Hi guys, I figured I'd start a thread like the tower girls thread, where everyone takes an attempt at one subject. Unlike the draw thread, please only post art related to the topic.

Today's focus: Mater Dolorosa
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Our_Lady_of_Sorrows
>Our Lady of Sorrows (Latin: Beata Maria Virgo Perdolens), the Sorrowful Mother or Mother of Sorrows (Latin: Mater Dolorosa), and Our Lady of Piety, Our Lady of the Seven Sorrows or Our Lady of the Seven Dolours are names by which the Blessed Virgin Mary is referred to in relation to sorrows in her life. As Mater Dolorosa, it is also a key subject for Marian art in the Catholic Church.

>The Seven Sorrows of Mary are a popular Roman Catholic devotion. In common religious Catholic imagery, the Blessed Virgin Mary is portrayed in a sorrowful and lacrimating affect, with seven daggers piercing her heart, often bleeding.

So draw the mother mary, lamenting over her loss of christ, and you may or may not choose to include the 1-6 daggers piercing her heart (often stylized)

If you need more inspiration, google "Mater Dolorosa"

Nice concept, but I don't know if it will really be successful.

I was thinking of making one for moral/allegorical history/mythological paintings (including indepth discussion) but there doesn't seem to be much interest for that, even among traditional painters.

That's a shame. Personally, I love doing and looking at iconographic stuff using things from religious and mythological work. Even if it's shallow and just for aesthetic.

Bump because I'm making an related concept for a toy doll as a angel and a saint together. Unfortunately the toy company does not accept Religious imagery on a franchise of demonic creatures to submit.

Otherwise I have to play tricks of closer designs they can accept.

Well, there's a lot of people who study some iconography but it's more like learning words and not learning grammar structure, you know? It's more like trivia now. The ones who understand them the most don't actually paint. They give lectures and write stuff for jstor or something. It's a difficult subject to first get into because it covers a wide range of subjects, and the people who specialize in studying iconography/logy in addition to paintings look into a lot of philosophy, history, poetic literature, emblem books, and even alchemy and some astrology and have to constantly connect parallels in them.
