"To any man who has slaved to acquire skill in his art, it is most irritating to have his ability referred to as a gift. Perhaps there is one genius in a hundred years or more who can achieve perfection by divine inspiration. I have never met such a man, and I do not know any successful artist who did not get there by the sweat of his brow."

Previous Thread: >>2080784

A general message to aspiring artists: "Lack of knowledge can be greater torture than the effort of acquiring it. When all is said and done, nature is your best instructor."

Submit your drawings, receive feedback or critique others! Share your knowledge and remember to thank those who've critiqued or red-lined your drawings. Most importantly, have fun.

This thread is meant for artists who might want to try to make stylized work in-between their studies. It is strongly recommended that you use this thread in conjunction with learning the elements and fundamentals of art. You can also discuss the visual elements of various professional artists as well if you keep it relatively articulate and civil.

Lot's of practice and drawing, I'm guessing.

I find that a lot of people on /ic/ are just afraid of making mistakes so they just revert to doing studies or copying pictures or whatever. Not saying that isn't helpful, because it is and you will eventually git gud, but if you want to git gud faster you need to draw and fuck around with shit, and use study as a way of figuring out the parts you fucked up. You can't skip the making mistakes part and expect it to help all that much.

Yeah it's completely different when working with color. It's been a lot of fun really, definitely more time consuming because there's so many things to consider concurrently. The amount of time you put into it also shows through the work. That /cgl/ picture I did in 2 hours on my tumblr is such ass cause over 0 planning and no rough. The better stuff, meanwhile, has taken on average 7-8 hours. I'm excited to see what kind of stuff I can make once I reach 20+ hours-- though I think I'm not quite at the skill level to start those kind of projects yet.

In any case, I am working on fundamentals so I think it's a moot point to argue further about it (especially when I'm not even the one doing the arguing). Yall niggas gettin riled up over nothing.

Alright.

I changed a few things based on your pointers, like the mouth, the jaw, the ear and the hairline, but also left some other things in due to aesthetic preference and "muh style"

I don't wanna make the face too narrow, since I tend to like giving females more square and "flatter" (Asian-looking) faces.

As for the neck, it just looks really weird for me if I move it to the angle you suggest, so I changed it back. You're right in how it connects, but in order to get it totally right I'd need to redraw a fair portion of the head. I feel that I can leave a few things anatomically incorrect so long as it's aestheically pleasing. I've flipped the canvas over a few times, and she looks great (to me) on both views, and that's what matters.

Thanks for all the help though, she looks much better now.

well damn, acidentally redlined the wrong image. but still, most of these should still apply.
i'm no expert but i hope this helps:

-be more aware of the direction she is facing. if you think of the face as a "round" plane, your features will tend to slide off the sides.
-gesture is awful, it's always ugly to have the neck go back and the ribcage go forward.
-the neck is too short in all of these considering that head size. learn the proportions, and learn where the clavicles and shoulders are supposed to be. give the neck some space.

third point is probably the most important one in this case. proporstions are important. if you don't do it right you'll get wonky results, like the head looking too big.

no i can imagine what he was going for, but i'm talking about the gesture. it doesn't work like that. it's like sticking out your head and chest at the same time. it looks goofy.

gotta have a clear gesture. if it's chest forward then you have to keep the neck straight. if the head/chin is ahead then you gotta lean back with the rest of the body. the line of action needs to be clear.
not that i showed it in my redline (i mainly wanted to make a point on proportions), but it's also an issue.

Crits-
Her neck looks flat, like a piece of paper instead of a cylindrical shape.

I think the neck of her sweater looks a bit weird. It stretches too much out to the front.

I think you can tighten up your strokes. Also, you can sharpen up or blur selective areas to create focus and atmosphere.

The hair is very pretty. But the bangs area looks a bit bunched up and stiff like there is gel on it.

Overall I think it is very cute and eye catching. But I think it needs something extra to give it charisma. Like some unique effect on the eyes or her expression.

Asians, specially women don't need to show too much change of planes, so try to no add too many lines or render that much, fwiw I stayed in line only most of the time, the I added color via overlay, then auto-contrast, this 2nd step helped me to not do too much opaque painting.

This is my 1st time using chromatic aberration, I used it because /ic/ kept talking about it heh, Btw using the blur tool on the other side of the sweater was surprisingly nice

I'm sorry it looks a bit generic but when I try to do something special I fuck it up most of the time, I guess I should aim for correct for a while.

you could improve lineart
and you could improve lighting, horns emit light, so make it seem they do so, color the air dust around it, color a bit the robes of that green light, you also might add ligh refractions inside the hood, on the blocks.. for example the grass on the stairs shouls not be all the same at shadow, as the one closest to the lighted one should get some brightness from it

If you want clean lines go over your work with the pen tool

Advice?
I'm mediocre. Thing is, I stopped drawing for about two years.
Now that I'm trying to draw again, I realize I don't really have a style. I just see it as "generic semi-realistic". Mixture of western and eastern influence. I don't outright dislike the style, but I'm not in love with it either.
Is this something worth worrying over that I should fix or should I let it continue to "evolve naturally?
