Yeah I'm super confused about comics sometimes. Because I'll see stuff that makes me go "wtf? This...really isn't that good..." yet if you go do a portfolio review with anyone they have like crazy high standards. And it's not that I'm saying I'm better but if the gate is supposedly so high, how do you get really messed up stuff mixed in with guys like Joe Mad and Albuquerque? Just bizarre.

Your portfolio has to be awesome, but once you're in you can bullshit as much as you want because all that matters to the company is how much it sells. lol I looked up that Borderlands comic, and sure enough, they had some of the worst drawings up as previews.

This is why I can't read comics anymore. I'm too much of an art snob. Comics are supposed to be as much about the art as the characters and story. They don't give a shit, though. They just shovel it out, and squeeze as much as they can out of their artists.

Hal Foster is the best of all time, hands down.

He started art school in 1919 at the age of 27 and started drawing the very first adventure comic strip, Tarzan, in 1928. In 1937 he created Prince Valiant, a medieval fantasy adventure story set in the age of King Arthur. Every week he worked 50-60 hours drawing on massive 2x3 feet pages, creating one strip a week from 1937 to 1970. Every line was meticulously drawn, there was no fakery. Every detail was perfect. From 1970 onwards he gradually switched to just pencilling until finally retiring from the board in 1975 at the age of 83.

Soon after retiring a fuck up during an operation ruined his memory and he died in 1982, three weeks shy of his 90th birthday, with no memory of Prince Valiant.

Gentlemen, that is a fucking artist. And anyone who thinks it's too late to make it is a massive fag.

I like Bilal, but are you seriously implying that's the ultimate way to do so ? That's a bit insulting. Painting is just another way to draw.

From experience, I can say manga are by far the most enjoyable and dynamic books we can read. There is just something about the paneling that make it way more adapted as a book. Lots of comics are a fucking pain to read, even if they're well drawn, and that's exactly because there is way too much details, while manga artists draws what we should FOCUS on (not saying they're all doing it well and that all the comics artists are like that though).

I won't say Mad! is the best, you really need to be in the right mood to apreciate him, but when you are, his shit is epic in the actual dictionary definition of the word. He makes everything so proportionally mythic, like the superhero genre ought to be.

On one hand you're listing some really terrible artists (I mean, McFarlane ? Liefeld ? X-TREME and terrible anatomy. I get that some people went "not muh Wolverine" when they first saw his stuff and he's certainly not made for capes, but his process and way to approach painting work really well for other genres.

I have his book Worlds of Sam Kieth and it's fascinating. I really recommend it.

Rob Liefeld is pretty shit if you're into realism but he's a quirky like of mine because he pioneered some good gimmicks to make bad proportions etc. look good... his X force work was horrendous, but he came up with Dead Poole and I liked his young blood comic. I can understand why people hate some of his work though. It got old quick.

Todd on the other hand is legendary man. He reuses a lot of the same poses and art but he has some amazing art out there.

Goran Parlov is my current favourite. His work strikes a cartoony realism I love in sequential art. He's a master with the brush, and his attention to detail and sense of energy is unparallaled
