Dear ic:

what is the best way to learn from references: Just drawing-copying them blindly, or draw them by memory just seeing once?

How you do train that way?

Here´s a quicky one with the ref of course (critiques more than welcomed):

Don't try to 100% render based on the photo (what you are doing right now). Instead focus on the planes of the face, direction of light, and large shapes. For some people working in grayscale is usually a good place to start because it helps to see the direction of light and shadow planes easier. pic related.

Should I guess the color when painting instead of using the dropper?

>> No.2061995

>>2061993
Guess the color, then check how close you were with the eyedropper (make sure it's set to more than just 1 pixel). Eventually you'll see if you keep choosing colors that are too saturated, too cool, etc.

Don't guess, know. What I mean is study the different hues in a persons' face, find the general tone and try to work from that. As for objects and clothes light plays a large part in what you see vs what it really is (a green tree will be a dark shade of blue at night etc.). Go into one of the tutorial threads there should be some stuff that can describe this better than I can atm but here is an example for faces.

Yeah that works, but don't just focus on one reference or one photo do a set of photos from different references, observe the different values in each, direction of light on the form, etc. Here's where I'm at to kind of give an example, some are better than others but that is why you do more than one b/c you'll learn and try different things.

It could be that the eye on our right is a tiny bit far out but you'll want to look at any values around the eye socket that maybe need addressing - it's all pretty flat so it's got a little bit of anime sticker-eye syndrome. So see if there are any value changes near the inner corner of the eye or under it, anywhere the structure of the eye socket should be showing.

Bodies in animu are generally much closer to reality than the faces. You're allowed to make the eyes big because it's just a matter of proportion. If you bend the body in a way that isn't possible, it just looks painful (because it's supposed to be representing a real body)

Anon’s beautiful landscape scene depicts Usagi, dressed in a voluminous, white dress, without a veiled hat, carrying a parasol. She is standing on a hill of green and yellow, silhouetted against a not-so dazzling blue, swirling sky. Chibiusa is standing off in the background in the field, as a moment is captured in a painting. The moment depicted seems to be Usagi catching a glimpse of someone looking at her.
Anon’s masterful depiction of light shows in this painting. There is also a very convincing depiction of movement in the air. Anon captures the fleeting effects of the sunlight, using shades of dark and light colors to indicate shadows, and sunlit areas, which is characteristic of his style. The grass is created with abbreviated, comma-like strokes, and quick, strong, wispy strokes of varying size and direction create the boundless sky, in an informal but masterful way.
Usagi is made to look majestic or statuesque due to perspective, yet the true subjects of Anon’s paintings are color and movement. The way in which he mixes colors, creating shadows, and the brushstroke creating fluidity, make the scene realistic, with the viewer almost feeling the openness of the outdoors. Although Anon created this painting as an experiment, and for his own practice, it is one of his most famous paintings. It is currently in the Draw Thread of 4chan board /ic/.

STOP JUSTIFYING CHICKENSCRATCH, FUCKER.

Not the anon you're replying to, but I passionately hate anyone who give shitty advice that can potentially set learning artists many steps back just for allowing themselves an excuse to chickenscratch. Chickenscratch is an amateur's hesitation to commit to their lines. What looked like "chickenscratch" in professional rough sketches are just quick sketches to get the idea across quickly.

I would rather have learning artists make mistakes than chickenscratch. No erasing that mistake when practicing, since those errors not only serve as a reminder, rubbing that eraser on paper fucks the paper up. Erasers also give that "safety net" to keep fucking up.

What a pile of bullshit. This isn't chickenscratch, just normal sketching while discovering the subject. Chicken scratch happens when people don't commit to making mistakes and then draw a line out of dots for 10 minutes.

Errors happen all the time, just fix them. But you can pretend to be hardcore with a pen and redraw the same thing over and over like a dumb photocopier. Which is totally gonna put any imagination you had to sleep and suck the fun out of drawing.

And fuck the paper. Except you were stupid enough to pay $10 per sheet. It's there to be fucked up.

Your advice may hold for a professional who draws since 10 years, but even there, it's their decision.

probably finish mainly.

it doesn't have to be all polished up spick and span but it does need consistency, a 'style' basically. (even though /ic/ hates that word)

[you can stop reading here if you're okay with the concept of a consistent style]

like think of a font, each letter is related to the other letters so when you see them arranged in text there's an overall impression and no jarring inconsistencies.

you want to have the same thing with your pictures, your 'A' has to be in the same style as your 'B' and both 'A' and 'B' have to fit into the overall impression you want to make.

Hey guys, it's the original poster of the "chickenscratch" image. This was a doodle that became a character study. None of this was meant to be super amazing. I was wanting feedback on the style and if it somewhat resembled the original style. I agree chicken scratch is not good and makes a piece looks like a child did it, but it was just to get a rough outline of the anatomy. I appreciate those defending it but it was kinda meant to be a rough sketch. Nothing final.

The face doesn't look crap because it's rendered poorly, it looks crap because the construction is way off.
The far eye is a lot smaller and further down the face than the close one. I would also try moving the lips further up the face, closer to the nose.
