I'd focus on basic proportion for a good while longer if I were you.

Go back to your reference and actually check your measurements. Compare the size of the head to the body, and pay particular attention to the spaces between the chin to the bottom of the nose/nose-to-brow/brow-to-hairline, as well as the overall height vs width of the entire head. Compare the relative sizes and the spaces between of all the features with your reference.

As a rule just start with the big shapes and get those right before you get bogged down in the details. On a similar note try using a bigger brush in general. It'll help you focus on the big overall shapes and forms, as well hopefully preventing you from getting dragged into the details before you're ready.

Good luck anon.

The major issues are the width of her face, the placement of her eyes, the angle of her mouth and the overall head proportions ("rule" of thirds). You're right though, a lot of it is miniscule but a lot of small minor mistakes just end up compounding on one another - especially with portraits. Get the major stuff nailed down first or you'll often end up with lots of little isolated areas which look perfect but somehow don't tie together.

Anyway here's some basic checks you can do - http://i.imgur.com/G99sbw9.jpg Pay attention to where the lines intersect different features, as well as the overall shape of her head.

Put all that into practice and you'll end up with something that (hopefully) looks closer - see the gif. Your values look good though anon, keep it up.

Pose is ambiguous - I can't tell if the arms are coming forward holding an invisible object or if they're supposed to be on her waist. Head's a little big, and face is too big for the head. Your lighting is also flat and inconsistent.

Construct the body from basic forms (boxes and cylinders), pick a definite primary light source direction, and use the construction to better map out what planes are facing the light and which ones aren't.

Redline for possible pose suggestion. Either way I'd look for some refs or take photos of yourself and extrapolate what you need.

Look like he might be a little off balance, like he'd fall over to our left.

Clothes are a little too form fitting, especially the pants (all over but the transition below the calf is pretty stark).

The pelvis looks a little ambiguous. I suggest drawing out the entire top of the stool in perspective minding the horizon. Then place a pelvis sized box planted on top. Make sure the top of the torso builds off the top of this box, and the leg cylinder emerge correctly from the box without too much chair clipping (a little is fine due to deformation of the flesh and the cushion).

I do like the face. The giant holiday ornaments are a little weird in the context of everything else being ordinary (guy, stool, presents on floor).

You could probably lose a bit of the right side of the canvas and expand the left a bit. Be sure to do a dozen or so value thumbnails before jumping into the painting to figure out lighting, arrangement and local value of background and objects, etc.

Oh, and the knees look freakishly large. Pull up some anatomy diagrams for reference. Even on muscular people, the region that contains the knee cap, the end of the femur, and the head of the tibia and fibula doesn't vary much in volume. It's mostly just bones, ligaments, thin tendons, and other soft tissue that isn't muscle.

The really fine brush strokes are ruining it. Areas like the eyes look like you're approaching this like a drawing rather than a painting. The nose is good, paint the rest like that. Try using a bigger brush and stay zoomed out. Don't put any details unless they are absolutely necessary and are a clear improvement over your base. Don't put too much contrast in the details - smaller shapes will require subtler value and color transitions.

Get a ref for that beard. It's too shiny and groomed like a shampoo commercial. Should be matte and messy.

I like the figure. The robot looks silly, off balance, and nonsensical. Doesn't match the mood and handling of the figure and the painting as a whole. Gritty and real characters and worlds requires gritty and real robots. You can have some level of fun and silliness to the design, but it'd need to be toned down.

For making the mech more realistic, think about the joints and how it moves. Reference real robots from locomotion labs and factories, as well as vehicles and construction equipment.

Horizon looks too high compared to the figure. Composition is static and boring. Try to direct your shot as a director for films would. Camera placement and angle, type of lens, lighting used, etc all work together to convey a mood and help tell a story.

Current setting is confusing. Looks like a stage, except there's a hole in the backdrop and a post apocalyptic world outside? Doesn't even look like the building as adequate room for the backstage area - the destroyed background is also the wall of the building?

The nose and the nipples will come later when I fully shade, if you're saying that's symbol drawing. The lines for them are just to tell where they are, later I'll color them in. What's wrong with the rest?

She was being condescending. I'm exactly looking for something like you said. Just saying ''fix it '' isn't enough. I need to know what's wrong.

I'm not going totally after the original reference, I wanted to give more focus on the face so she's semi-sitting on the bed, lifting herself a bit of the mattress to show her vagina, so the arms are under her. She's propping herself up on the bed. (bad red line picture to explain)

I admit full fault on the vagina, I googled doxy pussy and everything that comes up are a bunch of ponies, however their pussies are well drawn. I'll use that.

I don't really think that one should use line art for nipples, I think if any line art is used it's should be just a little tiny bit, the areola is just a slightly darker skin tone than the breast, so you should let the coloring do the talking. So those nipple lines are just for show until I start to color them in.

Looks pretty good, your forms and lighting are on point. Aside from the proportion issues you mentioned, you could use a harder brush for the hard edges. Your shadows have good hard/soft edges already but the muddy brushwork makes them less distinct than they could be and everything kind of blurs together. Having them terminate more crisply on the hard side will add a lot to your work.

