Bridgman? Do you mean Hogarth? Anyways, remember that it is just a simplification of a real head. It would be better do a study from a photo of a person, and then if you have trouble with understanding the forms you can refer to the one from Hogarth/Bridgman/whoever.

I like the shot and the idea, but it's just far too soft. The overuse of the soft brush is ruining a potentially great drawing. I really think you could spend some time adding more detail to many elements of the drawing, particularly the landmass towards the bottom right. I also think you should avoid the soft brush for the most part and draw your gradients. That will also help make it feel stronger and more grounded, since the soft brush just makes it so floaty.

Hope that helps, and glad it was a lot of fun!

I would also suggest that you consider a wider range of values. It's pretty constrained to a few midtones (as seen in this graph), and some darker values may help in separating some of the forms.

Thanks I'll look up how to make a unified color scheme.

The shading ranges from the darks of the main color used but there is black for the darkest of areas. My idea was to make the front of the guy dark while his backside shines. I think I did a poor job shading the mask to get that across.

I see the issue of the composition now. Yeah, to me it's kind of like a scene but my own version of it.

I don't think so either, but divorcing my ego from my painting, I could see how the illustration might be better if I included an image inside the speech bubble instead of the text. Like maybe one of the smaller guns, so maybe the girl's expression reads as "Really? You thought that was going to work?"

That image is done, though, so I'd rather accept the feedback and move on to my next drawing.

Looks really neat but I would definitely darken the background to add some contrast. The halo is not centered on the head and its facing the viewer directly so its completely flat. It may be hard to pull off but try to make it parallel to the figure, it would look 10x better. Also the foreshortening on the right arm isn't working right now. Overall cool though.

It's funny, this is one of the few images I've ever seen that looks worse in thumbnail form.

The only part that's really working is the face/eye in the second image. When you start getting into the smooth objects, the gradations look really artificial/filtery Consider simplifying these areas into fewer tones, or blend them together more.

I guess the monochromatic colour scheme is intentional, but I think you could broaden it a bit,, or add a little bit of complementary.

And yeah, that first image is really messy.

You want critique? Show us the whole picture. What you have posted looks like an early sketch... not something worth actually dissecting. But since you asked

>wondering how it turned out
see above
>managed to make the metal look like metal
what are you referring too? it looks like metal because it's "robot" shapes, if you are asking about the rendering, it does not look like the material is metal. before continuing let's move on to
>where /how the line quality is shit
are you cross hatching? doesn't seem like it, it seems like you heard about cross hatching and then just did some squiggly stuff thinking that would be ok. it doesn't look great, again, early sketch quality at best
>incorrect shading/reflections
you drew some rectangles to simulate highlights, that's cool... but the rest of the "shading" doesn't do anything to help hold that up and pop.

tl;dr
this slightly better than a rough sketch, if you want feedback on rendering shading etc show us something a little farther along.

as far as my "style" goes I do everything by imagination and almost never draw with a reference. that's why everything I do is never "perfect" or something like that, it's very approximative and it's fine by me, I like it like that. Doesn't mean I never look at references, I look at them sometimes but never in the context of drawing them. It helps me really get it into my head instead of just copying it multiple times until it gets in.

here's an example, the faces I did just now. I never drew faces/expressions from references, but I know approximately what an expression looks like because every time I see it in a movie, or when I look in a mirror I pick it up and remember them. Everybody can do that, people just don't think about doing it.

You'd be impressed by what you can learn from watching a movie and pausing to look at a character's expression, light bouncing here and there etc. so start from that, start really looking at stuff and analyse it, even if quickly, it stays.

Not the anon you were talking to but I think a cropped body part can work depending on how to handle it. (see pic, it's from akira)

I think you might like akira and cryberpunk mangas like battle angel alita, appleseed, etc

They go for gritty not super slick which is the best kind of cyberpunk imo.

In your pic I think you can organize the lights and darks better and stop the scribbling. Slow down. You may be confusing scribbling with lively or spontaneous but what's important is that you be in control the whole time. It looks like you lost control of what you were doing all over your sketch and you just didn't have a solid idea of what you were doing. That's what makes it look somewhat half-assed. I like the esthetic but I think it could be WAY more refined

Three things -

Consider using color to help separate the blocks from the actual body. Don't be afraid to use a little saturation either.

Values are really uniform across the board. Consider reserving your highest values for really making things pop, and for adding clarity. Think about the blocks being within their own range of values, and the body being within it's own. Does that make sense?

Lastly, the edges are pretty bad. This is especially true for the silhouette, which looks poorly cut out. Try integrating the figure into your background, instead of just plopping it on a minimal-effort gradient.

Just my thoughts! Hope they help

So I went to an art store earlier this morning to get a painting stretched and framed, and spontaneously bought a sketchpad and some HB pencils, two different erasers, a sharpener.

Drew these 5 minutes ago.. just Googled random images and kind of copied them and added some stuff myself. Hmm whatever I drew probably doesn't belong in this thread that's full of great work, but yeah. I haven't drawn anything since high school introductory art class like 10 years ago but I do want to get better. It's a pretty relaxing, new hobby.

Perhaps try adding a bit more contrast? Try squinting your eyes and see if you can make out the forms easily.

Also, there's nothing wrong with using lines. You can use a subtle line of relief to help separate forms that are become hard to read.

It's like when the old live action super hero shows and movies would drain all of the life out of the characters so that they would fit in a realistic settings. Subdued and lifeless.

His Frankenstein's monster looks more like Lou Ferrigno's Hulk than Mark Ruffalos.

It's like he can draw realistically but can't put any appeal in his drawings. They're all overly concerned with wrinkles and anatomy. The expressions drawing just sealed it for me. There are no less than 30 lines in each face to indicate creases and folds, yet all of the expressions are really flat. And it doesn't help that the line width is as samey as it could be while not being one brush.

Sorry to the artist, but I look at your drawings and makes my head hurt a little. I feel like if that is what my art looked like, I'd want to dry heave. I'd probably quit drawing. It's everything I don't want to be. Again, I'm sorry. I don't think I've ever disliked someones work so much who could actually draw. I think I am your first hater.

These things are not the same at all. You can be good enough to draw from life, but lack dynamic or interesting ways of interpreting those shapes from imagination.

>30 lines in each face

>looks flat

Line variation. Having none will flatten your drawings and can make things busy or hard to navigate. And by flat I mean stale, not literally a flat surface. I guess if you ignore the rest of my comment, I can see how you would confuse those two.

Needs no colors, just works as is. In fact if you add colors they will probably mess it up because your boundaries are not always well defined (I'm not saying this is bad, just explaining why colors will not be a good idea)

hey anon, do you have a tree brush of some kind, maybe in SAI or Paintstorm? Your foliage should be looking a bit more leafy.

The rock looks SUPER flat, like a pine cone without any pods. That tree in the back is kind of pathetic, maybe a black silhouette would look better back there instead of any color.

The front tree is coming along but needs more twists and curves in the back, the way it's arching is more like a palm tree.
