Are these from refs turned into lolis?

Shoulders/boob are wonky with the girl in the right drawing. Your faces look like they had a stroke. Watch the placement of your features. Do some construction and planning for the arms, boobs, face features.

Stop chopping off the feet or they will fall behind.

Pretty good though, keep it up m8

>>2038217
This doesn't apply to only you, but what is with the reductive line work? The lines look like they were carved out with an eraser instead of drawn in a single stroke. I guess I am not a fan of that look. Otherwise, his left arm looks a little puny, and the top of his chest piece looks a bit off.

>Eyeball angles. If you have an image and place dots on it, the other dots can be found by referencing an angle from at least two other dots that will intersect there. So, if I draw two lines from two different locations that intersect somewhere, their angle determines the proportion. If I make the distance between the two reference dots smaller, and then draw the same angled lines towards an intersection, that intersection will be a proportionately equal distance to the references as the time I did it and the references were further apart.

>Basically, if you don't want to measure it out with a pencil your options are to either draw a grid, do it intuitively, or find a reference point. maybe the references would be the end of the ear and the bottom of the chin, and the point you want to find is the left most edge of one of the eyes, and then you try to work out the angle from the chin to the eye, and the ear to the eye, draw those lines and look for where they intersect. That is where the edge of the eye is. Th

>This depends on your ability to accurately see angles, but if you can then you can scale up or scale down an image as much as you want. The further away your points are tho, the larger the room for error.

Interesting way of measuring proportions on organic objects. How do I improve my angle accuracy? I'm guessing just keep practicing, yeah?

I basically drew lines on every corner (made a box, basically) and drew in the cup. It seems a off, but I'm not sure how to check my work.

When creating the box, I didn't know how to make sure I wasn't make the cup too wide, too tall, or making the hole too big. How would I check that?

I'll give an advice you but keep in mind I'm a beginner too. (altrough I went trough FWAP and Edwards' DotRSotB).
When I started my drawings looked like that too, however I never done that dot method you mentioned.
Well it needs practice and being sure about yourself to not redraw the same line over and over, and getting more comfortable with long lines.
I also noticed my drawings also look better if I start the structure with 2B pencil, erase construction and unneeded lines and finish the drawing with 4B pencil.

I'm sure this is asked a million times a day but I just want to know- how does a beginner work towards becoming comfortable?

I'm not asking for being totally full and happy with everything I do- that's unrealistic expectations. But I really want to draw a lot of the time but it feels like a chore and it feels like I can't draw what I want to draw because I don't feel confident and comfortable enough to do what I want to do. I barely draw because of this, and I never get better at something I spend every day thinking about.

I actually finished Edward's Right Side of Brain and didn't have any trouble for the most part (the exercises that gave me trouble, I did them several times till it looked "okay").

However, Edward's drawing method simply only gave me a method to draw something a pencil's length.

My problem is, what if I want to draw the cup bigger? How do I make measurements then?

>> No.2039425

>>2039412
Well I think you still can use the pencil to measure. You should get back to the perspective part of the book and re-read it, and also check out Norling's perspective made easy.
I'm currently reading that, and it really damn helps to understand how perspective works, also combining both of their methods works(at least for me)

I had trouble with Edwards' book too especially at that part, since the author doesn't really go in-depth, not to mention I didn't used a glass at all, just my eyes.

>> No.2039428

>>2039425
Oh, this is strange. I just finished a advance perspective at the CG Academy and go through the finals and mid-term with ease.

I'm confused as to how perspective comes into play when getting proper measurements in trying to figure out correct proportions for organic items, while trying to make the image bigger on paper.

The pencil measurement only works to measure that set length. How would I go about making the image larger on paper without having to sit closer to it?

This isn't answering my question, since it's quiet simple to create someone's face in terms of measurements. You can judge when the nose is too far from the eyes, from the hair line, chin, etc and make corrects there. With that, you can adjust the face how large, small, wide, or tall you want it, and even use the distortion method presented with pic related.

My question is; if I'm sitting very far from my organic object (like a cup or apple), how do I make that image take up my entire page? Edwards' method forces you to sit closer to said object in order for it to look larger, but how do I avoid moving forward while having a larger image?

Im in a simmilar spot than you are. Right now it feels like starting with the basics is a good thing. Train those, while occasionally drawing something out of my comfort zone. Then back to things like perspective, trying to draw figures.

The thing i noticed is, that i get most progress, when i sit down, and not only draw, but think hard about what im actually doing. Think before i place any line, why do i wanna put it there, then imagine it there, then maybe drawing it.

And im struggling with finishing things. Watched some Jake Parker video and he does make a good point. Its better to finish the things you start, than trying to make them perfect from the start. The things you are going to draw perfectly now, will look like crap to you in a few months once you get better. So i guess pick a subject, draw it, finish it, then do it again. Check what mistakes you made, and make a conscious effort to avoid them next time.

I always worry about "for you", I always worry about if this is just "not for me"

I've always loved art and have been very creative, and only recently (past ~2 years) thought heavily about becoming an artist. But I worry it's not for me- and why should I? If it's not for me, I can just move on, right? But I have this burning passion for it, and it hasn't gone away since I initially started my quest to become better at it. I constantly think up things I want to draw and how to draw them- but of course one's mental image is completely different than what you can actually do.