I need some help with this before I shoot myself in the fucking face.

I have a tendency to get stuck on a lot of my drawings, and for some reason a lot of these are relatively simple poses like the one in the picture. It's like I can't draw if I don't have a more dramatic perspective to work with. It's like my brain refuses to understand form when I'm drawing something head on.

In this picture, I've also fucked the proportions beyond belief, and I don't really know why. I know the head is too small and the hips/legs too large, and it's just poorly drawn in general. I'm not used to drawing huge breasts, so I think that every time I enlarge the breasts, I redraw the body bigger to compensate, because the oversized breasts look odd to me.
I've put so much time into this pile of shit that should have been a quick and easy picture, and I just want to be done with it. A redline or any tips would be great.

The idea here is to have large breasts and an hourglass shape. I'm not going for chubby.

Literally just lasso tooled everything under her left arm and shrunk it.

For more accurate and reliable results, construct the body. Use a box or a simplified head shape for the head, and do the same for the ribcage and the pelvis. It's a lot easier to check proportions that way. Draw the entire figure without the breasts, then slap them on after you have a construction for everything else.

I know I can do better, and I'm sick of posting shit that is below par. The few things I have online that I've actually finished, are things I've posted that I was sick of working on and not really happy with. Over the years, I've gotten increasingly tired of drawing, and both my progress and enjoyment have stagnated significantly. However, In the past month or so, I've finally been able to work at a more steady pace and produce better pictures, and I feel like I can finally get started on a site when I have enough stuff to put on there. But I'm not going to post a bunch of shit or half-assed sketches. I want it to be up to my own standards.

Well, I think you're being too hard on yourself. I used to have the same attitude about posting sketches and unfinished things but a friend said that I should, and once I did I felt like a weight lifted off my shoulders. I felt more like drawing, and felt like I could be looser, and I think I started improving a hell of a lot more than I had been for a long time once that happened. I still work on longer pieces that I take to finish, but I feel like the energy of sketching and posting as I please keeps me going. It's for you to decide of course but I think you might find yourself hitting those marks you've set if you give yourself some breathing room.

>>1924697
This guy is somewhat right that you can just shrink it and skew it after you're somewhat done with the sketch. But this will not solve your problem permanently, cause as you admit, you're losing a lot of time just refining, tweaking, editing and so on and it's annoying to even continue doing the piece. I've experienced this (still do sometimes) and it sucks big time, I know.
I'd follow his advice to draw the body first and the breasts last.

Other than that from that picture in particular, it looks like your problem is that you're making the waist a bit too long (maybe this happens accidentally when you're making a big waist arch). So if you purposely double check that in your sketches, you might begin to see and fix it.

Also, double check neck connection to head and the far shoulder seems too long. Everything is in pic related.

>>1924711
At this point I don't know if I'll ever make a portfolio. My art is so varied I don't think I have 2 pieces that look alike or share the same style. I like not having muh style all the time but it makes me wonder.

Btw, for the neck/shoulder business you can just move the neck and head.

My number one construction advice when drawing figures is to always draw a middle line when something looks off. Connections and perspective issues can be fixed easily that way.
I'm more for resorting to ways to cheat your eyes into seeing properly than for grinding 'the fundamentals'. You pretty much have the construction knowledge down, just work on proportions/connections. Ganbatte!

The proportion thing is something I find extremely frustrating, because it's something that's so obvious. But when you look at something for too long, you lose the ability to see it for what it really is, which I'm sure you've experienced.
So I can draw something I think looks great, then come back a week or two later, only to notice all the flaws and wonky propotions. This problem doesn't really seem to have a solution.

Another problem I've noticed, is that my mood greatly affects how I see my art. I'm a cynical, negative asshole, so I tend to see most of my art as really bad. However, when I'm in a good mood, everything looks better, and I become more creative as an artist. It's as if I only see my flaws when I'm in bad mood, and only see the good parts when I'm in a good mood. It's hard to tell which view is correct, and I have no fucking clue what other people see.
When I was younger, there were artists I saw as greatly skilled and inspiring, that I today see as bland and unskilled.
Ah well.

You're socially retarded because you're on 4chan and don't understand the people who come here. 4chan is an anonymous board with roots in Japanese pop culture, with few rules that are actively enforced. A consequence of this is that people are much more free to post what they want, and will be more vocal about their opinions. The culture is steeped in porn, anime and every superficial and degenerate form of pop culture you can think of. And you actually come here, on a nsfw art board, to post mainstream art, and demand everyone else to only cater to your particular tastes? You have to be completely retarded to not understand that you're out of line here.
The internet is full of boards for people like you, so I really don't see what you're doing here.

