Anime/Manga/Cartooning Thread

"To any man who has slaved to acquire skill in his art, it is most irritating to have his ability referred to as a gift. Perhaps there is one genius in a hundred years or more who can achieve perfection by divine inspiration. I have never met such a man, and I do not know any successful artist who did not get there by the sweat of his brow."

Previous Thread: >>1949863

A general message to aspiring artists: "Lack of knowledge can be greater torture than the effort of acquiring it. When all is said and done, nature is your best instructor."

Submit your drawings, receive feedback or critique others! Share your knowledge and remember to thank those who've critiqued or red-lined your drawings. Most importantly, have fun.

This thread is meant for artists who might want to try to make stylized work in-between their studies. It is strongly recommended that you use this thread in conjunction with learning the elements and fundamentals of art. You can also discuss the visual elements of various professional artists as well if you keep it relatively articulate and civil.

Am curious to see sample of anon's handwriting. Might be helpful in determining what needs do.

Very basics: grasp pen correctly. Do not squeeze, it only prevents your muscles from working properly.

For long lines, move entire arm, not just wrist and hand.

Feel free to turn paper around to circumvent awkward angles.

Have proper, accurate sketch/underdrawing. Do a few "ghost lines" (mimic action of drawing the line but keep tool barely off paper) before drawing the line.

Only use French curves and such for inanimate objects and abstracts.

don't get attached to anything you do at this stage. look at your refs, look at real girls, google anatomy images, search for sexy pictures of girls, give more form, more volume, more curves, some fat, watch the fuck out for contour disease! meaning don't focus so much on the countour! use shapes and basic forms to outline the body first, gesture, whatever, i know this paragraph is terrible, deal with it. don't focus on the minor details (the face etc) yet, you're not at that stage! unless you're doing a portrait. work fast, fast, fast. do that picture 5-10 times quick, and pick the best one, delete the others, they are shit. slap a monkey, slap yourself, and like i said, don't fucking get attached to anything at this stage.

There really is no right answer, just draw.

The only advice that's generally on point is to draw from observation so you ca build a good base and to make sure that you don't get stuck in your comfort zone.

I need help, and this is the best thread to ask so here goes. I am new to art, but I think I have a decent enough foundation to at least draw basic characters. I'm having a rough time with the eyes though. I have this obsession about making everything 100% perfect with the eyes. I will spend literally hours on the eyes alone. Aligning them and messing with them until they look perfect. I think I just realized how much of a waste of time this is, but I need clarification. Eyes are always changed and doing different things independently of each other. Eyes rarely ever look perfectly symmetrical, and I noticed that a lot of artists aren't exactly anal about the eyes being perfectly aligned and symmetrical. How do I get out of this mindset, and just relax and make the eyes loosely instead of obsessing over this shit?

Let me rephrase my question since it was worded like it was written by a 1st grader.

Does anyone here know any tips, tricks, or guideline templates that can help me line up the eyes easily on a stylized character, so basically huge eyes, that I can use as guides for when I draw them while maintaining some kind of uniformity and soundness. I use 2 lines for the top and bottom of the eyes that go across the head. It rarely works out for me. The irises are always different sized or just plain wrong. I've tried drawing tons of faces, but I just can't get the eyes to work. There's always something off with them. Either the angles are wrong, the tilt, the irises, the innereye fleshy area, the top isn't rounded in the right spot compared to the other eye, etc.

I would post something, but I don't really have anything saved that's worth posting. So just imagine a retarded monkey tried to draw a girl with a stick.

Alright, I know the drawing is shit and simple, but I don't think giving it more detail will help with the question I had, so here is an example.

Lets say this is my character. When I draw it, the eyes look perfectly fine to me. Then after an hour I start noticing everything messed up with them. I mirror it and notice things that I didn't see before. Like the pupils are slightly off, the irises are different sizes, or one is too much in the wrong direction. Like, I imagine it looks like total shit to someone else, and it makes me want to just give up and redo the entire eye or face.

this sounds simple but it's the same as with studying images/subjects: you need to grasp the angles, distances and relationships correctly otherwise you're just drawing distorted shit that only looks good in your mind.

