2080784 No.2080784 [Reply] [Original]

"To any man who has slaved to acquire skill in his art, it is most irritating to have his ability referred to as a gift. Perhaps there is one genius in a hundred years or more who can achieve perfection by divine inspiration. I have never met such a man, and I do not know any successful artist who did not get there by the sweat of his brow."

Previous Thread: >>2073899

A general message to aspiring artists: "Lack of knowledge can be greater torture than the effort of acquiring it. When all is said and done, nature is your best instructor."

Submit your drawings, receive feedback or critique others! Share your knowledge and remember to thank those who've critiqued or red-lined your drawings. Most importantly, have fun.

This thread is meant for artists who might want to try to make stylized work in-between their studies. It is strongly recommended that you use this thread in conjunction with learning the elements and fundamentals of art. You can also discuss the visual elements of various professional artists as well if you keep it relatively articulate and civil.

Whoever makes the animu threads tends to use an image from the previous thread in the OP. Don't know why it's done differently than the draw thread, but that's how it's been for quite some time.

For what it's worth I do like your image, and I think it has potential. The OP of the thread probably liked the image too, and hence it's here.

We've had this argument before, It was titled Anime/Manga before all you started to complain that it would attract the autists from /a/ and shit up /ic/ with bad drawings. The title is staying as is, it's not a big deal.

If you want to get technical about it, you can say that the proportions as well as the subject matter has been exaggerated to meet an alternative art criteria.

>> No.2081024

>>2081019

One thing I learned over the years is that people are going to fucking complain no matter what you do, so just do whatever makes the best thread possible. General threads work best when they're vague and all encompassing cause the more specific you get the more low effort circle-jerky bullshit you get, and this place is shitty enough as is.

>> No.2081032

>>2081019
I never complained about that, but I remember it was because /co/ felt excluded. Not because of traffic from /a/, you just fucking made it up, fucking hater. If there was that complain, it was because of trolls who shit on anime to rustle our jimmies, cause it's sooo funny to watch our reactions hee-hee, fucking underage little shits, i hope they all die from an accident or become obese or penniless human trash.

>> No.2081039

>>2081034
Because the regular draw threads shy away from stylization and exaggerating proportions since all they're interested in is copying a picture and getting it to as close to it as possible like a human xerox machine in the hopes they can learn something to eventually do what we do here.

>> No.2081062

>>2081034

Draw threads from what I seen are generally more illustration focused, with a strong emphasis on realistic anatomy. Normally you would just combine both threads together and call it a day but you're forgetting this is 4chan and no one here is mature enough to deal with different tastes and opinions. Because of that you'll get "stop liking what I don't like" shitstorms and idiots who can't understand that people have different end goals with their art.

So that's why a separate draw thread and a stylization thread is required.

>> No.2081094

So choose a pic with stylization in it, damnit. I wouldn't be able to find the thread without the title.

They say the best way to retain what you've learned is to teach so here I go.

There a lot of problems with your gesture and you don't seem to have a center line to guide where certain body parts are supposed to go. The figure in your drawing seems to have all of her features shoved to her right even though it's in 3/4 view. The head also looks like it's attached closer to her left shoulder.

I've read that every illustration is essentially made of four types of lines. Curves, counter curves, horizontal, and vertical. Pretty much straights vs curves. You might want to look into that along with perspective.
This isn't the best redline, but I hope it helps.

Her left shoulder is a little bit far.

Even though her leg is straight, there should be an indication of her knee caps.
You should also express her calf muscle a bit. Be careful not to exaggerate it.

Regarding the feet, in this perspective we should be seeing the feet from above.

remember that the ribcage is not an oval, it's egg shaped, which means it is narrow at the top. it being egg shaped helps make space for the shoulder and clavicles. try it out.

also for stylization, sometimes people will draw animu girls with thinner/smaller ribcages to make them look less sturdy than they need to be.
in your case, just compare the ribcage with the thin arms (they also may be a little too thin). anatomically, the arms barely have any space because the ribcage takes up so much space vertically.
as for the armpits, it's the same problem with the ribcage. your ribcage takes up so much space that you barely know where to place them. the whole thing needs to be placed lower, and as i mentioned before the arms are too thin.

also remember that this is all relative. the arms wouldn't look as thin if the ribcage wasn't this big and vice versa etc.

