I'm finding it very had to actually "muh style" things. It all just kinda looks the same, but with very slight differences.
I mean, it's easy to see when you're comparing it directly against another (pic related)--- but how does one pin-point and define what ones natural style actually is on it's own when drawing? Does it just happen?

this is really confusing to me, why would choose to draw things in your style when clearly you get better results emulating any other style than your own? Ultimately you want a good drawing even if it's derivative that's still better than what you've got going on in the top left.

That's just the thing, I don't really know how to 'develop' a useful style, which is why I asked. I've been drawing this way out of whatever habits, but I only notice next to other styles. It's not very difficult to emulate another style. Even the realistic-ish one was a whatever.

It's really common to go down that road, loads of people, including myself have been through exactly the same thing I think it's just part of the natural process. Art isn't always fun, but don't fall into the trap of only doing studies and completely sucking the life out of it. If it helps I would suggest trying to wrap your head around form/values. For me the best thing for that was to look at/study sculpture. Just a better understanding form has improved my art so much.

This trend of drawing characters smiling and with their eyes closed is so overplayed at this point. I hate it. It's as lazy as the Dreamworks grin. It comes off as smug every single time, and any time it's used to imply shyness, the only attitude you actually perceive is someone who's holier than thou.

Your idea of what "style" is is very unsophisticated. You basically think whatever unique quirks and habits a person injects into their art becomes their style, so all they need to do is git gud and their unique style will happen naturally. That is not what stylization is.

Real stylization is based on principles of design. Shape design, understanding simplification and exaggeration both in drawing and color / value choices. APPEAL, what makes a shape appealing to look at, what combinations of shapes are appealing, what do certain shapes communicate to the audience. These things are impossible to just pick up by accident, they need to be studied just like everything else.

An atelier student who is absolutely amazing at drawing the human figure, who has an incredible understanding of anatomy, perspective, depth etc could never draw like Glen Keane or Milt Kahl unless he also spent many years working on improving at stylization. You don't have infinite time on this world, you need to spend it wisely. If you don't study stylization, you will never be good at it. Don't delude yourself into thinking you will just pick it up naturally by studying realism. That's not going to happen.

I understand that, but I made a judgement call based on the work that anon showed. he's clearly not at the point where thinking about developing a unique style is going to be beneficial to him in the long run. I never specifically talked about realism either, I said focus on becoming a better artist, you just assumed I meant study realism. Although stylized work is an abstraction of reality so yeah naturally it will help if you have a solid understanding of that. You can't stylize what you don't understand. I'm not deluding myself but thanks for your concern anyway.

that's ambient occlusion in the bottom left. Wherever light has difficulty reaching will be occluded so think about creases and where forms overlap. Also only paint in values while you try to figure this stuff out, colour will just complicate things, as you get a better understanding of form you will be able to see the relationship between colour and value as well

Yeah I know what you mean I think the reason it feels harder is because you can't hide your lack of understanding of form. because there's so little going on it just makes it all that more apparent when you get it wrong. You can learn an awful lot from photos alone, I'm not saying don't study from life but my reasoning for using photographs for this particular exercise is again just to cut down on anything that could possibly distract you. If you're studying a statue IRL you've might have to deal with multiple light sources, inconsistent lighting if it's outside, other people are a distraction. In the privacy of your own home there's no pressure to do something masterful, you're just trying to learn so it doesn't matter if it looks shit. Not to mention the hassle of organizing a trip to a gallery etc etc, there's a surprising amount of time wasted trying to do it that way. For example I grabbed some images off pinterest, you can find loads like this, see how nice that is, no colours, no background, simple light sources, much easier to wrap your head around IMO.
The thing is a lot of these value changes are really subtle and it was hard for me to notice at first until I stripped away all the bullshit and looked at just the form. I suppose that's why bargue plates are popular you're basically doing the same thing.

This is something I've never heard of, but looking it up I recognize it holy shit. Thank you.
It's also nice to know about the pictures, because yeah I mean, the nearest galleries to me are in LA, and it's honestly really distracting trying to study anything out in public. It thought maybe about buying some of those smaller busts or facial features to have something to do from life, but it's good to know pictures are still good sources. I usually use pintrest for references, so it should be easy.
So far, stripping away the BS parts is proving harder than it should be, but I'm going to keep trying to study these statues and Bargue plates, so hopefully that will do something for me.

I don't normally draw that much stylized but I have recently picked it up since I've noticed that it helps me a lot with line confidence and I can transition that into my paintings. So it's pretty sloppy but It reminds me of gameboy games for some reason.

stylization of marceline from adventure time...

>> No.2061213

>>2061162
Grotesque for the sake of being grotesque never comes off as good, it always comes off as childish. your chicken scratch lines subtracted from any rhythm the style would give you to begin with, and make the remaining work messy and unfocused

another thing, what was the point? you abstracted so much, that there is no way that this character would ever be viewed as marceline, unless you tell everyone viewing it. If you made it to a style similar to AT, or didn't strip her unnecessarily, keeping her clothing. just something, anything to make the character recognizable. I really think your goal was to just draw a grotesque being for the fuck of it, but you then stapled it as fan art to gain appeal. I mean, I don't even watch the fucking show and I know she has bite marks on her neck

Your lacking the most basic, rudimentary understanding of anatomy, construction and composition. I suggest you work on those for a few months before attempting a piece like this again
