Lots of their art is learned by imitation, not studies.
Also the tools are limited, and so is the time too. I've seen some beautiful stuff made in places where graffiti was allowed, but the more illegal placed don't allow much refined work.
also some of the graffiti codes are pretty cryptic, and fascinating I have to say.
