>But he would be able to show that, with or without the car.
True but think of it this way:
Without the car we'd have the warm face with busy details in front of the warm building with busy details. Not a lot of contrast. The car provides value and temperature contrast, as well as detail contrast (the top plane of the car is handled very smoothly). All of this provides contrast and emphasis on the face.

I don't know if he added the car when he noticed he needed to make the face pop, or if the car was originally going to be nearby and was moved when the potential was seen. It's also completely possible that it's placement was an accident at first, but there's no doubt the artist saw the potential for contrast and emphasis and pushed that.

>different anon btw

Oh, and I'm also led to believe that it's planned when you also look at the other people running. The three figures on the right in the shadow are wearing white shirts, while all the figures in the light on our left are wearing dark colored shirts. That kind of contrast seems intentional to provide a quick and easy read. It allows the audience to easily interpret the crowd from the corner of their eye, instead of having to scan and find everything.

Wrong, the composition is what can be seen from the thumbnail. The big shapes that make the image read. Say, the hair has a certain rhythm as one, big readable shape, that's part of the composition. Single strands of hair that can not be seen from the thumbnail? Nope, that has zero impact on the comp and is just detail, which can obviously be drawn in a way to accentuate the composition, or to be more pleasing to the eye, by breaking it down into small, medium and large shape design. The true composition of an image however is only influenced by the big shapes that are visible from the thumbnail.

You still have a lot to learn before you can teach anyone anything, noobie.

looking at it now I think I should move the front bear-guard more to the left corner and maybe drop the figure in the back (between the fox assassin and the bear guard) but I am trying to bring in a crowd, you know, people in the court witnessing the scene

imo it's just not a very enthusiastic angle. it's this big exciting scene and you've staged it almost like a diorama or a medieval illustration, complete with audience heads framing it.
if you're not purposely going for that, do some quick thumbnails. at least ten. experiment with where you set the 'camera' in the room. if it's so important to see the court maybe try setting the camera on the other side, behind the assassin, so we can see them witnessing it.

is the king/queen about to die, or are they already dead? if they're about to be killed, a more clearly threatening pose and a drawn weapon from the fox, along with a more fearful pose from the king would help get the point across.

if the point of interest is the throne, tone down the greyscale contrast of everything else.

I don't have a cute answer. But NC Wyeth is considered to be one of the greatest illustrators of all time, predating Frank Frazetta. He designed beautiful book covers. This particular image is usually considered to be one of the best examples of great composition. Also consider this was what early 1900s? Before this most art was portraits and landscapes. Now you have artists combining them into images like these.

Why does composition need to be any more complex than this? I'm not even challenging you anon. You should try to ask more questions when looking at art.

Advertising/Editorial/Magazine/Children's Book illustration. You'd see art like this in a NYC scene.

Check out The Society of Illustrators Annual book. http://www.societyillustrators.org/default.aspx

It's like a thick ass book of submissions. It's a different world, you might hate everything in there. But I doubt it because each artists has a different style and a different story. No offense but a lot of you think the only thing is making character turn arounds for some AAA studio or card art. Sorry to generalize.

But check out this world.

I know that. I'm just saying that's a trend for a lot of tumblr hobbyist artists, disney/pixar inspired art with sprinklings of anime, red noses, and A LOT of pandering. Those are pro artists who know what they're doing and can make amazing illustrations. I know it's been done well before tumblr was a thing and that saying it's "le dumblr art" so it worth puking over is a retarded thing to say.

i feel like the composition is okay in this piece if its a panel in some sort of story, but as a standalone panel it feels unbalanced and bland since there arent any truly interesting secondary or tertiary focal points. I feel like the values could be pushed a lot further while still maintaining the frozen wasteland feel as well as spending more time rendering since it looks a bit unpolished (see lazy blurring in foreground). Simply not interesting enough in itself

>>1960804
not any good uses of negative space (besides maybe the edge of the frame and the face on the left) and the uniform lineweight makes the whole thing really jumbled with nowhere to rest the eyes for very long. The colors could be more interesting as well, since everything is warm/magenta with minimal lighting. looks like they just blocked in the main shapes and never bothered to render, and although this is probably the style the artist is going for it looks lazy to me

This is Frozen concept art, right? It obviously had to be done quickly, so there's that, but I think it perfectly conveys the cold and the loneliness. Reminds me of something by Pascal Campion, who works insanely fast, but his pieces have so much emotion.

His skill is depleted now too. Now he's barely better than egoraptor. also he's taken 3 years so far do his kickstarter thing that he said would take 7 months. And he's not even animating that himself, and it's not like it's all on ones or something.
Why would anyone hire a guy who
>is notoriously difficult/demanding to work with
>doesn't like anything new
>can't deliver on time
>can't actually draw that well
