I'd advise against it. You should shield yourself from these baleful proportions and let your eyes only see bodies as perfectly proportioned as possible. Otherwise you'll end up doing sketches that look like these monstrosities and people will naturally feel they are wrong (like it happened with the OP) even if they aren't. It's just like if you drew girls who looked like Hiroshima survivors. Just because somewhere some people exist that met such criteria, it doesn't mean you should draw them like that.

My bad then. The thin frame, big head and quality of the lines made me think you were Mikufag.

To elaborate on what I mentioned earlier, the clavicles are strange because you aren't showing the handle-bar like form that they take, and the gap between clavicular heads is too large.

The arm looks too long partially from the pubic bone being raised, and a lot from the belly button being raised and the shoulders being narrowed.

For the waist you need to emphasize the pinch on one end and the stretch on the other. Your markings for the anterior superior illiac spine are misplaced, and it looks like you arbitrarily trimmed out a lot of tissue in an effort to make the figure skinnier, but you didn't fully take into account the structure of the pelvis. As a form it's now lopsided and skewed.

What he said >>1993481. Copying Bargue plates is a great way to start building your observational skill. Be sure to follow the technique outlined in the Bargue and Gerome Drawing Course.

The next step is to get a ton of experience drawing from life. Be sure to practice constructing your forms while you're at it. Once you know how forms work in real life, and how to construct complex forms from basic ones, you'll be able to easily interpret reference photos both in terms of basic shapes and basic forms. You'll of course need to understand at least the basics of perspective to do all of this well.

Also, the way the mermaid is positioned makes you want to look what she is looking at, which should be close to the center, or where you want people to look at. The bottom left corner is normally not the most appropriate place to make people look in a composition.

I liked some of the earlier versions to be honest. Right now it feels boring and the black smoke cloud behind her seems too conveniently placed and artificial. The huge dead space behind her is also boring and feels unnecessary.

I wanted to add more interest to the image and make the space behind her lead into her. So I made the smoke be a couple big billows that cut across the composition diagonally. This leads into her and also contrasts the angle of her body and the flagpole. I also added more flags in the distance to echo the rhythms in the image and help force the eye to the main figure while filling the image out more so it doesn't feel as empty. I still felt hte image was lacking, and thought that a bit of interesting lighting might help. So I threw in a strong warm light at a low angle--maybe a sunrise (which seems to fit the theme of the image)--and it lets us add in some strong colour on the focal point and break the shape up a bit, as well as get the interesting effect of light passing through fabric and lighting it up with some nice SSS. The ground was too uniform too, so I made it slant slightly and added a bit more variety in the texture and the grasses sticking up.

Now keep in mind that I made a ton of changes and may have strayed form what you are going for. I just feel your image is a bit lackign and needs some changes to really make it powerful, so you need to decide yourself what changes best suit what you want. Look at the reasoning behind my changes as much as the chnages themselves Isuppose. Hope this helps a bit.

The smoke billows you added divide the space in even bands, gives a patterning effect, which flattens the picture plane. For the original artist, I suggest thinking about where the smoke is, whether it's on the ground right behind her or in the distance and accounting for that with some kind of atmospheric perspective or gaps on the smoke that imply that it's billowing from a location nearer the figure.
I feel the additional flags does the opposite of leading the eye to the figure. They distract and look out of place hovering (visually) inches above the ground. A light mass in front of a dark field is enough to draw the eye, especially holding a red banner, which is echoed in her hair color. To combat the emptiness, I would add some tertiary element like birds might do the trick. I think we all want to see this piece succeed because of it's striking simplicity and I think that's worth holding on to.
I think the lighting changes are a good addition, as is the sloping ground, with the exception of the photoshop brush.
A final thing to consider may be the near tangent between the banner and the top of her head. It's not immediately clear where in space the banner is whether it's above, behind, or in front of her head. I think some overlap would help clear that up.
I'm not trying to argue with the person who did the paintover, I think you picked out a lot of the problems with the picture, I just don't agree with your solutions. Hope this is somewhat helpful!

Cool, so the issues I see are as follows:
-you image is not warm enough (flames provide very warm light)
-you should include the light sources in your image so it is clear how things are being lit
-you are way too detail focused and aren't thinking big picture enough

I think all the details and the transparent stroeks are ruining the image. I put a filter over your image to simplify it and glazed a bit with a soft light layer for that warmth. From there it is easy to add some small details and proceed. You can see how little information is needed though for a clear read on the image.

Your line-work is improving but your figures are lacking interior forms and they're only "2.5D". They almost look like they're engravings without a backside to them. They can't rotate. You'd be able to improve a lot if you 1. make sure all of your feet are properly grounded in perspective and 2. you simplify the limbs further till they're almost perfectly cubic (while focusing on the joints specifically)

First of all thank you so much, both of you for your replies. I could not have asked more from strangers on the internet. You have my deepest thanks.

Ok so something both mention is the smoke. What I was actually going for were dense dark clouds but the diagonal streaks also look like clouds and I really like what it does to the image.

The second poster said it seems to flatten the image but I think that might be because they stay or or less the same length so I think I'll make it smaller as it meets the horizon. I see the need for adding more and although I'm not sure about the flags I'll definitly try to think of something.

About it not being clear where the flag is, I had that feeling as well and the overlap was agreat suggestion!

Stuff like the light and the ground I was already planning on adjusting but thank you for taking the time to illustrate that! Maybe I should have mentioned it's still WIP

Many thanks once again! Will post results later today or tomorrow

wut. It's much easier to tell when faces are even a little bit off because we're hard-wired to recognize them, and we see them every day. You can get away with a lot more imperfections drawing a ribcage.

You know what would be good evidence that you can draw faces? a well-drawn face. Sadly you've never created one.

figures are stiff and unnatural. you're paying attention to important things, like head/neck/shoulders, but it what about clavicles or sternomastoid? the figures also look pretty flat, especially the one in back, due to both the shading and the pose (straight on, arms not projecting into space, mugshot angle). the faces are also too big for the heads. where are the ears? even if you aren't drawing them, you need to know where the are so you know where the jaw slopes up, where the sternomastoid connects, etc. first thing to do though is get some poses that actually convey emotion or personality.

Depends on the person and gender. It's usually fairly rounded though, especially near the ass where there is more muscle and fat. As you approach the knees you get less fat and the shape becomes more determined by the tendons so it takes on a more flat squarish form. Also keep in mind that in the example you posted their thighs are being distorted in shape since they are being pressed against a bar, so the shape does appear flatter than if they were standing.

I come from industrial design so drawing and defining forms with value is weird as fuck. the slightest hue difference can result in an entirely differently shaped face for example

Watch your proportions, the legs are a bit short. Pelvis is okay, but you should grab some reference. Peck's book helped me a lot with the pelvis, and he has it shown from tons of angles. The scapulas are not shown clearly either, I think the messy linework is causing some problems. Maybe just lower the opacity of everything and go over in a clean more accurate set of lines.
