montval sheet papers, they look like cheap disintegrated paper when you wet the paper before doing a wash and stays that way when dried. I'm not sure if the pad ones have the same papers though.

bought pic related
>bought it since I trusted their brand (they make very nice charcoal pencils that I still use)
>sticky as fuck
>doesn't erase shit
>leaves eraser marks that stick on paper and ruin your paper and art by making the paper sticky
>too soft to the point of not being able to maintain a sharp edge on the eraser to erase small parts
>inflexible as fuck; it detaches even if you pull a little (just like clay)

Charcoal and pastels. Not that they were shit(the pastels were) but I personally can't stand them.

I picked up a similar Faber-Castell eraser that's fairly sticky and very soft, but it picks up way better than a normal kneaded eraser. Comes in bright colors for some reason.

I think some of these might be the result of me doing something wrong, if they are it would be great if someone could lead me into the right direction but I had a bad experience with these things

I bought a daler rowny large firm kneaded eraser, it was very firm. I've had it for a few months now and I've yet to be able to knead it out of it's original shape, you can still see the rectangular shape of it.

I bought another one, I think was Faber Castel, it's like goo, I can't even get it out of the packaging of pick it up let alone use it as an eraser.

I've found poundlands pack of 3 for a pound have been the best I've used so far.

I bought a pack of pens from faber castel, the 3 fine point pens are great but the brush pen stopped working after a few weeks and the point wasn't as fine as I would have liked. The ink quality was good but it just dried up despite using it everyday and keeping it in a container.

And lastly a windsor and newton a5 sketchbook
The paper quality is fine and it looked very cool but the thing is falling apart and it's very hard to keep open. I can't open it flat without the use of clips and even then it's stiff in the middle. It's impossible to scan anything from this and is overall unpleasant to use. My hand feels painful after holding it open for 10 minutes. The 2 bits of paper holding the the book to the covers come off easily, one has already broken and if the other breaks the covers will not hold the pages

With markers there really isn't such a thing as too many colors. In fact the reason why working with markers is so expensive is because you NEED a lot of colors. It's not enough to have a a couple different kinds of blues, you need to have lighter and darker values for each of those blues.

Look at it this way: There are 358 colors in the Copic line and it's still considered incomplete. There are 11 regular color families and each one ranges from 00 to 99, plus 000 and 000 which are super light colors. That means that to be complete each family would need to have 102 markers for a total of 1122 colors. Thats just for the color range without getting into the 46 Gray markers, which should be at least 48 and possibly 56.

>> No.1951922

>>1951894

>> No.1951927

This anon >>1951894 is right. Depends on how you use them.
I rarely do any delicate renderings with markers (the ones I have have water-based ink and don't blend as well as the Prismacolors) and use them mostly for quick and expressive (?) stuff. Sketching people I see in the city.
I'm usually more than happy with black and some warm grey, don't think I'd ever need three shades of bright pink.

But can't you also choose individual markers you want to get with the Prismacolors?
Just pick some of the more common colors and whenever you absolutely need more, just buy them specifically.

Had a pack of watercolor pencil crayons on sale, using it just to expand the palette, among with an colorless blender pencil.

Some huge-assed mixed-media paper, Now realized i can use both inks and watercolors on it like Peter Caldwell's method of colored washes.

Before when i had the kolinsky watercolor brush from Raphael back then, I'm concerned what type of ink can be used safely, the Winsor & Newton ink had shellac, first i used on a drip-pen then showed some rust-like surface(alcohol cleans it) that made me think, time to get something safer so i got Pebeo ink instead and brush cleaner soap. Huge difference indeed

>> No.1952030

>>1951922

Pencils are sort of the same. You can't mix them but you can control the intensity of the color with your pressure. They're also really cheap so a 72 pack should be plenty.

I think the best medium to start learning traditional coloring is watercolor or ink or any sort of liquid medium where you can mix.

Yeah, I own a shit load of Copics (read: I am almost close to having the entire collection) for portraiture and still life and I still don't have enough colours for what I need. I'm glad that some degree of blending is achievable but I go through so much ink it's ridiculous.
I'm switching over to oil paint but I just hate having to clean up and take care of brushes and using other fluids for consistency blah blah blah, when using pen is just wham bam, there you go, didn't even make a fucking mess.

Get into watercolors. The only chemicals you're working with is paint and water, and clean up is stupidly easily. Half the time I forget to clean my brushes after a session, but all it takes to clean them is water and some hand soap.

It's fine, they're just pulling your leg. It's a bit pricey compared to a few other brands that have proven themselves to be decent, but depending on your country and software (compability) those might not even be feasible. Wacom's pretty much the industry standard worldwide.

The brush pen is a disposable, it's not going to last long. But there are two things you can do:

1) Pull out the nib. The nibs are double ended so you can get more use out of the pen

2) Load the ink sponge with some india ink.

Pop the cap off the end of the barrel, pull the spongey tube out and use an eyedropper to load it one drop at a time. When it's full it won't suck up the ink as fast and when you overload it it'll start dripping out the other end. Before I filled a Copic with india ink I used this for filling in medium areas.
