Its original purpose was to handle graphics on weak computers and systems, which isn't even necessary anymore.

restrictions breed creativity, but there aren't any rules about how many colors you can use or what the canvas size is or anything like that. there isn't a better way to get crisp, detailed, readable images at a given scale than manipulating the individual pixels.

I don't know why I'm even responding to someone whose critical thinking skills are limited to calling art he doesn't like "gay."

I agree that the process is definitely different (than regular digital painting, I assume). I disagree that it shares much with pointilism, I think this relationship is often overstated.

It has more in common with cross-stitching, certain types of beadwork (see: wampum belts),many paintings by Robert Delaunay, and one particular example of dyed wood inlays that is found on a music cabinet at the Detroit Institute of Art (pic related).

It isn't art. In the same way video games aren't work. You can point to people and say this person makes a living off of video games and this person is displayed in galleries with their digital work but it doesn't mean it teaches you the same things that painting traditionally teaches you.

I'd say both video games and digital art are necessary components of art, and that they give people ideas that are pivotal to their traditional work, but it's not the same as applying those ideas to a painting.

The most influential painters to come in the next century are going to be influenced by video games and digital work. Leave it at that. They are important, they aren't the end goal.

well then prove me wrong. learn to stop having sex and masturbating, and only having sex for a child, and only having one child ( learn to be an adult) by working digitally. I didn't learn it until I painted traditionally.

Thats the litmus test. Anything short of complete control over your sexuality and it isn't as important as traditional.

In the same vein I don't think music is art. Music never taught anyone anything about sexuality. It's just talking. You don't learn anything from talking, you just share ideas you already have.

I agree, but as you say:

it's not about the capabilities of the medium as much as who it attracts. though needless to say it's much easier to design and edit sprites on the computer, and at that point you might as well print it out if you want a physical version of your pixel art.

if you can't draw well, you won't be able to make good pixel art. my advice is to first learn the fundamentals of 2d art via drawing (tablet or paper), then take on the additional challenges that are associated with pixel art.

Straight lines are your friend.
Avoid jagged lines.
Diagram attached.

What this means is to avoid chunky bits in the line, and to try and keep a solid ratio going with the pixels.

for example,in the second one I stuck with a base of 3 px, 2 px, then 1 px to complete a curve. You can add or remove pixel numbers from the equation in order to smoothen or sharpen the curve, but in general you want to keep it in a solid pattern.

Be careful using black outlines too heavily, especially if you don't have dark colors in your ramps to bridge the gap to black. also try to avoid too much black outlining on the interior of sprites, it should typically be reserved for defining contours. and if you're using outlines, use them consistently. personally I would have outlined the wings here and not used outlines on the burst around the feet. make sure you're getting the most out of your palette and the colors in your ramps have enough value contrast, the two reds in the text are nearly indistinguishable and the blues in the mane and wings could use much more contrast as well (as could the oranges on the clothing). also it looks like you tried to use some manual anti-aliasing (AA) in the text and circle but it's applied incorrectly. be careful about having outlines that vary between one and two pixels thick (see bottom of hip on our left, bottom of jaw). the drop shadow isn't working and just flattens the image.

>>2098247
mspaint is terrible for pixelart, EVEN if you do the very clean, simple, orthogonal/isometric kind of pixel-art (which is what mspaint s>>2098247
cks the least for.)

- no color management
- can't import & export palettes
- no easy color-grading, other filters that can be useful are also missing
- no easy way to restrict your color-space
- no good "dirty" tools, transforms, brushes etc
- no layers
- no easy way to put a high-res layer on top of a low-res one (e.g. to sketch in high-res first and then convert to pixel-art, or to draw over a high-res reference)
- no overview dockers, no canvas flip
- no good tablet workflow -- you can pixel with a mouse, but you're not nearly as agile as with a tablet + tablet-aware software that lets you zoom, rotate the canvas in a very agile manner as well as not destroy your wrists after working 8 hours a day on your pixelart for a month
- no animation support of any kind
- no support for HD index painting

Even gimp is better than mspaint. If you want an actual good way to do pixel-art, search youtube for "hd index painting in krita" (free) or "hd index painting photoshop" (costs, obviously), both of which have all of these features, or, if you want to be more "minimalist" at least use asesprite (older versions are free) or graphicsgale. I wouldn't recommend mspaint even to a casual.

