>get drawing on the right side of the brain
>every exercise is literally "you have to watch the lines and try to get the shading right then draw the rest of the fucking owl"

What the actual fuck. Are there other good books for begginers like me?

This book sucks; get Keys to Drawing instead.

>> No.2117302

Get Vilppu's Drawing Manual. It helps you extremely well for a beginner. I followed along and it's definitely helped me way more than Loomis' Fun With a Pencil.

>> No.2117313

It's the best book for beginners in my opinion, but you really only need to do the first couple of exercises before it gets totally gay. Once you draw something upside down you've basically gotten everything you need out of it.

VDM is GREAT especially for aspiring animators. Feel it nigga.

>> No.2117322

>>2117283
That is the best book, it's designed to teach complete beginners though so you won't get to more advanced stuff until halfway through the book.
It sounds like you really want to learn construction though, which is slightly more advanced.

>>2117322
All you really need from the book is the understanding of spatial relationships which you get from reading her thoughts and following the first couple exercises; to be honest I think after that point the book doesn't do anything that isn't done far better elsewhere and with less ponderous tools and accessories.

Dump Edwards and take on Keys to Drawing and the Bargue Drawing Course to learn more about observational drawing.

Fun with pencil is for extreme begginers tho.

This. Forget drawing on the right side. Keys to drawing is where the money is at + the exercises are pretty similar but Dodson doesn't try to make them look like something they're not.

Not OP, but also a shit-tier beginner. I'm renting a copy of this, but I've only looked through some of the beginning stuff so far. Anyone else have experience with it?

>> No.2117651

let's turn this into a what books don't suck thread. only books you've personally used.

>> No.2117696

I'm working with this right now. I am absolutely a spastic beginner. As a progression, how does this sound:

DRSB
Keys to Drawing
Perspective Made Easy
Scott Robertson How To Draw Vehicles

Goal is really focused on drawing cars for shits and giggles but I'd like to be able to achieve a decent level of general competence.

>> No.2117708

>>2117696
The thing is as I've said elsewhere in the thread ( >>2117313 ; >>2117334 ) You don't really need to treat DRSB as a complete book. The first few chapters are absolutely essential for "breaking the ice" when it comes to observational drawing, but the INSTANT she starts talking about "viewfinders" and other accessory bullshit it's time to drop that Betty Edwards ho like a bad habit.

This book taught me how to sculpt with graphite, and I thought that was really cool at the time but not that useful after awhile. It's great for beginners though.

The Vilppu drawing manual is up in my top 3, one of those books you can work through multiple times and still learn new things.

>> No.2117729

>>2117708

But does my subsequent reading look suitable?

>> No.2117739

I'd say so if that's your goal.

Cheers. I know it isn't ultra important, but I'd still like to know if I'm making a terrible mistake!

Ah, this is the book that produces these amateurs who tell you not to use lines, isn't it?

Pure contour drawing is a crock of shit. The exercise in the book anyway.

Oh yeah I forgot about that one. LOL

Just read through the book as you want, it isn't that important.

Grab some books about what you want to draw and the fundamentals.

Also, "traditional" "beginner" books for artists are the A. L. Guptills books for drawing in ink and pencil, J.D. Hardings landscape drawing books, Arthur Welsey Dows books on composition and some other books mostly available from Dover. If you just want your craftsman skills to improve, grab "Harding's Lessons on Drawing" which will teach you the basics.

But that is only one anon speaking.
