Where there's a specific goal to draw like "dude on a cool motorcycle" and you have maybe a day to draw it then everyone posts results within 24 hours and anons vote on their favorites for the next 24 hours to declare a victor. I feel like that could be fun. Do you think it'd breed too much hostility?

Someone tried that with either a Character of the Week or a Creature of the Week prompt ripped straight from ca.org. AFAIK nobody really tried it out, plus there's no easy way to handle voting.

The prompts that seem to generate participation are some study threads, and things involving rolling for an assignment like those tower girl threads. Having a "victor" isn't necessary or easy to do around here.

IDK, I think activities are fun and we still might be able to have a successful thread in the future minus the voting. From what I've seen the sillier activities tend to bring out participation. Threads like 'draw this character in your own style' sometimes get posts.

I'm not knowledgeable at all in art but I'm a fan of De Chirico's surreal works.

I recently discovered Hopper and his painting have kind of the same feeling to them.

Is there a similarity in their painting techniques? I know there is a kind of "loneliness" theme in their work but it also feel visually similar. Is it the oil painting?

Yes. I had to restart to fix the drivers and now I can't replicate my problem. Huh. However, I noticed that when I was having this problem the Opacity (but not the Flow) Jitter kept resetting to 0% if I set it to another number.

If the problem occurs frequently, then you'd want a clean install of the wacom drivers. This means deleting tablet preferences using the utility in the wacom install directory, then deleting every mention of tablet and wacom in the device manager, restarting, then installing the new driver.

If the problem is rare, there's a faster solution than a restart. You can close photoshop, run Services.msc (search for it from the start menu), and restart the wacom isd service (it could have a different name, or just a tablet related service).

Is turd polishing ever useful? When I set out to do a sketch, if it starts to fall apart beyond what I can fix, is it worth it to keep working at it and try to continue to learn from my mistakes within that single piece? Or would it be better to set it aside and try again taking what I have learned? I'm talking about short term sketches (pic related) taking under 30minutes.

>> No.2085844

>>2085793
Generally you want to fix mistakes as you spot them. If there mistakes aren't fixable, either start over or keep those mistakes in mind for the next piece.

>I'm talking about short term sketches (pic related) taking under 30minutes.
That's not turd polishing. It's impossible to polish anything in 30 minutes. In fact, it probably isn't possible to get to the point where you start polishing within the span of 30 minutes.

Turd polishing usually refers to when you spend time rendering, texturing, tweaking, polishing, etc. a painting or drawing that already has basal flaws.

Alright, so
Is it more beneficial to learn how to paint by beginning with Greyscale painting, then glazing over with colors?
Or just jump straight into colors and just slowly figuring the whole idea of color and light out?

I know for a fact that if the values are off, then it doesn't matter what the colors are, it'll look wrong. But I know that with Greyscale -> Color Glazing, paintings can tend to look muddy or dull.

Any thoughts?

I've honestly only just started to get the hang of colour from doing value paintings, for me having bad values was the main problem. greyscale - colour can look muddy if you don't approach it the right way, I use photoshop and initially my attempts looked muddy/ oversaturated and shitty. You will have to do a fair amount of actual painting over the top of your greyscale painting, you cant just use colour layers and expect it to look good. If you're using photoshop have a look at zedig's gumroad video that might be useful to you.

>> No.2085992

>>2085914
Here's what I'd do:

1. Learn how to paint values.

2. Learn how to paint in monochrome. This doesn't mean the same hue and saturation. With traditional paints, you'd be making a palette by using black, white, a warm red and a cool red for example. You can do effectively the same thing in digital. You'll probably benefit from premixing your palette even when working digitally.

3. Learn to paint with limited palettes. Similar to the last step, but now you're slowly introducing new colors. Gurney has a lot of posts on gamut mapping that are relevant.
http://pastebin.com/rQ2EVg4J

4. Learn to paint without your palette being limited.

For each of the color stages, you want to jump straight into color instead of grayscale to color. You can learn grayscale to color techniques to speed up your workflow down the line, but they usually necessitate repainting most of the image after the color glazes.

For all of these exercises, you'll gain the most by painting from life (still lifes). It also wouldn't hurt to learn how color and light work both in the physical sense and in terms of color theory, designing your values, etc.

