Yo guys, so I have this webcomic going, any advice on how to promote it on the web?
Im on page 67 right now and updating constantly:

Reported for advertising, faglord.

>> No.1930871

I came as far as 31 and then I dropped it. Nothing happens, bro. having stuff happen is important in comics, it's a storytelling medium at its core after all. The art is nice, although admttedly it sometimes gets a little too busy to personal liking and I'm not a fan of the tumblr and scott pilgrim influences. Also your panelling flow could be better at times.

>> No.1931013

I really like your art. I think some of the pages are pretty damn cool. But as >>1930871 said, it's boring and unremarkable as a comic.

It's pretty hard to advertise since there are no single pages that can posted on forums and social media for laughs/discussion/Iknowthatfeel etc.

Try pumping it in artistic circles, where you can get fans based on technical skill. Or pick up a writer and try something else.

Try asking the webcomic thread on /co/, they'd be a lot more helpful than /ic/ would be.

what they said. Art is nice for a webcomic, but without any dialog and character interactions, it is pretty much impossible to create interest for it no matter how much you promote it. Try to make it less artsy and abstract and give it a direction that people can follow and get invested in. Then promote it on /co/ or ask other webcomic artists if they are interested in cross-promotion.

This. One of the most popular webcomics out there is just a bunch of stick figures talking about nerdy shit and a bunch of others had terrible art to start with.

lol welcome to the part of art that has nothing at all to do with art whatsoever.

good luck nigger, any more mention of your shit will get you blocked on most communities. you have to plant a seed and hope it doesn't suck.

>> No.1931032

>>1931031
by the way if a seed doesn't grow into a cancer or diseased plant, it can still be nurtured into a great tree, so don't give up OP >>1930794

It's a drawing/writing medium. You better brush up on those two skills. And now you are a marketer. You better become a ninja salesman. Cause NOBODY cares what you're selling. But they do care about that popular movie/tv show everybodies talking about.

He's not advertising, he's asking HOW to advertise. PS, buy a goddamn ad, OP. Is that so hard? No seriously - buy some ads. Word of mouth will only go so far, especially if you don't already have a big internet presence.

Also make a tumblr if you don't have one, and post your art and that your comic has updated there. It's essentially free advertising, esp. if people reblog your work. And since your art isn't terrible, that shouldn't be hard.
>>1931124
Pretty sure he meant XKCD.

>> No.1931589

lost me on the first five pages. It doesn't make sense to have 4 pages for a transition... She should've gone to the next game almost instantly. That was my problem.

>> No.1933478

>>1931024
you could do an entire comic without any dialogue and let the art do the talking, but god damnit you need to be REALLY fucking skilled to do it and it cant be long... i got 14 pages in before i stopped caring.

>>1931589
this, i had a vague idea of what was going on, but not enough that i could get invested in it.

>>1930794
the art you made looks more like it would have a place on a shirt, not a page for a webcomic.

better luck with your next one, learn from this failure and make new, better things.

>> No.1933560

Good art but writting could be better. I enjoy the concept of having a character transition between worlds and exploring them through videogame cartridges.
The problem was your execution of the idea. You kinda just jump between the worlds and don't have your character/plot really develop. Things just kinda happen without much consequence or reward.
Promotion wise, this looks like something that'd get good attention on tumblr, because of the comic format and the vidya references.

>> No.1933565

>>1930794
>character is cute little girl
>story has no lewd

why do you people keep doing this? why?

>> No.1933567

The art is nice, even if it's a bit busy in some panels. I'd experiment with panel layout too if I was you. Also, I don't really like the fact she stays in a game for like one page. Boom she's in FF and then she just flies through and is in Little Mermaid for like 3 panels?

There's not much room for character progression or plot, let alone any kind of danger or stuff to develop. The silent comic thing could work for a little bit I guess. (I'm reminded of another comic the creator of Minus did that was silent for like 40 pages and it was still enjoyable.)