R: eyes are too close together. they need to be about 1 eye apart. the neck looks really thick, almost fat with a chin like that. a little less would've done the job.

L: looks weeb-ish
try to break down the lines more, especially when it comes to the eyes. it's fine to break the line at the corners or other places. keep it simpler.
making them completely round and googly looking like that doesn't work unless you're drawing a more cartoony style.

to add something: the "small ribcage" is kind of a stylistic thing, you you need to be careful, as it's all relative. if you're not your heads will seem too big or your bodies too frail, or both. so feel free to dismiss this entirely.

the important part is the egg shape, and leaving space for the shoulder and clavicles. proko recently did a good video on the ribcage, check it out.

I spent a lot of time on the skin and messing with Manga Studio's Movement Blur tool. Not the most intuitive or easy thing to use and every adjustment had me waiting several seconds up to a minute to render. PitA!

But yes, I do consider it finished although I've gotten feedback that I need to put at least some features of Ryuko's face in there, even if it's just part of the mouth. However, the focus is Senketsu's eye and the rest is just gravy.

Whatup fellow sailor moon fan

Nice scene but the right side has nothing going on and the composition is a bit flat looking. But some nice work with details might overcome that. Think about some ways to spice up the bg

Luna is hard to see, color is too similar in bench.
Usagi seems made of tissue paper, if strong wind blows she will fall over. This is to say she doesnt seem to have solid form. Solidify her forn underneath her clothing.

Vales in general need pushing. Theres lots of discussion about values all over ic. Read up and try applying some ideas.

I think more unique touches like your choice of colors in usagis hair (pretty!) can help to make it stand out.

Very nice feeling overall, and not because im a biased moonie^^

Some reason people have really dumb definitions of what chicken scratch is but the general consensus is that you're too "chicken" to draw a arc/wave/circle/ellipse with a single stroke that you end up scratching a bit at a time so that it looks wobbly as fuck or fuzzy (it will still show through even through copious erasing). Going on over the same line multiple times searching for the perfect line is not chicken scratch (pic related). Autistically separating your Is, Cs, and Ss (lines, arcs, waves) is not chicken scratch either.

Here's a video on exercises on how to gain speed and line confidence
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wgDNDOKnArk

With that being said, your lines for the most part still show signs of chicken scratching but you're getting there.

Thank you for the feedback!
I actually wanted the castle to stand out a bit of the background and the mountains to "fade" in the background (thats why they arent darker). So that the wall in the background is like a line, and on the top of that the rest of the background.

I did considere what you suggested, but in the end... I decided to keep it the way it was. Since I can't remove it if I messed up. ;_; But thank you, I will see if I do what you said in another artwork I do in the future with a similar setting (which will happen sooner or later)!

ID's can reveal so much.

What if that one anon your always agreeing with turns out to be Firez?
What if it turns out that he's the only one liking your stuff?
What if it turns out that the one anon you really do like is the one who shits on all your stuff?
What if it turns out that the trolls are really /ic/ celebrities?
What if it turns out that with the tumblr threads we can all finally see who the real assholes and trolls actually are?

And what would happen if everybody knew who that one anon was, that goes around on the entire board whining incessantly about trolls and shitposters and jellyfags?

Would we still want ID's then?

>> No.2086421

>>2086405
>muh trolls!

There's no such thing as trolls, the only time you call out trolls is when there's something you don't like, when you don't agree with something or when someone hurts your fee-fees. I highly doubt that ID's would have any effect we would still have that one faggot, we would still have jellies and we will still have the same asspain when someone subtly posts photobashing money making Kron or Sakimi.

>> No.2086426

>Would we still want ID's then?
because the majority of the people who post on /ic/ are really bitter amateurs who give bad advice and when theyre called out on it they get all insecure and pissy and try to defend their bad advice

if your work is shit and you're giving out advice, then it's much easier to call you out on it

I don't see how people can get mad at someone for liking someone's work.

it actually wouldn't be easier. not to mention you're expecting obedience from everyone who browses this board and it's much easier to just not do that.

As an idea I can see where you are coming from but it will not make sense.
Some people are painters and can give valid critique on drawings.
Some people work in 3D and can give valid critique in 2D.
etc. etc..

The only thing is to encourage more paintovers/redlines or something to that effect