SAI related questions :

What's the difference between a regular and lineart layer?

How do I change the color of everything that's in the layer to a set color? ( not hue & saturation filter, I mean like changing black lines to blue ones, literally a "color" option for everything that's in the layer )

And how to use the lasso/area select to move/rotate/scale on multiple layers? I've looked into it before and the idea was to throw everything in one folder, but often when trying to do that on the folder results in SAI telling me there's nothing in the selection area.

One button for drag zoom in/out exists in SAI?

Only way as far as I know is to put area/character layers in their own folder in advance, or copy paste the area from each layer then put them all in a folder, or merge all layers, copy, then undo to unmerge them and do with the copy/pasted selection.

I've only heard good things about it. It's good if you want a non-portable drawing on screen option that isn't as pricey as the larger cintiqs.

I wouldn't buy one if you have very limited digital painting/drawing experience. If you already have a normal tablet and are used to it, you might see some improvement in your ability to draw digitally, but no improvement on painting ability from my experience with a wacom enabled tabletpc. Overall it makes painting and drawing digitally a funner experience IMO, but it's not as accurate as traditional tools due to parallax and lessened accuracy towards the edges of the screen.

If you can afford it and plan on using it a lot, then go for it. If it would put a dent in your wallet or if you don't see yourself using it nearly daily, then I wouldn't bother IMO.

You did an extremely impressive amount of progress already, but this isn't a race. You have the rest of your life to improve at your craft. I suggest you draw as much as you want to, and every little bit counts.

For now I recommend you just doodle the things you really enjoy; don't give a shit about how it looks. I also suggest you set little goals for you each day. 10 minutes or so of a figure study or perspective practice. Little things.

>Im kinda scared that there is no hope for me if the 'drawing habit' has not caught on yet.

Hey, you feel bad. That suggests to me that you still care, and that's what matters most. The thing about habits is, they take time to set in. When did you start getting serious about drawing? You can't really start out working in 12+ hours a day if your mind isn't adjusted to that. Just work as much as you can each day, gradually increasing the time you draw.

PS: Take up cycling again. It's good for you man, exercise helps.

Yes. You might have trouble with foreshortening but just get yourself some knowledge of a basic skeleton (look up some loomis) and general proportions, as well as places where s-curves and balances/counterbalances in the forms of the body appear. Do gesture drawings as a warm up first, try to get the entire pose down (place the head to the feet, as well as arms and hands) before going into any kind of detail. Big to small ideas with that. Go from sets of 30 sec - 1 min - 3 - 5 or whatever, always keeping the same process.

Break them down into shapes if you need to, you don't need to construct everything in a drawing. Construction is good for studying, good for foreshortening, and good when you don't know what the fuck is going on in a pose and need to work it out on paper. But you don't always need it for every part of your drawing. A lot of it can be done with just simple shapes (that's where you start from anyways)

4 days really isn't anything to get stressed over.
You can be at any stage in your art progression and just need to step back for a bit. That doesn't make you any less of an 'artist'.

In fact, getting immersed in non-art things can help you become more rounded and gain a richer perspective. I'd say it's crucial. People who focus on art to the exclusion of all other things, such as music, dance, conversation, in your case athletic pursuit, avoiding the very things that can enrich their work and give it a deeper and unique perspective.

> Im kinda scared that there is no hope for me if the 'drawing habit' has not caught on yet.
Come on. I understand you are young but only you know what's in your heart. How can this arbitrarily decide whether you 'have hope' or not. What I'm seeing is that you are looking to outside factors to decide whether you are 'worthy' of being an artist. Nip that in the bud, right now.

Once you know what you have to do, you just decide what way you approach it. This has a lot to do with design principals, like shape language and repletion. You will need to create a fictional design that looks like it could actually work. Create some kind of sci fi story (does not have to be complex, something like 'soldiers in a snowy environment and they have to have Armour that can withstand in this environment'). And last but not leas you will need to get a big visually library, this will probably take the longest time of them all.

I recently discovered that when I copy a picture from a drawing book, I dont "see" the picture im my mind wen i try to draw it on paper. Its more like i convert the picture to a set of instructions like :
"make a circle then draw a straight line from it and then draw XYZ 2cm below that..."
I made the same with these Loomis balls, I looked at one ball for 1-2 minutes, but when I tried to draw one of those simple balls I coundnt visualize them properly in my mind.
I mean those balls arent hard to draw ?! Am i too stupid for that ?
I know perspective, and i could reconstruct them using perspective, but at the end i want to draw the balls freehand without helping boxes and guidelines.
Is this normal ?

