There's no specific exercise to stop doing it. It's a confidence thing. You have to know what your lines are doing and where you want 'em to go. Only "exercise" for that is just straight up drawing more. Get crackin'

The sword's pommel is way to small for the size of the blade. With good head looking in the direction that it is, you shouldn't see that much of the left side of his face.

Do you flip canvas bro?

I think your skill level is high enough that a simple flip will allow you to see many glaring issues.

Lots of depth issues. Shield doesn't impact the ground. Sword looks out of place because its drawn on a 2d plane and has no perspective. Just skew it and paint over it. That layer style emboss looks terrible on it

don't forget us when you make it :^)

I saw this guy play a couple nights ago and the way he moved his horn stuck with me so I wanted to capture it. Initially I bashed the horns together to try to figure out how to make it look like a lot of movement, but then I was reminded of that Beksinski painting I really like, and so more or less kept it the way it was. Concerning the clouds though, I feel like it'd be great to have many more smaller, far off clouds subtly fading into the horizon. It looks like there is an unreasonably tight clump of clouds around the tower, but then it's clear skies behind them in the distance. Know what I mean?

Symbol drawing and imaginary lines, without any sort of knowledge about perspective and value.
If you are a doodler, and does not want to study art, it is my recommendation that you should leave this board, but if you actually do want to learn and study, go read books written by Andrew Loomis. Study them, brand it in your brain, use them, and draw better forever.
Or, you can just draw like shit for your entire life and delude about how you are "decent" at drawing because your friends think it looks cool. Why? because I honestly find it so fucking horrible, and I would be ashamed to post it on online.
Now, don't take it personally. I'm only trying to help you, by telling you how bad you are at drawing.
Andrew Loomis.
Study, and learn.
Good luck.

Hey guys, Im gonna need your experteez

so this is what I have so far. I feel like the perspective is up to code but whats your perspective on my perspective?

also I admit I really have no idea how to texturize the rest of th facility. background (not going to go into too much detail but this is the basic back bones): this scene takes place inside of a future laboratory, hence the various mutations scattered here and there in stasis containers. in the other room there is a group of scientist experimenting on a mutation. so basically this is a futuristic laboratory environment. My visual library for this kind of set up is pretty blank, I cant seem to come up with anything else to add in terms of wall design/texture.

The problem it's not the door size, reducing it would just turn it into a hobbit's hole, confirming the manletism of your scientists.

Or you redraw their torsos (we should be seeing ass and a bit of his leg, based on the window height) or you could expand the vertical lines down, making the bottom wall taller (remember to adjust the door and furniture) fixing the height problem.

what if women's vaginas closed when they weren't aroused like tight as a drum no opening them for anything but when they were aroused they opened into a gigantic hole.

And women took pills for keeping their vagina open like men do for erections.

And if your vagina was open for more than 4 hours you should see a doctor

And for size comparison your dick in an open vagina like this would be a straw in a jumbo sized Mcdonalds soda cup

And yeah, the saturation looks good. I was trying to keep it as neutral and grey as possible for a challenge rather than go the obvious route of warming up some areas, but then people say it is muddy and I do think your version looks good, so maybe I am just trying to be different for nothing.

Both have an extremely unclear value statement, I think that's the biggest issue.

>> No.2039485

>>2039478
Hmm, is it that unclear? It's a low key image without a lot of contrast, so the value setup is very intentional like that. One thing Mullins discussed quite a bit was about breaking the "rules" you learn in Lighting 101 or whatever that says you need to separate your lights and darks a ton. He argued you can use "wrong" values and so long as the drawing aspect is there it will still read.

>> No.2039497

>>2039485

Was that something he said in the talk you saw recently or are you referring to his old gnomon masterclass? Because he says the exact same thing in the latter and it's the reason why I eventually started throwing everything I learned on /ic/ out the window lol. And I think it's extremely valuable to experiment and fail, but unkowingly I've been doing that for a long ass time, even way before hearing Mullins mention that.

Anyway yeah I think it's somewhat unclear but at the same time you manage to solve a lot of the issues that arise from that, imo. Then I'm somewhat hesitant to insist because I'm just a guy who loves making an overly bold value statement. That's clearly not your intention in this piece so It's hard to say where suboptimal painting ends and a simple difference in taste begins. Nomsayin?

Hang on let me give it a try just for the sake of it.

>> No.2039521

>>2039497
Well it's something he said in the Gnomon vid but also he reiterated it in the talk this weekend, and expanded on stuff a bit more. It was a really interesting talk actually, a lot was the same as previous stuff he's said but there was some new stuff as well, and I get the impression his point of view on certain things is shifting a bit. But yeah I know what you mean about where does the line between unclear painting and taste lie? I want my image to work, but I also don't want to follow all the "rules" of things. And when I follow my own tastes, people often say my images are boring and stuff. So I dunno. Am I not being harsh enough on my tastes with whether I truly like stuff or not, or is it just I have tastes that bore others?

You know, I get what you were trying to achieve and it does look as intended on the thumb.
It's just that at places you can see the gray brushstrokes and that makes it look kind of muddy. You can use color in the shadows, make them a very dark value of purple/blue/green or something, not black and just a bit of warm colors in the light and in that way you can achieve this low-contrast kind of dark dusty look you're going for.
It's just that in most such pieces the use of color is like an optical illusion, the colors are relative to each other.
I think you're almost there though and it'd be nice if you continued in that direction.
I mean, yeah, break the rules.

Honestly, just move onto the values. Blocking in with values and shapes makes more complex construction a lot easier in painting. Remember, you're painting, not drawing. 1. You're right about the knife. the fortunate part is that it's black, so I can always add onto it later.

2. Not only are they low, but the arms are way too long. Something I realized the next morning after staying up super late to draw it lol. Where I muffed it here was drawing the front shoulder first. I wanted it to be relaxed so it's low, but then his other arm is out stretched and by then it was too late. I dun goofed it.

3. The shadow placement was actually on purpose. I wanted to shade the middle of them and the foreground more to draw emphasis towards the kiss, and their bodies embracing each other, leaving all the negative stuff hidden sort of in the back to be discovered. As for the source of light? They are on another planet. Call it sci-fi physics. I dunno. Shut up, nerd.

works very well in terms of focalpoint. you create nice contrast arou the face and connect the bottom with the two little purple badges. then despite the bottom having a ton purple it's not dominant because you ease into it with a smooth gradient so the eye really shoots to the face, and then travels down the arm and drops easily into the flowers. where it can rest.

what i think you could do better:
-close the composition in a circular pattern (no idea how you would do that here)
- create more of a sense of direction towards the left so the figures pose has more narrative depth.
- some desaturated tones/colors so you make use of a broader spectrum (might just be personal taste though)

Pretty decent start, but you should probably start with doing the landscapes in black and white and paint with value only and then move onto coloring it. Since your biggest problem seems to be controlling values.
Try to put in as little of pure white as possible even snow isn't pure white most of the time even tough it looks like it. Watch couple really early FZD videos like episodes 1-5 since even tough he is design oriented in the early
videos he talks about painting with value a lot along with composition.

I like it. Try to be more confident with your lines, they're getting a little hairy.

I've seen you post this now for a couple of months and the face and pose has always bothered me. This is my how i feel it would look better. Hope you finish it one day.

Okay I guess I'm looking for a general feedback on these character designs. Any critique, be it for (the lack of) skill or style, is much appreciated.
thanks
