I only want to do one for my first my month because of autism. Help me /ic/? The most important thing for any beginner artist is getting a feeling for the space the things you are drawing occupy. I'd say you should do perspective drawing and figuredrawing in tandem for a bit. Don't let drawing turn into a chore though. If you feel like drawing something, do it. Just remember to think about what you are doing, and try to spot and correct mistakes.

>>2017181
ou might be able to get proportions to look okay, but that by itself won't make it appealing. Also, don't bother spending 5 hours on a line drawing for now. You'll benefit much more from doing a bunch of 20 minute drawings of the same object from different perspectives.

Are you having trouble making the titlted plane? Or are you just having trouble following the instructions after doing so? They're pretty clear. I've seen some people online have trouble making the tilted plane, but everything after that is pretty clear.

>> No.2017941

>>2016921

Not a great drawer or anything, but if I were you id just study from a couple of books (like loomis) alongside drawing from references in whatever way I like. The former will help your fundamentals, the latter probably won't hurt because you'll be building your muscle memory and intuition for things. But alone, the latter may never bring you up to the next level. It seems like a lot of people who just dive straight into doing references all day hit a wall or never get past a certain point, while the ones who study from all the books and do all the exercises eventually end up getting pretty good.

>> No.2017945

>>2017195

You're doing a wonky 3 point perspective which is unnecessary. Your verticals don't need to connect to a vanishing point like that. The way they make the tilted plane in the book is by making their mirrored plane first, and then creating two squares coming off of it and connecting the dots. I can probably do a photoshop thing in a second illustrating.

I'm shit with photoshop, just draw, so forgive me if this looks like crap, but I hope it illustrates what I mean. The points aren't even meeting the lines that well, but you see how I'm still just using two point perspective to make the plane? Those verticals are just a product of connecting the dots on two planes coming off of the mirror plane. I tried to crudely make sure you know which one is the mirrored plane by scribbling on it.

For those of you who use Paint Tool SAI, how the fuck do you make trees? I've went through several brushes and they all look nice and all, but they don't appear to be actual trees.

Pic related for example.

I blurred one side to try and see if that would help it all blend together better, but the edges are still lifeless as you see no actual leaves and the non-blurred side is just too specific of a type of painting devoid of what else I want to do with it.

Grabbed this off google http://fc05.deviantart.net/fs70/f/2014/109/9/b/sai_leaf_and_bark_brushes_by_rainbowsprinkles12-d7f67hn.png, I see shit like this all the time. I don't see how to do it even though I've looked at countless brush settings and stroke techniques, I just can't replicated it using the tools on SAI compared to actual painting techniques on a canvas.

Sometimes I can get them to look half ass right but it ends up just looking light a cloud or fog too much as opposed to a tree.

Not bad for a second attempt. I suggest trying to be aware of the ugly overlaps that happen when you do transparent strokes over each other. They looks bad and create muddy values and forms. NEVER shade with black EVER. that is going to give you so many problems. don't be afraid to mix colours together, find different hues of colours, that will make your paintings less dull. but be aware that adding too much white also can be difficult when mixing the colours.
another thing, fully cover the whole canvas/board in solid colour before you start, white is terrible to work on + it will give you a nice yet very slightly visible undertone.

>>2020478
1. draw from real life first, not photo ref. when you draw from real life, you can walk around the object and see it as it is in space. draw self portraits from the mirror if you can't find someone to pose, even then you can turn your head and touch your own face to feel the shapes and forms.

Face proportions are way off.
The average width of the nose is one eye, and the average width of the mouth is two eyes, look at reference then measure with your mind.
Also don't outline, do a light sketch then place your values.

COLORS! How do they work? :(

When I do paintings in greyscale, whether from reference or not, they turn out pretty swell. I've been focusing on values a lot and it's really improved my work. However, when I try to do the same thing but I start with colors, it all goes to shit.

Blocking in the shapes/comp with color works out fine most of the time, but as soon as I start blending/refining/rendering, I lose values/shapes and the colors become muddy and ugly. Any tips for working with color?

>> No.2021648

>>2021638
Follow these two simple rules (on top of studies, not as a base:
>Shadows:
Go counter-clockwise on the color wheel, if you have a very light yellow-orange as your base then you'll want to make the lightest shadows an orange-red, and the darkest an almost magenta color.
>Highlights:
Same as shadows but work clockwise.

Keep the saturation, but lower the brightness as you get to the darkest shadows.

You should keep the background consistent with your ref - it's a lot easier to judge colors and values that way.

Also, that photo is tricky in terms of color, as a lot of the color shifts are subtle and not necessarily very intuitive. The 80's polaroid filter doesn't help.

Read about color and light, then go out and paint a ton of still lifes. That will teach you the most, and you can then use photos to further your studies.

Color and Light by James Gurney
>It's not a guide for using color picking by any means, but it will help you to understand various lighting effects. Knowing what color to use is simply a matter of learning what light does in various scenarios. I'd also search for posts on color on his blog, as a lot of the content in his book is on there as well.

Thanks, I'll keep that in mind.

When I paint in color, I like to mix on the canvas, is this bad? I'm working digitally, but I like to start with a dark silhouette, and just start adding midtones and highlights until i like something and go from there. Sometimes I go overboard and the colors start getting muddy and stuff. Should I colorpick from the canvas less? or at all?

>> No.2022036

I keep hearing 'paint from dark to light,' is that purely for traditional media because of how physical paint works?

Every single process/tutorial video I see from well renowned digital artists, they almost all start from midtones. What am I missing? THanks

already i fucked around with the face contruction even more. the eyes were both too high, her right eye needed to come in more, and the right eye needed to be a bit bigger.

so i have a couple questions.

ive been making solid progress on portraiture and this will be my first painting of a portrait. i started doing all kinds of measurements and calculations to make it as accurate as possible eventually getting to the point where if i was drawing with pencil and paper i could just guess and get pretty close. i did the same with this, just trying to come as close as possible, checking later with fresher eyes, adjusting, repeat. it seems like portraits are just fucking complicated. does it ever get to the point where you can just draw an outline pretty fucking perfect first try?

Thing is, paralel things have the same focal points, if something is not paralel to anything in the room, it means its focus point or whatever its called is just moved on the horizon line.

I have never draw till Jan 1st this year. New years resolution. :) I been writing erotic / hentai since 2004. I had tried to find artist who might draw things for me, but most charge a lot or where never able to deliver.

So I took up drawing for the 1st time. I've been working on Anatomy ( Male / Female ) I been drawing with various pencils / on a drawing table. I bought myself a small Wacom 4 today. I am having some issues while using Krita paint program. ( I'm not sure if its the program or the tablet.

Attached photo ( drawing lines sometimes pauses for no reason. I don't list up the digitizer. And I can't seem to see any weight in lines when I press down or lift-up it stays the same.

As for my pencil artwork, I like a scanner to show my works. I'm obviously new as I only started drawing this year. But will ask another time. I just want to know how can I make my lines smoother ( I know some programs allow smoothing of lines. And if I can prevent my lines from cutting off for no reason, assuming its related to the tablet and not krita. Thank you!
