I think I found a few differences.

The left eye is larger and off center
The mouth in the original slopes a bit more and is much smaller.
The left eyebrow is extended too far.
The nose is too big (I'd just leave it as is)
The highlights are not bright enough, especially his left cheek, the one on your right
The shadows are inconsistent

I'd say its going along well though. It was hard to find anything tbh. I know how it feels for a portrait to be off even after staring for hours though so I thought I would give you a new set of eyes

does anybody else have the same problem I'm having with cs6? it randomly draws by itself horizontal and vertical lines while I'm drawing, like in the picture, it's really annoying, I already tried updating the drivers, and reinstalling photoshop, I'm pretty sure is not my tablet cause I also use paint tool sai and it works fine.
pardon my ok english.

and you're definitely not accidentally hitting shift?
I've had a similar problem in the past where every 10 or so pen strokes it would disable pressure sensitivity, and then carry on as normal for another 10 or so.

I think it's more likely a tablet driver issue than a photoshop one.

sounds like it's something hitching, make sure your have room in your scratch files and check how much ram and cpu usage is going on. it may well be that some other piece of software is doing something automatically and jamming your shit up.

sai is much lighter than photoshop, which is probably why there's no problem there.

could also be that pesky windows ink/windows pen & touch

i would kill those services if you still have them up. should be a guide on how to do it on the internet somewhere.

your painting skills aren't quite there yet but I'd start working on simplifying concepts a bit.

I know it seems like arcane details make you seem like you know what your doing ( don't look up to who /ic/ looks up to, those guys and girls are hacks), but there's something to be said for purposeful design and writing out your concepts so the image either
A) answers a question for the audience
B) asks a question of the audience
or C) plays on already proven concepts and words in an interesting way i.e wordplay ( tentacle could be ten tackle)

you don't have to start thinking about that yet because I still think your drawing skills aren't quite there, but it's something to keep in mind for the future. Your close to being there and you should be ready.

You should spread his limbs our a bit angle his. The scarf looks good and wavy, the pants are really eh, maybe look at some swim trunk references.

The wooden stick would be buoyant, it would float more horizontally. The angle of the water is really interesting, but a more dynamic pose would have made a great difference.

I'm not sure where the strike is coming from. If it's a downward stab, the action of the figure seems to go against it. If it's an upward strike coming from the left of the attacker like it looks, then it's impossible to cut someone with a big blade such as a katana's while holding the weapon that way from that position (unless you push yourself onto the target using your whole body to sandwich the blade, which is pretty retarded anyways).
Also, I'm not sure what the context is since there's a member of the KKK behind the attacker, but if he is supposed to be a samurai then he probably wouldn't wield his sword with his left hand.

You did well on the t-rex, but the cylinder for the missile is terribly flat. You could definitely show its form better.

It did read that way, the problem is that even with that greenline you can see how the blade is nowhere near the throat of the guy (the blade proper doesn't even face the throat of the victim actually), if it were to cut something, which is unlikely if he's unsheathing the sword from his left side, it would be somewhere near the victim's abdomen, and would certainly not have enough power to do any damage even if it did "hit" there.

The horns aren't that bad, I'd say main issue is where they connect to the head.
Your forms on the face are all over the place though the idea is there.
The hair doesn't seem to follow gravity or the forms of the face, and is rendered generally all over. Think of the light source.
The face is very pale and bright compared to everything else. Even if someone is pale, to shine like that they'd need a light source right at them, which judging from the other parts it isn't.
And the hood is halfassed pretty bad on the left side of the piece, google someone wearing a hooded robe or something, and then think about how it drapes over the forms.

>forms forms forms
>big masses first, values are always most important thing
>reference when you don't know what you're doing
>design clothing around the anatomy (horns) not the other way around

Keep at it anon.

it comes across as silly. people might have been scared killing other people but it wouldn't show in this guys face. this crazy underhand sword technique he's got going on makes it seem like he's done this a lot. even if there was still some fear when he fought people someone that skilled with swords would at least be better at hiding it. he doesn't have to look angry, but at least a look of determination. this is his job. he's good at it, he should be taking it seriously, not apologizing as he kills people.

again this is all opinion. it's just a scene, and it's about conveying emotion and intent not concept so there's no wrong answer really.

You need to simplify your large value groups more. You have a lot of patchy values all over the place, but there's no sense of hierarchy so the overall form doesn't read well. If you focus on defining the egg-like form of the head with your values, and make sure all other details through value work is secondary, then you should have a good read. Similarly, focusing on major planes will help a lot (google an Asaro head for an example).

