So what books would you recommend to get into sculpting?

You can start by getting some non-drying plasticine and practicing on it. First by molding and then by pure reduction. It's clay, so you can work quite fast and skill up quickly. So far as I know practically all of the sculptors would have practiced the figure they are to carve first with clay or wax, and before that with drawing.