I worry that because I find doing anything that I want to do a chore and procrastinate being a lazy fucker all of the stuff I'm pursuing is just "not for me". But on the other hand, I just don't know if that because it's only been 2 years since I got out of highschool that I'm just a lazy fucker from doing nothing all day still. Even if I find what I really want to do boring and painful to go through because of my inexperience and confusion, should I still keep trying to work towards it, or is it just "not for me"?

Life drawing is a different skill than drawing from a reference picture. You see it in 3d and can get infinite different points of view to draw from. It is also harder to find the 'outline' of what youre drawing, but easier to find the depth.

I don't know what you were expecting though, figure drawing sessions are where you sit and draw what is on display for a few hours. They aren't classes. If they were classes they would be called classes.

You just don't do it enough. Do more and more of those until they become second nature. The main problem is that you spend a lot of time, thought and energy on it, that you are already tired when it comes to finishing it. What you just did should be the quickest part. Also it helps not to use black for something that just blocks the major shapes. Save 100% black lines for the finished peice.

i need help with my drawing technique. it's nonexistent. i've been studying and sketching and shit for a while and i feel that while my perceptiveness and sense of proportion and negative shapes and whatnot has improved, my technique hasn't. I feel like I'm never actually thinking about the line I'm putting down in terms of anything other than its relation to the other lines, and as such the lines themselves are flat and devoid of expression and depth and I want to change that.

I don't know if I've just been going about it wrong (assumedly so) but I never know how to approach a drawing. I realize this is to be expected when starting out, but if I seriously don't have a reference right in front of me I'm just clueless. and even then I'm kind of clueless. here's a quick study I attempted. my sense of lighting is pitiful too.

tl;dr basically how do you render something on paper using lines, step by step. can anyone describe how exactly they approach it and what they think of during each step? anyone help pls

Don't do that fast, your skills can't handle that fast gesture drawings. Take a break and analyse what a human actually looks like. If you wanna do fast gestures do it with "motion lines" ONLY!
like this picture.

I'm not the same anon, but do you honestly think that head looks properly constructed? Mad props for trying Loomis but I honestly think you should look at something simpler than head construction right now. It looks like you're thinking in 2d and symbols, also your strokes are way too scratchy. But keep at it, the fact that you even opened up Loomis must mean you really want to learn.

Two attributes will let you improve at something. Genuinely being able to enjoy the process of failing and improving, and not being bothered by being shit at first. I envy these people. Considering how bad a lot of beginners do with the loomis potato faces, that's actually pretty good. (for a beginner)

If you think you have an alright understanding of constructing things in 3d then you might want to consider just skipping to Figure Drawing For All Its Worth by Loomis or Michael Hampton's Figure Drawing book.
Proko makes some good videos for figure drawing too.

Though if you don't know it yet, you might want to learn some basic perspective before diving into the figure. Scott Robertson's "How to Draw" is a good in depth guide for perspective.

I practice by reading something or watching a video and then applying it. Right now i jump between Hampton and Villpu. I also practice line accuracy but it gets tiresome after about an hour or more.
I try and get a hang of one small thing at a time, so being able to draw something that looks like a leg is good enough, i can aim for more realism later.
It's really nice when you get a hang of something. This drawing was done without any reference or construction. I've only really practiced arms and legs, so the body and head is pretty basic.

Hello!

I want to start out with drawing and art in general in a couple of days.

I have two questions.

At what level I should post my stuff online?
I don't want to embarrass myself too much, because I am certain I'm not talented nor I can afford fancy tools to work with.

If you post your stuff online, how people can see your stuff?
I'm of the loop with internet stuff to be honest.

Thanks for the answers in advance!

>> No.2042731

a healthy mix of figure drawing and portraiture is probably what you want to do.

As for trad vs digital, I'd personally start with trad, because in my opinion it's easier to learn basics when you're struggling less with our medium. Once you earn a modicum of skill you can start working on using your tablet so you don't have to work with both a massive lack of fundamental knowledge and the use of a more difficult medium at once.

>>2042721
>At what level I should post my stuff online?
As long as you post in the proper environment, any level. These threads are for people who are new.

> If you post your stuff online, how people can see your stuff.

depends largely on where you post it. Here it's anyone who happens to see your post. On sites like deviant art no one will really see it until you start to get popular.

>> No.2042732

>>2042721
If you're new you can just start with paper and pencil and loomis. You don't need fancy tools. As for how good you need to be to post online just make sure to post it in environments appropriate for your skill level. These threads would be a good place to start with that.

>> No.2042736

Sounds good, thanks for the direction!

I was kinda gathering that too, though I do like the ease of use of the medium as far as a supplies standpoint, just using it does take getting use to. I suppose those tablets with the built in screen are easier for that, but that's a lot of money I don't want to spend for a tool on which the craft has not nearly been perfected.

right ones chin looks a bit off, also the cheeks look kinda funky when they are so different
on each side of the face on both of the faces. Don't make them identical but try to keep them looking like they belong to the same face.

I read some hampton and got a little better with 3d shapes. It's so frustrating though, not being gud and seeing gud art. Sometimes I wonder if I'm too naturally inclined toward programming and trying to get gud at art won't be fruitful.

I've worked through Loomis 3 times now. Well half in, that is. It suddenly moves form potato faces to real fucking people.

I also think that even my potato faces look shit.

Is there a more fundamental book? I think I need something to stop my symbol thinking.

Any ideas (besides Drawing with the right side of the brain)?