Note that I haven't fired up mspaint since WinXP, if any of these issues are fixed in later versions, disregard them.

oh, also, if you're freestyling your colors rather than using a palette, mspaint does not have a high-quality color selector (so you'll probably make worse colorchoices using it), and no automatic dithering.

>the original mspaint is actually the best program for making pixel art.
are you high? mspaint isn't built for pixel art. it has only the most basic tools, terrible palette control options, inability to save as gif, no animation support, lacks robust keyboard shortcuts, etc.

please don't give advice if you don't know the medium.

LOL?

so you're suggesting that people use vector based photo editors instead? Are you high?

GIMP and Photoshop are not acceptable for pixel editing, period you dumb clown.

the original MSpaint is one of the only PIXEL based photo editors, theres nothing fancy sure, its just good old fashioned, pixel by pixel manipulation.

animation supports irrelevant, you make it frame by frame, or you make the things that need to be animated seperately and superimpose it onto the background image.

all you need for pixel art is a line tool, a pencil tool, and a good fill tool, go take your photobashing somewhere else.

Nice, that sure adds validity to your argument. if theres a better pixel based, alternative to MSpaint be my guest and post it...

but you're just a fucking poser, so obviously i dont expect you to actually come up with any.

give one good fucking reason why you should be doing PIXEL art on a VECTOR based PHOTO EDITING SOFTWARE like gimp/photoshop (you shouldnt.)

that really leaves no other option BESIDES MSPAINT... it literally is the best choice for pixel art, theres nothing else like it.

Sure, it could use layers and transparency support, but besides that its almost perfect for what it is.

Uh, you clearly have no grasp on the difference between pixel and raster-software.

krita, mypaint, gimp, graphicsgale, photoshop, asesprite, mspaint are raster-editors. All of these can be used for pixel-art.

krita and photoshop have optional vector-tools, but most people don't use them.

illustrator, xara, inkscape et al are vector-based tools. These are not suited for pixel-art.

no-where has he mentioned any vector-software (or any software at all) in his post.

It is completely untrue that mspaint is one of the only pixel based photo editors. There are literally thousands out there.

You clearly have never animated anything, otherwise you would not think animation support is irrelevant. Onion skinning, timeline scrubbing, dope-sheets et cetera are all important tools when doing animation, when painting each frame by hand. Without these tools (especially onion skinning) your animations will be shit.

It's also good to, you know, be able to actually play and preview your animation, something mspaint cant do.

It's very clear that you've never animated anything and that you don't know the difference between vector and raster, so before you embarrass yourself further, I suggest you educate yourself.

Photoshop is good for making pixel art but there are other programs that are specially geared towards pixel art and pixel art animation. Like Graphicsgale.

promotion, grafx2, photoshop, graphicsgale, gimp, pixen...
all you have to do is adjust your photoshop setting for pixelart and it's good to go, much quicker to use and more versatile than mspaint
>but you're just a fucking poser
been pixelling for a decade. you? I pixelled for years in MSpaint, when I switched to grafx2 I was kicking myself for how much time I'd wasted in a completely inefficient program. There's literally no reason to choose MSpaint over any of the other available options.

The term 'art' is thrown around loosely these days, art should be used as a tool of expression, something you use to express your feelings... Most of the stuff here is just general illustration and design. Discuss

illustration is capable of expressing feelings, and I think there's plenty of work ITT that qualifies as a form of expression.

art is difficult to define, its meaning has changed over time and today it has multiple meanings. what you're describing seems to be "fine art", or "art for arts sake." most of the work in this thread (hell, most of the work on this board), is not what most would call "fine art", but I think a lot of it (excluding the work ITT that's clearly made for videogames) is "art for art's sake", even if the subject matter isn't "2deep4u."

even some of the videogame backgrounds ITT express a certain mood though.

I don't know how to draw, I just like to look at pics but pixel art to me is best art.

They are so evocative and wonderful. I guess I grew up on old video games and that's why I like them so much.
