A thread for him, and other artists who use vivid radiant colors, super sharp contours, or dramatic imagery.

I'll contribute.

This is my favorite painting by Boogero

he doesn't use sharp contours, they're soft as soft can be. like an airbrush painting. they just look that way because they're compressed when you see them tiny on the screen. they're big paintings irl.

Isn't a sharp contour really subjective then?

Were the paintings meant to be viewed from up close? If not then, from the intended perspective, they have sharp contours.

just food for thought.

I really like when he paints portraits in shadow, for some reason he makes them look really crisp, I don't know how to explain it.

Not my favorite painting of his, but for the sake of seeing the artist, here's one of his self portraits.

you can see the difference between a really sharp line and a compressed soft line from a distance irl. and yes you're supposed to go up close too. otherwise licking the finish would be pointless.

like if you've ever seen an airbrush painting on a van, it's the same sort of thing.

sort of like slightly out of focus photos.

he's right though, there are 1, maybe 2 dramatic images in this thread. by and large he painted placid children and pretty ladies in repose.

>The critic and poet Théophile Gautier was very complimentary: "Gianni Schicchi throws himself at Capocchio, his rival, with a strange fury, and Monsieur Bouguereau depicts magnificently through muscles, nerves, tendons and teeth, the struggle between the two combatants. There is bitterness and strength in this canvas – strength, a rare quality!” In fact, Bouguereau here shows great boldness. He is exploring the aesthetic boundaries: exaggerating the muscle structure to the point of distorting it, exaggerating the poses, contrasting colour and shadows, depicting monstrous figures and groups of damned souls. We are particularly reminded of the sublime visions of Romantic artists like Blake (1757-1827), Füssli (1741-1825), and Lawrence (1769-1830). Everything in this painting underlines the feeling of terribilita and horror: a theme to which Bouguereau would never again return.
It's his style.