This is super quick, but I tried to establish some value shapes using a ref from the web. I knocked out all of the detail work, but you can still incorporate them if when zoomed out the big forms still read. You also had a few issues like the mouth being drawn like a near 3/4 view when it should be much more in profile.

Some of your proportions feel a little too exaggerated. Namely the cranium being too small for the rest of the head, and the ears being a bit too large. Also note that the cylinder form of the neck is a little thicker at the top compared to the base. It can help to isolate the form of the trapezium and add that in after the cylinder of the neck and the clavicles and shoulders are in place.

Ah, I see. In that case I would see what you can do to make the big value shapes easier to read in your ref. Pic related is a smart blur which might make it easier for you to see the bigger forms. I also sloppily outlines some of the value shapes I saw from doing that blur (not great but just to give you a quick example). I'd maybe try adjusting the levels to flatten the value shapes, which would probably work better than what I attached. Probably one of the best ways is to draw with your ref zoomed out to a thumbnail size, or squint through your eyelashes to knock out some of the distracting detail and draw that.

Point being that as long as the relative values in each of these shapes is correct, the forms will read. Try to not let your details cause huge changes in value for each of the larger shapes you see. Use whatever method/tools you need to help you see the bigger value shapes that are present.

>its not as dark as it should be?
That's up to you. If you want it to read like a statue, then following the values in the ref should be fine. If you want the cowl to read as a darker local value than the skin, then all of the tones in the cowl need to darken together (you might be able to leave the brightest parts alone if you want the material to read as being shiny).

Thanks, I appreciate the help. I was using the technique of looking at it from afar to get the basic values. What I have trouble with is getting the detail with the shading which I first tried (wrongly). After I get the basic values how do I get the details, it always looks blurred or too smooth

>After I get the basic values how do I get the details, it always looks blurred or too smooth
You'd follow a similar approach to what you did to establish the larger shapes, but redefine them according to the smaller subshapes. Since you're working in pencil, make sure all of your large shapes are as light as the lightest subshape within. Then when you go in to define the subshapes you can apply more tone and darken where you need to. For these smaller shapes, pay attention to the edges all around, whether they're soft or hard, and how soft or hard they should be. As long as those shapes are correct with the right values and the right edges all around, your details should gradually build up on their own without looking blurry.

Does that make sense?

90 degrees angles equally divided spaces centered focal point and your choice of camera angle makes this literally the most boring picture you could have made.

I can't figure out the story but there simply might nor be one

You lack contrast and form & cast shadows. Your brushwork is pushing its insecurity so hard into my face that I need a rape whistle.
The fact that everything is equally saturated confuses the composition even more.

Throw some effort into perspective and read gurneys color book so you get introduced to using your values and colors properly.

Painting from your imagination probably won't help you improve much in the near future.

The value range is boring, I think you should make the closer knight the black knight and the farther one the white one.

What is your focal point? Is it the woman running, the closer knight. What have you done to help that focal point stand out? Is it more detailed? Shaper edges more contrasting values?

Right now my eye is drawn to the farther knight and your dark horizon.

Pick a direction for the sun, and cast harder shadows. The two walls look like they're floating.

The guy holding the girl back, is really short, if the girl stood up she would be taller then him.

Play around with the shadows and the far away shit should have lost edges.

>> No.1980526

>>1980455
Most people here wont give crits for a couple of reasons.
- it takes time and energy. I gave out a few crits for people that have perspective issues before and made a few diagrams to help explain the concepts that they were having issues with. That shit is honestly tiring. It can also take a lot of time to make a well-thought out critique. You have to make organized notes, redlines, and provide examples. I'm sure there are experienced people on this board that lurk and would like to help, but choose not to because of what I mentioned.

- some people just don't want to/feel like it.

- inexperienced artists don't really have a well developed critical eye. By this I mean you intuitively know something is not so good, but don't know what exactly is wrong with an image.

This ties into the quality of the crit as well. I honestly don't consider the "it's shit need more Loomis" types of posts as good advice and should generally be avoided. They point out what you need to keep working on but generally its common sense. "Its shit needs more Loomis" translates to "You don't really understand how to draw the figure, keep practicing". This doesn't really help anyone because you already know that you need to keep working on anatomy, perspective, or whatever you're working on. Also, some of these are bad in the way that they could hurt you by spreading misinformation.

Don't feel bad that you don't get crits here. Most of them are of very-low quality and the really good ones are rare. It's one of the struggles of being self-taught. We don't have someone with years of experience and vast knowledge of the fundamentals to correct the mistakes we make and to guide us forward.

Think of this place as like a class without the teacher.
