Anime/Manga/Cartooning Thread

"Remember that most of the action in your figures must come from you as you feel it rather than from a model. A vital expression is more important here than accuracy."

Previous Thread: >>1934034

A general message to aspiring artists: "Lack of knowledge can be greater torture than the effort of acquiring it. When all is said and done, nature is your best instructor."

Submit your drawings, receive feedback or critique others! Share your knowledge and remember to thank those who've critiqued or red-lined your drawings. Most importantly, have fun.

This thread is meant for artists who might want to try to make stylized work in-between their studies. It is strongly recommended that you use this thread in conjunction with learning the elements and fundamentals of art. You can also discuss the visual elements of various professional artists as well if you keep it relatively articulate and civil.

Can i get some critique on these sketches? I know the proportions aren't quite right, been focusing on the gesture. Also, how to make this coloring style more appealing?

Your style kind of reminded me of neromashin, maybe it's the character. You drawing is quite fappable, two things bother me, one is that the blush lines that you use are very
thick and without any line weight and it makes them look like someone draw them on her face with a marker, take a look at how this artist does it to see what i mean http://exhentai.org/s/025410bbc7/760573-13

The other thing is how you render the eyelids, i know that you wanted to show form and then they are round but the eyes are actually in a pit inside the face and by not showing the forehead's shape
you made the eyes pop out like a horse's, i suggest you either render the whole skull more 3D or you tone down the rendering on the eyes as well.

The stuff you've copied there from Hampton or whoever without doing any actual thinking on your part is an abstraction of how the anatomy works. The plane changes are exaggerated further than real life just to make them more clear. Anime and plenty of other stylistic approaches try to simplify the plane changes, not exaggerate them.

You are the perfect example of someone who just mindlessly copies without actually understanding the practical application of it.

you did do a good job with the rest of the face however.

Hello! I have a few tips for aspiring manga artists, or even those who want to learn the style!

Mark Crilley is a good artist to learn from. He posts lessons on his youtube channel, and even has a couple "How To Draw" books (I only have his first one, but I'm looking for his second)! I also have a "How To Draw" book by Jeannie Lee, and it's really helpful!

Both are great with proportions, expressions, and ideas. Mark's book also helps with setting a scene and the surroundings! Both of them are very different in how and what they draw, but they're both really great!

While we're on the topic of references, there's these great reference sites called Atarichan and AtarichanDrawer. On AtarichanDrawer, you can draw figures over premade poses. On Atarichan, you can make your own poses!

I really hope this helps!

Tried to do that hand color light study from the Q thread. The colors are blending funny. More experimentation is needed and more hand practice.

Been browsing Pinterest recently - sorry don't know the artist refs. Doing quick sketches, then decided to practice coloring. Tried to outline stuff in gel pen to see what it looked like - I don't think it made any difference.

Thinking I might polish a turd or something tonight...

>it comes natural

Does it though? I think we should make a distinction here between your personal style and the actual theory behind good stylization and shape design.

Sure, given enough time, you will naturally develop certain preferences which can be attributed as "your style", but will you naturally develop an understanding of what is actually good stylization? I highly doubt that. There is a lot of theory behind appealing stylization that is not something you just naturally pick up but is rather something you have to actively study and try to understand.

>> No.1940644

>>1940639

There's a difference between learning the theory behind good stylization and personal stylization. From what I read the theory is a mix of "this is how you avoid falling into the uncanny valley" and the effects that certain stylization choices have on the onlooker.

>> No.1940646

>>1940644
Yes, but when you say "personal stylization comes naturally", that means the artist who you told this and now believes that, won't bother learning the theory behind good stylization, so whatever personal stylization will come to him naturally won't be very good due to his lack of knowledge.

Well that isn't *entirely* true. Developing a style requires study on what's appealing, how to invoke a certain feeling, and a lot of winging it to make it look right.

I feel that /ic/ is taking the "don't use MUH STYLE as an excuse and focus on the fundamentals" bit of advice to its logical extreme. Like it's now "STYLE IS LIKE SUPER EASY TO DO YOU BUT YOU GOTTA BE AN ANATOMY MASTER THATLL MAKE LOOMIS AND VILPPU MAD JELLY FIRST"

>> No.1940663

>>1940658
>a lot of winging it to make it look right.

Why would you want to "make it look right" you do it right with a solid foundation. If you are just doing guesswork while you are drawing maybe you should consider changing that and study on what you are guessing and be sure with confidence on what you are doing is in contrast with what you find in life.

