He targeted a specific niche, being 13 year olds and under. There's a lot of people that age on deviantart so he's one of the more popular members (in terms of pageviews). However this is a target demo that has no disposable income of their own so it was dumb to market to them.

Patreon always seems very iffy to me. People who you think are popular enough to make tons of money end up making nothing a lot of the time. When it comes to people who aren't doing porn, unless they're very talented and offering tutorials, they don't seem to make much at all. When it comes to porn artists, the especially hard working ones are able to make good money on it but you'll see people you thought were popular making chump change.

The idea that if you're remotely well known you can go on patreon and make a living is a myth. You have to be good apart from just appealing to the masses with cutesy fanart shit and you have to offer enticing backer rewards.

I was sort of considering patreon for a little bit but then I realized I make 3-3.5k a month on commissions and thats basically how much incase makes and I'm no where as good as him and I don't work as much either.
Honestly patreon seems like a bit of a appealing gimmick but establishing yourself with commissions (talking about porn here) is more reliable money.

>The idea that if you're remotely well known you can go on patreon and make a living is a myth
No body but you really believes that.

It's to aid, not to completely live off. Majority of people who use Patreon take commissions, as Patreon is just side/"bonus" money.
>but establishing yourself with commissions (talking about porn here) is more reliable money
...And you've confirmed that you really don't know what you are talking about.

>> No.2017513

The Smart Dudes on /ic/ aren't going to believe that but you haven't seen the dozens of no-name artists on friendaffinity setting up a patreon with stretch goals over 2k a month. As far as I know successful patreon artists like incase and doxy don't take commissions. Though doxy does run a paysite for the gay stuff.
Yeah I could be wrong, but can you elaborate why I don't know what I'm talking about by saying commissions are more reliable money? I feel like thats much more reliable than getting snake niggered by people donating and immediately withdrawing their pledge to get access to your stuff.

>> No.2017523

>>2017513
>but can you elaborate why I don't know what I'm talking about by saying commissions are more reliable money?
It was in regards to the fact that you think people mainly use/have the concept of mentality that Patreon is for living off of, and not just side money.

Obviously there are people who can live off their Patreon money alone, but the majority of people do take commissions despite owning a Patreon, whether it's a main source of income or a side (as like you've previously mentioned, not everyone needs to take commissions.)
>and immediately withdrawing their pledge to get access to your stuff.

No, it can be for anything but you do actually have to offer content beyond pretty pictures. 10 minutes reading sakis patreon milestone list followed by watching a torrented tutorial and it's obvious how she's pulling 40k a month.

On the other hand, if you look at Kron's patreon milestone list, he has 3 completed tiers, 2 of which are "I will make comics" and "I will hire a professional writer for my comics". So far, he has posted 1 or 2 WIP pages of his "comic" and some character designs and that's it. People still support him despite offering absolutely nothing of value to those people other than promises.

Sure, Sakimichan is going the extra mile for her patrons and it clearly pays off for her, but you absolutely don't have to build your patreon around rewards to be successful.

Are you me ? This is my exact plan for when I get a bit better/have more free time. And the porn drawings will still be good practice, it's just that I'll find them completely gross.

My only issue is that most furry artists (the ones I've heard of, at least) have a personality, cause drama. I'm not sure you can pass as a furry by just posting some art and otherwise being pretty normal. Or if you do, you might not get noticed anyway.

That's more than the entire marvel or dc franchise, so I can believe that he's able to make a living off of a copy.

how can anyone be this entitled? Like hes talking like his fans owe him money or something?

But it's good to see that he's realizing his trash art and attitude isn't going to make him any real money.

Is there a case of good dA artists that shit on him? Like ones that have been drawing lesser years than him/didn't go to art school(or would that hurt their reputation)

lot's of people on /ic/ are better than him. If you identify yourself with the guys from the beginner thread who are just starting out with art, then sure, I guess "most" of /ic/ is worse though. I don't really count people like you though, you are just a noob and that's fine everyone has to start somewhere. Preston has been doing this for a decade or more and you have been drawing for what, a year or two?

I could be that dude in like 6 months from now. Dobson has to be nearly worthless as an artist to stay at his level of skill for so long.

I just need to practice my lineweights, anatomy, lighting and perspective some more to completely destroy him.

Holy fuck. I could do this. I can paint somewhat like this, why am I not doing this shit right now? I mean, it's just horrible artwork, etc, but holy shit, if I get 1/20 of that, I'd be fine.

I used to do fanart when I was a teenager, but I dropped to try and draw my own things. I closed my dA, everything and now I'm just experimenting with stuff. I wanted to get back with a bang and actually become famous, what is the best way to build a fanbase of my own? Where do these people post their work? I'm like 10 years late on this.

I really can, maybe not with that ease, but it's doable. I don't know if I'm willing to spend my life drawing fanart, but I'm considering now. I never thought it would bring any money anyway, aren't there copyright problems with those guys?

Dude, there are thousands of people doing similar or better level fanart who don't get paid 1/100 of what Sakimichan get.
The reason why she earns that much is that she's been at it since forever, and by forever I mean that she basically IS deviantart. Everyone already knew who she was before she started this patreon stuff because she actually got aboard the "animu-realism fanart" train when it was just starting.
Not even ruanjia or whoever would get that much money if they started a patreon doing that stuff right now. Unless they got a time machine, and a sex-change operation.

No. That little blue bear shit makes me want to claw my eyes out and incinerate them. His art style is despicable, his comics are despicable, I hate everything about him and I can think of no fate for him that is too terrible.

>> No.2028379

>>2025136
You figured wrong then.

If you want exposure you need to be on deviant art instead of /ic/
You will also need to find a style that lets you produce art work extremely fast then start cranking out that portfolio, occasionally stopping to produce something from a game or anime which has just come out.

Essentially the more shit you have in circulation the easier it is for people to hear about you.

This is Dobson's old classmate imdb.com/name/nm2314791/
I think Dobson is interesting because he's halfway between Chris Chan and any of us, and you can see inside his depressing thought process.
Lessons learned from Dobson:
>don't invest in art education if you can't be arsed doing any work
>Qualified artist =/= good artist
>come to /ic/ and learn to deal with crit
>pageviews=/=money
>If you don't make an effort to study you won't get better, even after 10 years
>people will notice if you half-ass anything

>The reason why she earns that much is that she's been at it since forever,

Kronprinz has been around the fanart scene for barely 3-4 years and is the second highest paid fanartist on patreon. I remember him from Cghub like 2 or so years ago, that's when he first started gaining real exposure. 2 years ago.