I don't want to speak in defense of that guy because he was a real prick to some of the people trying to advise him, but aside from that he and anyone else can discuss all genres of art here, that's just how it is. You should expect bad art because there are a lot of bad artists here.
If art is sacred to you then so is pornographic art. You may argue otherwise, and in that case it is not art which is sacred to you, it's art with an arbitrary exception. It can absolutely be beautiful, meaningful and "have a purpose". Most of it won't on this board, but that goes to every piece here, not just the pornographic ones.
The thing you can do to change this in the right direction is to give those bad artists good critique and help them improve. You can't just force someone to stop doing something they like, and trying to do so will backfire. You can, however, give them knowledge, and with newfound knowledge and wisdom, they can make whatever right choice there is on their own.

OP of that girl here:

You embody the reason I love /ic/. Nice to-the-point analysis and advice.

Her name is Tumera. Not quite bipolar, but dissociative identity disorder and a bit paranoid schizo. Her mom was really strong and constantly trying to kill her (jealous + psycho as well), so her dad infused her with the soul of a Phoenon (flaming bird/insect beings that live inside stars like hives) hoping it would protect her.

At first it turns her fear into flames and makes her go berserk, but later she learns to control it and becomes a sub-protagonist of the story.

She's called the Phoenon "princess" because the soul is of the daughter of the Phoenon that created the Sun. Out of context it makes no sense, but it was seen as a king.

You're right about the tomboy thing, too. I'm glad her looks tell that without having to see her in action!

Does anybody happen to have any tips for painting a fairly convincing texture fairly quickly? I'm trying to paint a glossy hardwood floor. Preferably going for a darkish wood, I guess like it was stained.

>> No.1925662

>>1925660
Do it in steps. Get the brown base in place first - complete with hue shifts and diffuse lighting and all that jazz. Next paint in the wood grain and use a separate layer. Look up references for the types of shapes you should be painting. You may have to adjust blending modes or the opacity of this layer. Last, add in specular reflections on a third layer on top of everything else.

IIRC, algen has a psd demo from a few years ago (possibly on his devart) that had a room with a wooden table. I imagine he used a similar layering approach.

>> No.1925663

It was a PSD, and I found it here:
http://algenpfleger.deviantart.com/art/Livingroom-psd-211431174

It's a bit of a hassle to navigate, but it looks like he manually paints in the wood grain using different texture brushes, then adds lighting effects on separate layers.

You could try a similar approach, but with the base color and wood grain on separate layers as mentioned in the previous post.

He's harmless enough and doesn't seem to ever post crit or reply to others, and he seems committed to his style of drawing so I don't bother him.

Okay I know I said I wasn't going to post any more wips but I'm really excited about how this picture's going and I wanted to share. I'm still getting used to working with a less saturated palette, and working with color in general, so the colors probably look pretty weird right now, I'm going to adjust them today and finalize the lighting and rendering. Ah man, I'm really enjoying this one.

Any and all criticism is more than welcome, help me improve. I rarely draw people, but Korra just needed it. I sketched this on paper first then everything else in ps.

Something just doesn't seem right though. It might be because I've looked at this for a few hours but korra is pretty well known so maybe you can spot the glaring mistake.

You're right! and the reason they're misaligned is I was going for a more angle-y shot at first but I guess I don't understand shadows enough to make that work.

Thanks, I'll mess with the hair too to match. :)

>> No.1926117

>>1926093
I'll be getting to that today. The main light is pretty much going to be above him and more or less in front of him, since he's near a wall, with some soft light coming from the tree, so there'll be a little bit of rim light on the side. I figure I'll get the temperatures more defined after I adjust the local colors and start rendering. I mean I guess it's best to set them up at the start and just go in for finishing details, but for me and all my inexperience coloring things, I usually can't tell what needs to go where until I have some color put down. Hopefully as I keep practicing this, I'll be able to make more of those color choices in the earlier stages of a painting.

When you're bordering realistic territory, I find it looks better that you don't use any black to make lines, wrinkles or shapes, because that's not how our faces look. They don't have black lines. It's ok when you're doing something that's not detailed or stylized like manga but you should rather use dark red on opacity 03 to shade it in Marios case. Also, sometimes it helps to make the holes in the nose orangy red. Though it's not technically correct it can make the drawing look more realistic.

>> No.1926342

>>1926336

I'm going to continue to elaborate. I'm not really sure what's going on with the shape of the nose. I've never see a trippled-ish nose like that( three bumps) but maybe you're going after some reference or something. You should use more color contrast in this picture, more blue color as shading. I think it doesn't really look realistic how you shade the right side of the picture (everything turns shady and dark). However this picture is very detailed so you've got that going for you. His lower lip is also a problem, it could be plastic, it's so thin and isn't colored like a real lip.

When you're coloring lips they're more of a disgusting pale red, not that strong of a red. The way you put the white on the lips to color it makes me think of it like something else than lips. Make the lip softer, it's stretching so there should be a difference in it's width but there's really none. And color the lip a little bit more pink-gray-(pale red).

Also the insides of his mouth are red, it's supposed to be pinkish. His left eye seems to have way big of an iris. I think you could vastly improve on the hair by adding thin highlights into them.