The reason why /ic/ is always ontop of anatomy is because the knowledge that comes from anatomy includes proportion and forms necessary to get out of the flat and "into the solid" but that's not mentioning perspective you can not draw the figure without perspective but perspective will not teach you anatomy you must have a strong foundation on these things otherwise you will be guessing and struggling all the time.

>> No.1940665

>>1940654
Now i wont be able to sleep

>> No.1940671

>>1940663

When I say winging it I didn't mean guessing anatomy. I mean trying out new simplifications of form. For example, instead of fully rendering out a figure with all the values you only render with a shadow value, base value, and light value, and seeing what you like, don't like, and screwed up.

Also /ic/ is on top of anatomy because quite honestly it's the easiest bit to point out. We instinctively know when something feels off about a human figure. Most times we know something is off but it takes another pair of eyes to point out where.

"Drawn to life" is a pretty decent book on that subject. Also study gesture drawing. It is quite essential to stylization and uses the same principles of using curves and straights to create appealing contrast and guide the eye through the figure. Force is a good book for gesture drawing for animators.

Did some major turd polishing - it was really boring.
>top - colored a quick sketch of some /ic/ bw ref.
the face and shoulders are wonky, if you hold it at an angle the face almost looks ok... Otherwise, I learned a bit about layering gray over the colors - it helps reduce saturation pretty well.
>bottom - not sure if it counts as OC, I'll post the ref in a sec
while I was inking I realized I had drawn a bunch of pikachus instead of bunnies. I had a lot of fun with the grass. I wish I could redo some of the color choices especially with the outfit, and the skin got too dark with v95. I also kept forgetting where the light source was - so the lighting is really inconsistent

Are colors farther in the BG supposed to be lighter / less saturated? Any tricks for calculating the cast shadow? I'm always afraid I am going to over do it.

I feel as though the foreshortening on the the far streetlights should be more extreme giving the kind of 'lens' you've chosen.

there are some wobbly ellipses on the bike that need to be better in the finished thing, machines and bikes especially for some reason tend to make the smallest mistake very visible.

as it is now there is way way too much pointless space up there in the top-right, you could crop in way closer to the rider. 'filling the frame' as it's called is generally a good idea. if there's going to be something up there be careful that it isn't the same size as the rider (in a 2d sense) otherwise the comp. will be too balanced, you could fix that by repositioning the rider and bringing her/him closer to the viewer.

it's also perhaps a bit boring for a stand alone illustration. if it's part of a series of some kind as an establishing shot or something it's fine.

good stuff, looking forward to seeing more completed versions.

I'm primarily interested in cartooning / comic / manga art, so I'm assuming this thread is the best place to ask.

Where do you begin with practice when it comes to these sorts of styles? I'm assuming I need to have a fluid grasp on being able to draw real human beings and creatures before I even attempt to draw something more along these lines, right? I keep hearing that it's a bad thing and that looking at manga / etc. will influence me in the wrong ways / get me into bad habits / etc.

Or is it something I could / should be practicing concurrently to studying more "traditional" art? I'm afraid of screwing up and winding up like those 'improvement meme' people who don't improve at all in ten years, so I've been avoiding attempting to draw or even look at these kinds of things for fear of it.

You need to start by drawing on paper. Digital art is more advanced and allows you to multiple things that you probably wont be able to do until you master the basics. Start by drawing on paper. Nobody cares about your excuses.

I hate your edgy color palette, shadows that doesn't make any sense (no clear source of light, horns are lighted from the bottom, skull is lighted from left and face is lighted from above and right), your line quality is terrible (next time for making 1 edge use only 1 line), cramped composition looks just ugly (next time spend at least 5 minutes making various thumbnails) and lack of any edge control makes it look very lazy (use masks, watch some videos from ctrlpaint).

Face is far too small for the size of her head, and if you make the face larger it won't make the hands look so gigantic either. Since it's a simplified style I would suggest some thicker lines and varying up your line weight to make the whole thing more interesting to look at.
There's also issues with the body that you could fix by doing more anatomical studies.

your faces are still no good.
as you mentioned, "refinement" is an issue. you faces are too rough, and i'm not talking about the features, i'm talking about the execution in general.
with the eyes you can't even tell where she's looking. there is no character at all.

pic related. you can have simple faces while still retaining some life to it. yours doesn't do that at all.