On the other hand, there's always stuff like not being content with say, a facial expression not fitting the situation and such, which is not exactly an issue with the drawing itself.

It's Mugi man! She always looks charming :3
But thank you.

Your painting is looking pretty nice btw! I'd say try to be a bit more careful with your linework. Try to think what line you want to put down before you put it down, since some of the linework is a little sloppy. A little extra effort on the face would help too, since the face is what we are naturally drawn to in a picture.
Otherwise pretty good, don't be scared to start blending.

i don't feel like i'm learning anything at all.
everytime i seem to draw something it's like someone completely different drew it. eyes are too wide apart, head too small/big, hair doesn't even work, perspective or anatomy is completely wrong 5 mins in, mouth doesn't even work like it should, arms too long or short, hand is broken or isn't even a hand at all, etc etc.

i don't think i've really learned anything drawing in the last year.

Do studies where you're lacking. Use some damn construction lines and shapes. There is no excuse for having things completely out of shape if you use construction lines. I personally don't use lines because I think better in shapes than when I use the more mechanical based line approach. So silhouettes work perfectly for me. Here's what you do. Figure out proper proportions for what you're trying to draw. Block in a circle for the head, measure while you block in the rest with a large brush, and just get the form. Use the lasso and resize or erase and add shapes as needed until you have a silhouette that resembles what you're trying to draw. Make sure you check the proportions! Measure in heads, find landmarks in the body and learn them well. I use lines for the face, but you can even use a big brush and just add eye sockets into the silhouette, then make sure they are aligned properly and the right size/shape before you opacity down and draw the eyes on top. Construction is a bitch, but you can make it easy. Try different approaches, and take breaks if you're feeling stressed. Being relaxed is a must if you're going to be doing form construction of any type.

>> No.1958605

>>1958601
More to this. Flip your canvas. When drawing the sillhouette for the subject, zoom far out so you can see the entire shape easily. Experiment and don't take anything as the only way to start a picture. Proper construction before you go into detailing and rendering is the most important part, unless you have the skill to wing it, but not many do. Don't stress out over it and be sure to have fun. A proper mindset will take you a long way.

>> No.1958610

>>1958607
Drawing and erasing works just as well. Hell, I do it myself most of the time. It doesn't matter how messy your initial idea is. Go wild until you come up with something. Warming up before starting anything by drawing a bunch of circles, waves or whatever sometimes helps.

>> No.1958617

>>1958610
i usually have my ideas already before i want to draw. i know just how i want it to look, but obviously skill ruins that idea. i still try, but it becomes disappointing to see something which you would have enjoyed drawing before a nightmare before your eyes because of stuff you can't do. like telling someone to fly a jet and just handing them the manual.

really don't think i've ever been happy with anything i've drawn in the last few years, i used to be at a point where i'd draw something and it would look great, but then i'd look at what i drew up to then and my piece that i thought was great becomes trash and i toss it and start the next one.

>> No.1958620

probably need to start over with the basics, fundamentals or whatever again. nothing is seeming to stick, i can be as loose and messy as i want, but if i don't really know where a line is going correctly, i probably shouldn't draw it in the first place.

>> No.1958635

>but if i don't really know where a line is going correctly, i probably shouldn't draw it in the first place.

that's the point of being sketchy, you don't have to commit to one line being correct the first time you place it and it acts as a placeholder so you can judge your next line and there's no limit how many lines you can draw over a particular spot. but of course if you want to draw like kim jong un that's another story and drilling basics is also good, whatever helps you find your process.

I'm asking here rather than make a thread about it because I would like someone to draw something anime related. And this is a thread specifically about drawing anime type general.

I've looked in other places but haven't found anything good on tumblr or DA that didn't look like shit.
