He targeted a specific niche, being 13 year olds and under. There's a lot of people that age on deviantart so he's one of the more popular members (in terms of pageviews). However this is a target demo that has no disposable income of their own so it was dumb to market to them.

Patreon always seems very iffy to me. People who you think are popular enough to make tons of money end up making nothing a lot of the time. When it comes to people who aren't doing porn, unless they're very talented and offering tutorials, they don't seem to make much at all. When it comes to porn artists, the especially hard working ones are able to make good money on it but you'll see people you thought were popular making chump change.

The idea that if you're remotely well known you can go on patreon and make a living is a myth. You have to be good apart from just appealing to the masses with cutesy fanart shit and you have to offer enticing backer rewards.

I was sort of considering patreon for a little bit but then I realized I make 3-3.5k a month on commissions and thats basically how much incase makes and I'm no where as good as him and I don't work as much either.
Honestly patreon seems like a bit of a appealing gimmick but establishing yourself with commissions (talking about porn here) is more reliable money.

It was in regards to the fact that you think people mainly use/have the concept of mentality that Patreon is for living off of, and not just side money.

Obviously there are people who can live off their Patreon money alone, but the majority of people do take commissions despite owning a Patreon, whether it's a main source of income or a side (as like you've previously mentioned, not everyone needs to take commissions.)

Are you me ? This is my exact plan for when I get a bit better/have more free time. And the porn drawings will still be good practice, it's just that I'll find them completely gross.

My only issue is that most furry artists (the ones I've heard of, at least) have a personality, cause drama. I'm not sure you can pass as a furry by just posting some art and otherwise being pretty normal. Or if you do, you might not get noticed anyway.

I used to do fanart when I was a teenager, but I dropped to try and draw my own things. I closed my dA, everything and now I'm just experimenting with stuff. The reason why she earns that much is that she's been at it since forever, and by forever I mean that she basically IS deviantart. Everyone already knew who she was before she started this patreon stuff because she actually got aboard the "animu-realism fanart" train when it was just starting.

You will also need to find a style that lets you produce art work extremely fast then start cranking out that portfolio, occasionally stopping to produce something from a game or anime which has just come out.

Kronprinz has been around the fanart scene for barely 3-4 years and is the second highest paid fanartist on patreon. I remember him from Cghub like 2 or so years ago, that's when he first started gaining real exposure. 2 years ago.
