It's not that surprising to be honest. A very common exercise in ateliers or art schools is to make new students draw something that everyone has seen hundreds of times, like a dog or a fire hydrant etc from memory. The results tend to be pretty bad, even amongst artists who are good at drawing from observation. The purpose of that exercise is to show the students just how little they actually observe in their day to day life.

if you have a good idea of the horse's anatomy, you can draw it in any pose and experiment with poses quickly.

if you're doing concept art or something where you need to work quickly, it could help quite a bit to just have the horse in your head. besides, horses are quite a common subject, it's almost as useful as having a good memory for human anatomy.

if time permits, the guy who can already draw the horse from memory will have an even easier time working from reference, and changing the reference to suit his needs.

so there's that

It's just a fun exercise....If you wanna think about from a professional "illustrator" stand point, then chances are that any good company would probably test your abilities first before hiring you. So drawing from your head or drawing decent thumbnails on the spot are decent skills to have as an illustrator or graphic designer. I wished you had just tried to do the challenge.

If you want to draw from memory you have to first draw from a reference. Saying you're learning something without first referencing it is just stupid. At best, this is a good exercise for advanced/experienced illustrators. But this is /ic/, and even then, doing a horse in a thumbnail design and doing an actual illustration of a horse are two completely different things. You will likely use a reference 100% of the times for the latter.

You're still using a reference. Like I said, at best, this exercise is for more advanced illustrators looking to test their memory. But this is /ic/. If you know you don't know how to properly draw a horse, then there's absolutely no reason not to use a reference. (so likely everyone here).

>>2087019
Which is why I said the bit about more advanced illustrators. I should have elaborated a bit more I suppose. But creating an exercise like this creates a misconception for a lot of people just learning to draw. I can't count how many times I've seen people ask if using a reference is cheating, and this sort of thing tends to perpetuate that myth.

however, looking at reference now, the grasping action often puts the talons more to the outside and more evenly spaced than how i've drawn them.

This is a really fucking terrible way to learn. When you want to draw something you don't know how to draw, its not cheating to look at references. Looking at references is how you learn to draw it.

I mean, I get it if this thread is just a fun thing, but OP called it an "exercise".
