Anime/Manga/Cartooning Thread

"To any man who has slaved to acquire skill in his art, it is most irritating to have his ability referred to as a gift. Perhaps there is one genius in a hundred years or more who can achieve perfection by divine inspiration. I have never met such a man, and I do not know any successful artist who did not get there by the sweat of his brow."

Previous Thread: >>1954228

A general message to aspiring artists: "Lack of knowledge can be greater torture than the effort of acquiring it. When all is said and done, nature is your best instructor."

Submit your drawings, receive feedback or critique others! Share your knowledge and remember to thank those who've critiqued or red-lined your drawings. Most importantly, have fun.

This thread is meant for artists who might want to try to make stylized work in-between their studies. It is strongly recommended that you use this thread in conjunction with learning the elements and fundamentals of art. You can also discuss the visual elements of various professional artists as well if you keep it relatively articulate and civil.

You've slapped a bunch of symbols onto symbols, that's what's wrong. ALL proportions are wrong. Nearly all shapes are wrong. Feet do NOT look like that. Sketching does NOT work like that. You are nowhere near the level where you should worry about style.

<<<gtf to sticky>>>

Also, FYI, Uncanny Valley means the specific level in realistic depiction where it stops looking cool and starts giving people the creeps due to how life-like and realistic yet slightly, creepily, wrong, the figure is.

Hopefully you now understand why anons are laughing their asses off, you pompous, blind fuck.

>2 years of drawing on academic knowledge
You're just seeing academic knowledge an another crutch that you think you were lacking. Another one of those "if i had it..." things.

But that's not how it must be. What you lacked wasn't necessarily academic knowledge, but the will to pursue excellence. You have to ask yourself, what's the difference between you (the guy who drew casually) and the people who very early started to read educational books and look for that information? It's not just coincidence, or by luck that they came across those things. You have to WANT to create better art. And you can still start anytime.

>I could have been so good... now it is too late I fear.
This is the same. If you "wanted" to be good back then, you would be good by now. And now you do "want" to be good, but you aren't willing to pursue it. Back then or now, it's still the same situation. That's the difference between someone who got good and you.

I remember that, so please believe me when I say that I've been doing other stuff at the same time, mostly fundamental stuff.

As for the time I've spent doing it, there are tons of reasons for that, it has been a very on and off piece because it depends on another work of mine: the song I was talking about earlier, turns out I compose worse than I draw/paint, so it took me 5 months to finish that part alone, it was my 1st proper song, writing lyrics in my 4th language is way harder than I though, vocaloid interface is messy as hell and there is this thing called mixing and mastering which I had completely ignored in the past

>>1961160
I did some linework but I changed my mind several times along the way, I almost completely redrew it before this thread

>>1961455
I've noticed that darkening some areas breaks (at least for me) some of the illusion of the stylization, it is extremely hard to find a balance on this kind of pieces.

>>1962187
To each his/her own I suppose, I love imperfections on the skin, showing form, chiaroscuro, etc...

I know very well that the original character art is anime-ish but this is after all a personal interpretation.

Ok, I swear I will stop now, I know people are sick of it but I don't want you to feel disappointed or that I don't understand your advice. So next time I upload this (hopefully next week) it will be the final iteration.

A pottery teacher gave his class a choice, either make a 100 pounds of pots to pass or make one perfect one.

but you'd have to make 100 pots anyway if you're trying to make a perfect pot, it's not like oil painting where you can just continually rework a single piece. either option leads to 100 pots and more experience with the medium. in fact those that needed to make 100 lbs of pottery are encouraged to indulge in bad habits, as poorly-thrown pots have a lot of clay left in the bottom that hasn't been pulled up into the walls, so badly thrown pots will help them reach their goal more quickly.

It's just kind of lopsided and needs a bit of filler in a few places. Watch the leg holes of the swimsuit too, because you had it open over one hip but down on the other. You might consider rounding your lines out a bit more, but the angled look can work for some people.

For the pits themselves, it's mostly a matter of studying muscles. There's a bunch interacting there which define the shape, so hunt down some charts and reference material. I included one to get you started.

Basic things to improve your comic 200% with your current drawing skills:
- learn the basics of lettering -- most importantly, use guides for lines of text, and draw your letters carefully (think of them as shapes, not text)
- plan pages/strips beforehand to ensure you can have balloons and not cramp the page
- sketch in the text first, then draw balloon to fit it properly
- do not make your balloon tails black
- use more hatching to make panels more readable
- use thicker outlines for elements in the foreground than in the background
- plan out your pages/strips beforehand to make sure your panel order is clear to the reader

As for your art:
- go do sticky

In CSP/MS5, for a manga style canvas, do you have to save the final result as a resized image, or save the huge version THEN resize? Both end up in weird antialiasing or just plain blurry. I could just make the canvas smaller but I'm using the default size for manga because it must be that for a reason.

Just started gesture drawings. Can I get some input on technique and form as to what I have right and maybe what I need to focus on more (preferably with referring to a particular gesture number)? 15-24 were 2 minute gestures and those prior to them were 5 minute gestures. What comes after getting gestures down? Because my drawings look horrible when I try to draw on top of the gestures.

Going on my own but I have skimmed the sticky and flipped through some of the books. It's my understanding that gestures capture the pose or movement of a figure. Should gestures have less detail than what I put?

Check out Proko's videos or Hampton's course for an in-depth guide, it's about the movement and intent of the pose, and then you build forms on top. Now it looks like you're trying to construct the figure right away and it looks kinda like those mannequins and stiff as hell.

>What pens do you use
When I feel like a scrub I use a Pilot Fine Liner. It is fast and pretty forgiving because it is thicker. Cheap and good for sketching.
When I'm feeling more confident I use Sakura microns 01 and 005. They are much thinner and every line matters.
Then if I am in a particularly good mood I will color with copic sketch markers

I don't like the bubbles in panel 4. Hard to read; distracting. Try to fix the composition of some of your panels, like the order they're in.

To be honest it seems like you didn't really focus much on the under drawing, and when you realized you don't have enough space in the panel for your full dialog, you resorted to those bendy-bubbles...

What resources could I use to create convincing( not exactly 100% real) jean textures like pic related ?
In photoshop.
I mostly do figure drawing of my own stylized characters.
