Task for today: Mermaid. Let's start with something easy.

I found that mermaids either fall into some 'Ariel Little Mermaid' shit, or some Harry Potter Abe Sapien human fish things, so I tried to be original in that regard but I found it next to impossible.

Mermaids are usually thought of as small creatures, and I thought it would induce a greater sense of scale, like, 'Holy shit, that mer thing is actually fuck mchuge.'.
That was going to be my lame attempt at trying to inject some story telling into the whole thing because the character is so bland.
The thing was bland as it is, and I didn't want to give it spear or some shit like that, so this is all I could come up with.

Originality is worthless if you sacrifice any sense of good design for it. Clichés, no matter how overdone tend to be rooted in decent design ideas, which is why they became a cliché in the first place. Like how in many old legends, mermaids lead fishermen to their watery grave by hypnotizing them with their beauty. Hence ever since, mermaids are associated with a beautiful human body and face

The other cliché you mention, the Abe Sapien human fish thing is based on making it a more functional, modern design, deviating from legends and folk tales, which also makes sense considering it's a lifeform that lives underwater, it doesn't need human skin, breasts, a human nose, regular human hands etc.

If you go out of your way to ingore both the creature's mythological origin AND the logical functional design choices based on their natural inhabitat, purpose, lifestyle etc, you will not end up with a good character /creature design, no matter what.

okay the good, I like the gesture, the posing of the arms and such. it looks like she would be playing with fish

the not so good
-skin color for the body is green, but face is normal skin color?

-no neck?

-scale texture does not follow the curves and forms from the body, so it looks out of place, the reflective light on the tail looks out of place too.

-portion of the tail is uncolored or you chose a poor color to color it

it looks like you blocked in the colors after making the background, then added the line. not too bad of a strategy but one more suited for people more advanced then us.

-the glowing orbs in the background are all roughly the same color giving them no distance, and also making it strange when some of the orbs lie over her body

-background itself is far too unrefined. it needs to be sharper, all i see now is blobs and shapes, not something recognizable as kelp or seaweed

what i would do is focus more on making a b&w version before coloring. if your looking to do something more conceptual, don't worry about the background, but if its more catering to illustration the background should be fleshed out and appealing to the shape and design of the creature, not a void to focus on the creature