You have construction but you didn't follow it. You just randomly placed features around the face. Especially eyes are on diffrent heights, too close and at diffrent angle. Remember that thanks to the construction you have CENTER of the form so you can mirror shapes, and also remember about parallel lines.

You must definetly draw a lot simple 3D shapes and connect them. Check out Vilppu book and videos about that.

1. Iron out your idea. If you have a prompt, read it carefully. Try thinking outside the box a bit. Figure out what you want to show and how you want the viewer to feel about it.

2. Thumbnails. Figure out your composition, camera angle, and more at this stage. You can have thumbnails that only depict value shapes (value thumbnails), or even thumbnails that show gesture and movement. Do a dozen or so of them, and pick the best one.
More on thumbnails:
http://pastebin.com/fZM8NdBr

3. Once you've figured out the thumbnails for value, you can also figure out thumbnails for color at this stage (but this can also be done a little later if need be). Here you explore different palettes, lighting scenarios, etc until you have one that works.

4. Exploratory sketches. Try to figure out the individual components of your piece in more detail. Try to do your first sketches for individual parts without ref when possible, then consult refs to clarify. This is to avoid finding a ref and forcing that to work on your piece versus solidifying your own idea, then finding approximate refs to help you. Don't let what you can find on a google search dictate what you place on the canvas.

5. Optional studies. Very related to the last step, but if there's some aspect of the piece that really needs to be nailed perfectly, and you can't quite do it, do some studies to better equip you when it time to do the full piece.

6. Start the full piece. If you were working digitally, you can usually enlarge the thumbnail, mash in the best sketches, lower the opacity and use that as a guide for making a more refined drawing or block-in.

7. Refine the piece, consulting your old refs or any new ones where needed.

________

That's the super meticulous way to maximize your chances of success (or more minimize your chances of failure). The point is to plan everything out beforehand.

Only if you're doing them from references of some sort, preferably life. It's more helpful to first learn about what lighting effects you're observing and how to paint those lighting effects. Different materials basically mixes of lighting effects at different proportions.

First learn the major planes and the anatomy.

Then, draw them a lot from life and from masters. When drawing them from life, try to draw them from various angles and with different lighting directions. Stick to learning the neutral closed mouth first.

Once you can do that, repeat the same process with various expressions to learn more about that.

As a hint, the values and edges you use are very important. If you think of lips symbolically, that will blind you from observing plane changes and the edges that you should be using. The edges, especially around the contour, are generally a lot softer than what you might imagine.

Depends on the platform, but the gist of it is you need a way for people to find you. One of the easiest ways to do that is through fan art, but stick to things that you're genuinely a fan of. People on tumblr or deviantart are more likely to search for "zelda" or "adventure time" than "guy in armor" and "still life".

If you follow a lot of people, you'll get at least a few follow-backs.

For things like tumblr, make sure you tag your posts smartly, using the more popular tags and not the super generic ones like "art". Use terms that people would search for. Also note that only the first 5 or so tags affect whether your piece comes up in search results.

There are also curated blogs that you can submit your art to. The turn around might be a couple of months for the bigger blogs, but you might be able to generate traffic that way.

Keep in mind that I'm pretty new to this self-promotion stuff, so a lot of what I'm saying is stuff I found out by asking around here.

>do you think it's possible to gain a following while not (for lack of better phrase) selling out like that?
Absolutely. It will just take longer as people have to accidentally stumble across whatever it is you do. Fan art expedites the process because fans actively search for fan art.

>can you name some?
Names I've heard when I asked before were:

Art-related:
Tumblropenarts
EatSleepDraw
FuckYeahIllustrativeArt

Gaming fan art related:
nerdsandgamersftw
GameFreaksNZ
it8bit

I've never actually submitted to any of those yet, but in those usually have submission guidelines, and in the description somewhere you'd want to have a hyperlink to your tumblr. To my understanding work submitted to places like these are done as a new submission when it goes up as opposed to them just reblogging you. Because of that the curated version will likely get many more likes than yours on your own tumblr. This is why it's important to link back to your blog.

