ITT: Name the first artist that pops into your head. Got em? Okay, now study a picture by them.

Go!

Thought of Frank Miller. How does one study Frank Miller?

I dearly hope you're joking. That's how artists learn. You know, Vilppu, before he became a teacher, studied from the Old Masters every day. But this applies to all artists. Take an artist who you like for one reason, and cherry pick it and study how they did that.

Shit, I have no experience with values (it shows, too), but I learned that, from this, they're pretty fucking fun, I enjoyed doing this, and I want to do more.

you will learn from that, trust me.

The Old Masters painted realistically. Miller is extremely stylized. Theres nothing to learn from copying him other than learning how to be a Frank Miller ripoff.

Studying doesn't have to mean copying. You could e.g. make a pastiche.

The old masters also sketched, gave the basis for gesture as per how Vilppu teaches it, and other things, too. They didn't just paint. No one is saying that you're going to become a ripoff except you. That's a personal choice. This applies to all works, anon.

Vilppu studied the masters for years, and he does not seem like a rip off of them at all.

learning from stylised work is also important. It will teach you new ways of simplifying things and help you develop a style of your own.

Then think of another artist who you believe you can learn from. Christ, why do some people love arguing so much?