>> No.1933597

>>1930794
You have no story or dialogue to keep someone interested and the only thing pushing it is the over the top visuals. looks good but very modern kitsch work.
Advertise to the animekings and top teir reddits and make dolla son. they'll come their pants over shit like this huffin n shit buy an ad on reddit, or some other site like anime or video game site like kotaku.

>> No.1933600

>>1930794
I think the strongest part of this is the fact that it's so experimental and abstract, the thing that really kills it for my is the actual substance doesn't leave a lot to be desired as a standalone. Your art style really shows how creative you are, hope this works out. Promoting is pretty easy via tumblr especially with something like this, I personally thought the artstyle alone was enough to keep me in to the end but I think if you're ultimately focused on the success of the comic versus just a for fun thing you're going to need to put more time into the actual storytelling I'd suggest updating less frequently and focusing on that one specific thing. I think the lack of dialogue can work in your favor as long as it's done well, good luck.

>> No.1933604

Look up project wonderful, start using that to advertise on other web comic sites that use them.

OP? Who is your reader base? Who is your target audience? Are your readers going to be 20 somethings that know all the references to these older games?

Figure your target audience, then advertise where they prowl the internet.

>> No.1933609

I have a serious issue with the fact that a guy with this kind of art gets 11 dollars per month on patreon while there are faggots drawing sonic scat porn getting much more.

My advice is that if you need money, make a side account, draw some porn or fanart, do some commissions, use a different name, of course, you don't want that on your portfolio. Make some money and go advertise this comic. It's great and you should get more recognition.

>> No.1933628

People will read a comic with appealing art and shit characters and writing for a chapter. People will read a comic with shit art and appealing characters and writing until the end.

See: xkcd, anything by Fukumoto, Questionable Content (which I think has shit art and shit writing, but apparently it works for other people.)

At the end of the day, what matters is that your comic can manage to clearly convey some good writing.

Page 18 and that tumblr loli still falling and falling and falling and being cute and confused and super surprised at cute colorful things around her while she falling and falling and falling...

Alright! I managed to finish reading all 67 pages!

Okay so, OP, what is the point of all this? What is it? Also, a lot of people are saying "advertise it to tumblr! They might love this because of the style". Dude, no. There is nothing in this. For something called "My 8-bit Story", there is no story to be told. Sure, it might attract, let's say, a handful of teenage nerds? but this kind of work probably will not make it which is a shame because you seem to put a lot of effort in your art.

My advice would be like that one anon said. Just forget this project exists, move on to a new one and don't forget how you fucked up on this project.

Having an engaging comic with no words is kind of neat, but not all people can make it work. This doesn't work.

because he doesn't even have a following yet, why would he even consider patreon when he hasn't built a fanbase??? it makes no sense

>> No.1933701

>>1933699
A lot of people have been doing that nowadays. There was even someone from /co/ webcomics thread who has only a single chapter of his work and he already has a patreon - only a $47-ish patreon as of now though. I guess every dollar is worth it...?

>> No.1934142

Crazy cool art, dude, but there's no structure. Things just... happen with no rhyme or reason, and while it looks cool, I have zero emotional investment. She's falling and it looks cool, and then she's falling some more, and then there's another dinosaur, and everything looks great, but nothing MATTERS. Give the story room to breathe.

Would be an AMAZING music video.

>> No.1934390

Your character looks like a mary sue.

>> No.1934400

Your art skills are fantastic. Your writing skills are nonexistent. This would have worked if it was an animated short, but as a comic, it's very meh.

Meh. It's a shame because I basically like the artwork and the palette. It's just that it's poorly executed, and at any rate, the concept is a bit too "Scott Pilgrim" for my tastes if you know what I mean - you know, super-self-aware, eye-rolling references, aimed squarely at the geek chic hipster crowd who have probably never played most of the games being referenced.

Also, getting "zapped into a series of game worlds"? That's like, the second laziest story trope ever, after "and I woke up and it was all a dream".