I should also add:

It isn't really "selling out" if you're drawing things that you genuinely want to draw anyway. If you find yourself doodling variations of Ganondorf in your personal sketchbook that never sees the light of day, then you shouldn't feel bad for doing something a little more polished and posting it online.

You could try to chase trends if you really wanted to, but I don't think that's necessary and you might feel better about your online body of work by not doing that.

I don't have any tips for deviantart, other than submitting your work to relevant groups, and possibly interacting with your fanbase. The fan art effect is probably stronger on deviantart than on tumblr for getting started. That is to say if you don't want to do fanart, you'll probably get noticed faster on tumblr.

To my understanding, deviantart has been on the decline in popularity. It's good to have your work on multiple platforms, but consider that deviantart is frequented by artists (both hobbyist and professional), whereas tumblr has a wider more diverse userbase. The reblogging system is an easy way to gain popularity if you're lucky and one of the popular users reblogs your stuff.

A lot of artists maintain a facebook, but I don't personally think it would help to gain popularity when starting out. Generally only people that already know of your work will find or look for your facebook. I do hear that instagram is on the rise in popularity among artists, but I don't know how that exposure compares to facebook, tumblr or deviantart.

>Join a fandom. I'm already a horsefucker so I know all the ins and outs of the fandom. I know the central image database of the fandom (derpibooru) and I submit there
>I draw porn so right there, that's already a higher chance to get followed
>I also made a rather low skill story tumblr that is relevant to the fandom. The key here is low skill (I mean crappy art). That means it doesn't take much effort to maintain and it pulls in additional fans. http://dazzlequest.tumblr.com if you want to take a look at it.
>I also submit my shit to some porn rebloggers that are mostly relevant to the fandom but since I draw humanized porn I can submit to more general porn rebloggers
>I also recently made a hentai-foundry account and found out that gaining fans there is around 5x faster than it is in tumblr. It does have a skill requirement though
>I have a DA and submit to it too along with some of those groups but gaining fans there is pretty slow. It's also a huge hassle to keep submitting to like 15 groups for every piece you upload.
>I don't really follow/followback people on tumblr/DA/HF since I view it as a hassle and I avoid reblogs whenever I can. There are some exceptions though.
>As for fan interaction, I just talk to them as if I talk to people on 4chan, nothing fancy, sometimes I openly call a person a faggot. It's all cool.
I guess that's all the notable things I did. I hope that helped

So looking at painting videos and they mention that what's in shadow can't be as light as what's facing the light, and what's in the light can never be as dark as something in the shadow. Does it mean in the whole painting, or just for individual colors?

I ask because in a lot of illustrations I see lit black already darker than, let's say, a red cloth's shadow area. I can take guesses like the whole "black absorbs light" thing or people breaking the rules to create contrast, but I'd like something concrete.

Hey d/ic/ks, I dont think this warrants a new thread and you probably get this all the time so I'm asking here.

I'm a /tg/ guy and I always drooled over the artwork of the rulebooks and stuff (specially Frazetta, Erol Otus, Angus Mcbride, the Hildebrant brothers, Wayne Reynolds sucks dicks tho) and decided I finally want in, I wanna learn. I've been lurking your board for like a week now and what I've gathered so far is that Loomis is the be all end all of learning how to draw, even for an absolute begginer like me. Am I right or is the info on the sticky outdated or something?

Also, I've seen what most of you can draw and I figured you could answer me this with absolute, brutal honesty: assuming I put a real effort into it, can I really git gud at drawing if I learn by myself? Is 23 yo too old to get started?

Thanks m80s.

>> No.2094135

>>2094082

it's never too late to get started, but you'll need to start from the most bare-bones shit if you want to git gud.

Start reading Loomis for basic anatomy, Hogarth and Matessi for how2dynamism (anything by Ryan woodward will be of use too), but above all else start practicing; draw circles, spheres, chubes, squares, use those to practice perspective, light and shadow, and don't forget to study the shit out of everything you don't know how to draw.

If you're getting stuck on realism, you can use grids to help you plot things out and measure distances.

We all start small, nigga, but ganbare and you can be as gud as a pro.

