I'd add a serial number to the chest.
The coloring is what's bland, though. It's just generic and doesn't have a lot of personality. The character is also very symmetric; especially those two pouches, one on each side. Besides that antenna on the head, everything is symmetric and it really hurts the drawing.

That's pretty bad. Perspective, construction, gesture are what you should learn. Perspective because it aids construction, construction because it's what you should be doing and gesture because it helps in analyzing the reference and telling a story.

One tool to use: check negative spaces. For example: look at the space in between your model's right arm and side and the reference's right arm and side, also right below your model's left boob and the reference's right boob.

>> No.2051985

Analyze, don't copy. Having a perfectly copied figure doesn't mean jack shit. You want to understand the volumes. Look at those breasts, for instance. You didn't understand them at all. Observe how they curve around the ribcage.
Don't be afraid to exaggerate. Don't aim for a perfect copy. Push that gesture.

>> No.2051994

>>2051963
if you use a reference, as long as proportions and volumes are right, there's nothing wrong if the copy is not perfect. There are some errors here and there, and please draw hands and feet, but the result is not bad.

his head has a slight tilt that you're leaving out. his nose is wider than in your drawing, and correspondingly, his eyes are slightly wider apart in the picture, they're also more narrow. his mouth is too small, and there isn't a clear distinction between his face and his multi-chin yet , so it makes his face looks too small for his head.

keep at it. since you're drawing digitally, mark some angles on your refs to keep your proportions correct.

I think you're copying Loomis too much. You should draw your own potato heads.
Actually, scratch that. Draw carrot heads. Draw apple heads. Draw eggplant heads. Try to construct with all the shapes you can, arrange them in all kinds of ways. Try to get a handle on actually constructing.
If you want to switch to figures, then do this with figures. I could whip up a demonstration if you like.

I'm pretty satisfied with myself. I'll get an anatomy book after I finish the eight weeks so I can fill in the gaps, and after that I should be good enough to draw figures from imagination.

Well, I've been pretty much drawing all my life, man. Ever since I could hold a pencil.
My first encounter with an "art book" was with a Disney magazine that taught both drawing and writing. It was full of great advice I had no idea how to use.
It was in 2012 that I started glancing at Loomis and getting utterly bored of his shit. Never got past the twentieth page. Pic related is a scan from that period. I then gradually stopped drawing. This shat up my skills. A year or two later I bought a book by Bammes and Color and Light by James Gurney but haven't learned shit from them aside from proportions and some stuff about reflected light. I was absolutely lazy.

A year ago I started working through Drawing on the Right Side of the Brain. I never finished it, but I learned sighting and measuring.

What followed was a long hiatus, and only now, since about four months ago, I'm drawing seriously. I continued with Scott Robertson's "How to Draw" for perspective, but I wasn't interested in the industrial design part and I skipped it. Then I got into Hampton.

I dedicate my time to this and focus on it intensely. I take notes and draw along. You just need to put in the effort and make it a routine.

So yeah, here you go. Sorry for shitting up the thread with my story.

>> No.2053269

>>2053253
It's not really that bad. It's pretty average.
Specifically:

1. The sternocleidomastoid attaches to the back of the head, under the ear. It follows the cylinder of the neck, then through a tendon attaches to the pit of the neck. There's also a bit coming off and attaching to the clavicle.
In your drawing, this is absent. It's just "oh, well, a line from here to here, I guess that's enough."

2. Pectoralis majoris and minoris. The former should attach to the arm and stretch a little with it. The latter, in your rather muscular character, should bulge out from under the pectoralis majoris.

3. Serratus and obliques. Where are they? You've drawn a pretty muscular character so they should show.

4. The "six-pack" you're drawing is wrong. The abdominal muscles have eight divisions, and you've started from under the sternum (!). This creates a non-existant band between pectoralis majoris and abdominal muscles (!!).
You've also considered the last part of the abdominals, attaching to the pubic bone, as two different "packs." (!!!)

5. Latissimus dorsi. Where that shit at nigga?

6. Those legs have basically no correct muscles, or at least I can't tell with the chicken scratch.

7. The arms. The deltoids should attach just above the medial part of the outer humerus. This is especially evidently wrong in the character's left arm, where they just kind of... bunch up against the trapezius.
The brachiales is also missing. It should clearly mark the division between biceps and triceps.
Forearm, I don't even know what's going on there.

I would redline it but it's late and I'm tired.

Whee! Life drawing session! Dude's got really pronounced shoulder blades.
I had a habit of being very tight and chicken-scratchy, so I've been doing Peter Han's exercises and forcing myself to use conte charcoal on newsprint for the first time instead of graphite pencil on paper.

I think I've made a lot of progress compared to my work two months ago, but there's still a lot to work on.

I think I need to take more time to eye out proportions. Eye's a little high and legs/arms a bit weird. I had some bad lines which I restated. The whole thing's pretty messy, particularly in the definition of hands and feet (I'll have to remember to bring charcoal pencil next time).

Also, though I tried my best to not to "lie" (Force: Dynamic Life Drawing), I did have times where I got confused by the pose and failed to capture the actual feeling of the pose and merely copied the pose like a coward. Gestures are still hard as fuck for me, and it sometimes shows.

What else is wrong? What else could be improved? I'm so fucking excited that I'm making progress; I just want to get better and better and better.

Actually that's not too terrible if you're new to this. Sounds like you are, and that's fine. From a beginner's standpoint, the main issues are with the character. I'd recommend doing things in black and white for a good while and learn how light interacts with forms. Color is too complex for you at this level, and so you end up with a muddy, foggy looking rendering.

You got the proportions and construction wrong, and then proceeded to render. And you got that wrong too.

Notice how in the original picture you can actually tell there's a neck behind her hair. I can't in your drawing; it feels as if she has a really thin neck. Notice also the angle of the clavicle, the pit of the neck and the values around them.
Pay closer attention to your reference.

Look even Sycra who is heralded like almost a chosen one on here, and is an ok artist is shit in certain areas. You could be an amazing artist and make breathtaking landscapes and then suck donkey balls at figure.

There was a guy on /ic/ last week i think who was pretty good at copying realistic stuff with pencil, but when he tried drawing from imagination, he was kindergarten tier.

People who are here try to improve and some do, the rest can gtfo. And the ones you linked, sure, they show some understanding, but you can get that in a bunch of hours. Its still beginner stuff and requires a shitton of polishing.

Your drawing is somewhat muddy. You need to work on line quality; when you get down to the chair, the details are really hard to make out. In fact, I don't even understand if he has a piece of cloth on the chair or not.
Otherwise, it's fine. Maybe from a proportion standpoint it's a bit wonky horizontally, but I can't tell without seeing the model myself.

>> No.2055068

>>2055063

Noted. I'll do my best to improve next time.

And yes, there is a bit of horizontal distortion, which is another error I didn't notice. I began to be aware of that when I started drawing the chair and realized that it was a bit more horizontal than it should of been.

Thanks again!
