I've seen some paintings done by Ruan Jia and i really like the feel they have. It's reather hard to explain but the objects seem to actually have their correct weight and feel. Like his armors seems to be made of metal and not paint.

So my question can anyone tell or guide me closer to how it is done? :)

Will pose some more examples of his armor styles. :)

It has maybe to do with how he indicate the materials like texture, and material interaction with the environment in the painting for to make it more believable, while indicating the thickness of the plates on the armor.

For the pose, he probably used some references, and also was a result of his figure drawing studies. He probably could imagine roughly how his figures would look like and try drawing something based on that.

find object of different material (high/low gloss plastics, fabrics)
study in different lighting

its the same method for studying anything, but it really shouldnt be methodological; let your interest drive your studies
