because he knows exactly how and where to put them, and for how long to cook things.

Well I mean I'm not saying either is inherently better, but /ic/ in particular has this mindset that anatomy has to be perfect and everything has to be realism in order for it to be good. But honestly that takes a back seat to composition and subject matter. Yes having great forms is nice, but when people look at a picture a large majority of what dictates whether they like it or not isn't how great the people look, its the composition and that's the same no matter what style you're drawing and no matter what your subject matter is.
Of course what is appealing to each person might be subjective, but what is "good" is pretty much universal. I can look at a picture of a loli being tentacle raped and thing 'oh well the subject is shit but this man really knows how to piece together a wonderful picture' just the as if I looked at pictures of gay men rolling all over each other. You can still tell its 'good' even if you don't like it yourself.

I can partially relate to this. While I was never a stereotypical weeb, I did enjoy anime back in the day, primarily the stuff from the late 80s until 2000 or so. After that, it just turned into fetishistic shit and shounen.
The funny thing is that the online fandom of the late 90s, made a pretty clear distinction between anime. Shit like DBZ, Sailormoon and Pokemon were consider children's anime which almost no one watched. It was like a distinct fandom that the average anime fan stayed away from. This changed in 1999, when Toonami started showing anime, and it hit the mainstream fulltime.
So while I don't watch anime at all anymore, and only read a handful of manga, I still draw in the style. I like the potential of the style and where it was heading 20 years ago, but somewhere along the line it just turned to shit.

Well reason I don't say comics is that due to some certain specific movements comics are pretty much dead while anime and manga are still pretty big over there. sci-fi fans are still fairly prominent however and have a similar stigma (although somewhat better since a lot of people think sci-fi=smart nerd).
I'd say comics have more of a "oh yeah that used to be a big thing" rather than a "oh yeah that's the things those fat nerds watch a lot"
