Did this around a year ago when I was still in high school and end up giving it away to a friend of mine, although I'm not really proud of that work, it really makes me understand the structures of face a lot more.

I guess I've improved my linework and understanding of human body by quite a bit since then. Colour's another story though but I plan to study em with photoshop once I got my tablet later.

>>2021240
What are the dates? I see your finished pieces floating around, do you do practice sketches? Maybe focus on quantity over quality for a bit.

>>2021353
Looks like you got more edgy, do you have anymore completed works? Your 2015 looks like a quick sketch so it's hard to baseline your progress.

>>2021441
You should practice faces more the gap in quality brings down your pieces.

>>2021467
Nice job! But the lion in the right looks kinda flat. It's hard to see the form of its face. It's like she had a stroke or is made of soup.

>>2021624
I can't tell what dates you are progressing from, but your faces have a nice style now. If you don't already do it, you should work on some full body / figure stuff.

>>2021802
You don't have to finish anything if you don't want to, it's just nice to baseline your progress with finished pieces. Just keep practicing. One day you will feel the urge to complete a piece.

You can pick up a skull replica from ebay for pretty cheap, sketching it will make you feel so badass, too. I need to do the same.

You say you've gone nowhere but you are definitely improving. Pictures like the girls with the glasses and the lady with her back facing the audience show that you are improving when it comes to faces.

I wouldn't say you've gone nowhere... however, I feel that while you newer pieces may be more accurate... your older pictures have a certain complex quality to them that the new pictures lack...

Maybe you should redo some of you old drawings for that feel.

Thanks mates. It's really nice to know that i'm doing things atleast partially right.

I didn't use any books but i've spent a decent amount of time watching videos and other peoples art. I would say scott robertsons and Maciej Kuciaras youtube channel has some great stuff as well as some of the level up series guests are good.

Looking at better artists art has been very helpful to me as they usually have solved most of the problems you might have in your own art and if you look hard enough and try to break down their process there is most likely stuff you can extract and apply to your own process.

Learning 3D softwares taught me a lot about rendering. Stuff like bounce light, reflections, shadows and sub surface scattering and lighting in general were things that I had very little understanding of before and i got a lot more confident in how to use them after doing 3D for a while.

I used to do a lot of photostudies before (1,5 hours every day), more than necessary probably because at a certain point i kinda stopped knowing what to look for so i just ended up learning how to use the photoshop tools better instead of learning how to make my paintings from imagination look better. So nowadays i barely do any photostudies besides for anatomy. Most of my studying is just looking at other better artists art and painting things that i have poor understanding of and then when i fail i look up references and try again.

Most of my progress have not come from just spending many hours painting. those paintings in 2014/2015 are like 1/6th of all the stuff i've made during that time period. So most of the important things I've learned have come from studying without actually painting. I would say smart practice is way better than a lot of mindless practice. Preferably you want to do a lot of smart practice but that's easier said than done.

uhhh really sorry i forgot i posted in this thread. well i promised myself about a year ago that i would draw everyday, and i've managed to keep that promise (more or less) i go to uni in the day, but once i'm done i stay awake until unreasonable hours, i do about 5-10 hours a week of figure drawing, with anything i can find and anywhere i can, and about the same amount of time of colour and value studies. i've been doing this kind of thing for the past 6 months, before that i was dumb af and looked up to noah bradley. don't discourage yourself and don't give yourself lame excuses.

Nice improvement. With the catgirl, the lineart needs to be smoother and more consistent and, in general, it doesn't look like you used any sort of ref for the anatomy (except for the stomach, which looks glaringly good compared to everything else).
