Anime/Manga/Cartooning Thread

"To any man who has slaved to acquire skill in his art, it is most irritating to have his ability referred to as a gift. Perhaps there is one genius in a hundred years or more who can achieve perfection by divine inspiration. I have never met such a man, and I do not know any successful artist who did not get there by the sweat of his brow."

Previous Thread: >>1980948

A general message to aspiring artists: "Lack of knowledge can be greater torture than the effort of acquiring it. When all is said and done, nature is your best instructor."

Submit your drawings, receive feedback or critique others! Share your knowledge and remember to thank those who've critiqued or red-lined your drawings. Most importantly, have fun.

This thread is meant for artists who might want to try to make stylized work in-between their studies. It is strongly recommended that you use this thread in conjunction with learning the elements and fundamentals of art. You can also discuss the visual elements of various professional artists as well if you keep it relatively articulate and civil.

>a good hand reference
here in the twenty first century we have a thing called the google or "goo gull" phonetically, try the following hyperlink in the navigation bar in your web browser: http://www.google.com

I know the link seems really long, so an easier way of getting there might be to go to http://www.yahoo.com and searching google in their search bar and then clicking on the first link you find there. Or you can ctrl paste (that stands for control, it is a button hidden on your keyboard) and that involves highlighting the link with your mouse cursor (a mouse cursor is the little arrow you use to manipulate your graphical operating system) holding control and LEFT clicking the highlighted link, go down the listed items until you find "copy," left click that and then hover your cursor over the navigational bar in your web browser, hold control, left click, follow the list down to paste, left click and then press enter.

hope I helped ;)

The only thing that seems strange is that the big monster appears to be floating. Its two front legs might be too distant from the figures in the foreground (like right now they are kind at a 180° spread, when a "tripod monster" normally has each of its legs at a 120° interval) or maybe it's the rear leg which is out of place? Or maybe it's just me and it will look ok once you render the floor.
The gesture flows very nicely anyways.

Yes, yes it is. You either do great art and great story or you do great story and pay someone who can do great art or you do great art and pay someone to do a great story. your style isnt really fit for a comic. first of all, its very detailed and defined. Its good for stylized paints, but to recreate it over and over is painstaking.

thats not the main reason though. Although many comics range from style to style, usually they would either be hyper realistic, or cartoony. Those two ranges of styles are what give emotion, which is the most important part of comics and their humor/story. Your style doesnt depict emotion very well and is somewhat grungy too. Its hard to see what he's trying to convey as emotion in general, because its semi cartoony and semi realistic. I wouldn't.

I made a quick recreation. (sorry for the eyesore) Now, you really have to study emotion and grasp what actually feels like "anger" or "contempt". The fact of the matter is, even though you might consider a lot of what Im saying "style", comical expression still uses the general rules of human nature. Since yours is semi-realistic, it still applies. The chin does not change its angle for the sake of contempt. in fact, thats almost physically impossible. the back of your neck is brick like. your eyebrows are too above your eyes. You dont have many wrinkles despite this being a relatively old looking man. Or, it is, because your bone structure is more defined than your wrinkles. Again, even though its a style, you can't just ignore parts of the head or body. Define your lips, they take a big part in grimaces, smiles and such. Yours has no color, minimal shading, no shine, and just looks bland. Finally, your eyes are seriously bugging me. They're really big and its hard to tell what they show. The emotion range of surprise and anger all have smaller pupils surrounding the whites. In your case, it might not be surprise, more or less general "mr. pissed off". the pupils are still way too big, or at least in comparison to your eye whites. You also need to define his eyelids, it gives off much more of a point to show emotions. Theres light values everywhere and you cant use that to show emotion, either. Its very confusing, and its not composed well for comics in general. You neeeed to study expression. You can keep this style and still give off better emotion. This is all experience, and reference.

So what you're saying here is that you used color terminology to refer to values, and aren't at fault for people not understanding you, and generally refusing to admit any sort of fault. For someone calling someone else out on not taking critique well, you aren't doing much better.

Looks bretty good, but there a couple small changes that you could make that would help a lot. First, the perspective on the lampshade is off (you need to practice drawing ellipses more) and there are some structure issues with your character, most notably with the neck (too short). The line work on him also looks patchy and inconsistent but the other two things I mentioned are the most obvious errors.

Don't mean to cut you down though, this is a nice piece. I'd say the best part is the furniture, it's clean, solid and the line-work is appealing too

Why do most good, experienced manga, animators or stylized artists seem to suffer from sameface syndrome? I think I'm going down that road and I would at least learn how to make them more unique, while still mantaining a stylized trait. Are there tricks to make faces more expressive other than showing them through the eyes?

>> No.1985818

>>1985785
my guess is that most of the time, anime/manga faces are so stylized that to make a noticeable difference you either have to:
1. extremely deform the face skeleton
2. have entirely different style for each character
but many artists tries hard to avoid it after sailor moon critiques
usually ending up with good looking MC, and ugly fucking side characters with deformed base skeleton to make the difference