Also, don't let "i'm not good enuff yet" stop you from drawing from what you want to draw. >Do any of you have this problem where it's hard to get momentum on a project?

All the fucking time. Less now (since I'm trying to learn to finish shit), but finishing stuff and having finished pieces has always been hard.

What I've found useful is making small thumbs of stuff with light/colour information kinda already dialed in. If you're working from a sketch, same rule applies.
It also helps to work piece by piece instead of jumping around.

Most of the time I listen to music when I paint/draw, and it helps me blank out and get into 'the zone'. I think a lot of the problem is not being in 'the zone' long enough to have acceptable progress on a painting that makes someone jump from a thing to another thing. When difficulties pop up or you get bored, you can also be discouraged---which will make you go work on more sketching b/c it's faster to see something you might consider 'presentable'.

A good way to make yourself finish a piece is to have a clear idea of what you want out if it, hence the thumbnail; sometimes you have an idea, but it's not a //clear// idea and you're just kinda jumping around looking for a way to finish it--- so you focus on the 'interesting' parts, because they're the parts you might be completely sure about.

Anyway this is my suggestions//ideas on it; different things work for different people of course.

copy anime screenshots first that you like. try to break down the scenes and then use what you learned in loomis on them. for example, let's say there's a scene from madoka magica you like. Let's say it's when mami gets her head eaten lol
so you could figure out where the head is, see the perspective and figure out why her body looks like that when she is looking up

eyes are still usually one eye apart. the eye that is farther apart (3/4th view) is smaller in width, but not in height. etc. this is stuff you should learn in loomis. it will help you.

Numbness can point to nerve damage, probably caused by poor form/posture.
The best way to cure it is to simply let the hand rest, and making sure you're not blocking off any nerves when resting it on something.
Maybe get a (different) wristpad?
This is usually a more common problem with thin people because they have less fat to protect their nerves.

If you recognize yourself in some of the things I mentioned, know that the numbness is one of the last things to go away while the nerve heals.
If you continue doing what you're doing, you're going to lose motor skills and potentially cause irreparable damage.

Sure. A lot of the time it's random. Why do we draw the things we draw? I sure can't answer that.

Though you should at least some of the time try to create value with your work. What is valuable to you is up to you to decide.

you can put oils on anything that doesn't absorb oil, and even then you can put a few coats of gesso on it and it'll work. i've used pizza boxes (we were all pretentious once) and they're a few years old now and there hasn't been any decay.

paper works too. the main thing with oil paint is that it you don't let it get flexed a lot over time, but even then it's cool for at least a year, so if you use something floppy make sure you store it well.

yep, you can change how fast oils dry with the medium you use, which is a mix of oil and a solvent. the very fasted will still take about 24 hours for a thinnish layer to get dry to the touch. a medium is a mix of oil and a solvent you use for thinning the oil paints fyi, you can get premixed ones that are pretty good. galkyd etc.

I don't use their pencils (didn't even know they had blue pencils?), but I use their blue 0.5 lead and it's pretty much the best you can get. It is more fragile than your typical lead, but that's really the nature of the lead. Also harder to erase, but that's a given.

Fuck their red lead though.

Howdy Howdy Howdy, I'm trying to cut down on redundancy in my work. I've been told I tend to over render background and non focal point details by others. Not only does this hurt the composition but it also wastes my time. So my question:

Do you fellas have any compositional tips or rules of thumb you use to determine how much rendering you'll need? How do you deal with out of focus objects and the level of rendering to add to far away objects? I hope that makes sense. Thanks.

IMO they are technically excellent, but don't really have much character or storytelling to them. I'd personally prefer something that looked half or a quarter as good but is more interesting.

Sounds like you're just regurgitating other peoples uninformed opinions.

You didn't even give any reasons why you think her art is not technically excellent.

Do you think the colorchoices are bad? Do you think the proportions are off? Do you think the poses are too stiff? Do you think the perspective is off? Do you think the paint is not detailed enough?

Didn't think so, because she's pretty solid if not excellent on all those.

Do a redline/drawover if you want to be taken seriously

Fuck software-specific tutorials, just figure things out as you go. Painting software is not rocket-science. Watch the odd tutorial here and there to learn new tricks (e.g. the ones by David Revoy), hang out in the forum/IRC/deviantart/whatever community for the software you're using, and you're good.
