Beginner artist here. Muh current project. The main figure is done, the whole picture is about at 50 percent ready. I wish to add some additional dragons to the background and some old WW1-esque biplanes, because dragons vs. biplanes is awesome.

This is perhaps the second somewhat decent digital painting I actually managed to produce. Unleash your criticism. I'm ready.

Only her face or the entire body? You're not the first one to say this, despite that I drew her based on a model (DAZ Genesis). As for her face, it's only a few pixels of a 6000x5000 picture.

What about the dragon?

define the clouds. Use a ref also.

Your main issue is you're not using flats. Use flat colors then blend them in.

technique for clouds in sai are use the brush tool or the pen tool and then the watercolor brush or blend tool.

Marker tool is also pretty good.

I'd draw the thing out. Also learn about composition.

Why are you still scribbling your values in?
Again, the initial looks much more appealing because it looks less like scribbles but more purposeful.

Every stroke should have a purpose, and try to do it all in one stroke rather than messy scribbles.

Also push your values some more.

It doesn't really look like you put much effort into these and seem like you're rushing and forcing them.

What he said >>1935322

Use a bigger brush, and focus on defining the major forms first. One approach would be an egg-like form for the head, with some definition of the eye socket with a sphere, a blocky protrusion for the nose, and the softer protrusion for where the mouth will go. Once those forms are solid, work your way down to smaller and smaller forms.

You could alternatively define everything with a drawing - it can be loose or tight but the shapes and proportions need to be correct. Then paint over that while continuously trying to recover the drawing.

Right now it looks like you scribble in values as you see them from the ref, then keep going until you get closer to something that looks like the ref. It doesn't look like you're taking forms into consideration enough. Try to use one value for each plane, then soften edges as needed. Paint some Asaro heads to get a feel for these planes.

Welp. Being a beginner sucks. But oh well, back to the drawing board. Interesting. Some what unrelated because I have no critique for you, however it reminded me of something. I was at a restaurant once and on the wall there were a bunch of shitty cat drawings. They were like cartoonish but like made up of different things.

They were somewhat small like on postcard 6x4 with shitty frames. And selling for like 5$.

Anyway, back to your drawings.
>10/10 would look at on a restaurant wall and consider buying for 5$ but ultimately decide against it.

Inked in all the parts I want. The lightning and magic circle will be completely colored instead out outlined in black. This is my second ever inked picture. I need to work on my cross hatching and the shading lines. Getting them to a fine point is rough.
I am using a brush pen instead of ink and a regular brush. Should I switch over before I learn completely with a brush pen?

I've been stuck resketching the face and the arms because they aren't coming out right to me. I feel like I'm stuck in the lineart loop where I can't get the face to look the way it should.

Pictures are not a real representation of life. You should never aim to copy a picture, you should learn from it. Not to mention that picture has high iso, giving it grain and low value range.

Values give you so much form if you use them correctly, and shadows will always be dark no matter what created them, you have to use these form & cast shadows to give your piece the illusion of form.

Values are so important I can talk about them the whole day. You should learn to construct with values if you could, never contours. It will even help you with likeness.

Thoughts?
I've been having some trouble with the lighting of the tree in the background. First it was all white, but that was too eye grabbing for me, then it was the same shades of blue as the stag, but that seemed to bright. I just darkened it but it still seems wrong. How do I fix it?
And is there anything else I'm missing? I've been staring at it for too long.

Only thing I can say is that the arm is a tiny bit stiff, but that's nitpicking.

Maybe work on the foot a little more, make it a bit smaller as well?

The construction and idea are great. Only thing is the values and in some part, the colors. Everything from the line down gets real muddy. I'd suggest all that stuff that's in shadow, just go with a midtone and a dark dark. Everything above use a bright bright/highlight and a midtone, with maybe one more lighter or darker value in there. If you can get that down try and get the colors/temperature to go with those values - cooler in the shadier/darker areas, warmer in lighter etc...

Awesome for imagination sopaceing man

Thanks so much for these. They were really specific and helpful. and exactly what I needed from another pair of eyes. Good call on the guitar indent too - didn't even notice it. your lines are bulky, you're stopping them abruptly and you're using too much pressure. reduce the size of your brush a little, and try to finish your lines with less pressure than the middle. I don't know how to explain this well, but it gives a more natural line quality.
maybe you can tweak some settings in the software you're using.
