Yep, the Note 4 S pen has 2048 pressure sensitivity levels, around the same as a bamboo tablet I think,

I don´t remember how many Note 2 has but I feel it very responsive even more so after updating to kitkat, I use it mostly for sketching, taking notes and drawing kanji.

As far as the comparison you posed goes, I would definitely get a Note instead of an iPhone, the only con I can think at this moment is that none of the apps I've tried had a lasso tool, the best ones imho (sketchbook Pro and Art Flow, have delightful interfaces and a surprising amount of features but they lack the lasso tool, I contacted the dev of the latter and he/she told that's being considered though).

A small update, I think I got the face better this time, started rendering and fixing more areas, tried to add some burn sienna hue too

>>1906645
Probably fucked up that part back then.

The screen is just right, I wish it was a bit more wider like the very first Note but once you start using it, it just feels right. YMMV of course

Dude, I don't want to insult you, I like your art. However, I think that you're literally wasting your time. All the art you're doing now no matter how much time you spend on it is ultimately a waste of time.

You honestly should be focusing on producing ridiculously rendered pieces of artwork to realism/fantasy or any other concept that modern art follows. Try following film/games/media industry art trends and do that sort of work.

Its when you make a name for yourself, through retarded rendering and extremely powerful pieces of work that you can eventually get to a point where you can begin experimenting with multiple art styles.

Take Dave Rapoza as an example, when he did the Applibot shit he was totally drained from doing that stuff. He made a name for himself, worked on marvel and other massive companies and got extremely wealthy. Now he is experimenting with different styles, and is taking his art easy. Like you are doing now. You need to do the opposite man. You'll always be able to make a name for yourself if you create fully rendered artworks.

You're probably less than 30, you should be spending time making a name for yourself, not making stylistic pieces of artwork, I just really think you're capable of doing a lot more.

pic related: If you can do this, you're wasting your time right now doing the other art.

You own your life anyways, I can only comment as a concerned viewer but again do what you think is best.

Something else, FiRez. These other comments to and about you here brought it to the forefront of my mind. I seriously believe your oversaturation of this board, constantly seeking critique, is going to stunt your ability to see your own mistakes, and that's one of the most important parts of developing the skill. It's a little more forgivable for pieces mainly from imagination, but it is ridiculous to see everyone catching all these mistakes and problems FOR you in every single draw thread. You need to hone your ability to catch these things yourself, ESPECIALLY when you're doing straight up copies as studies! It's right there in front of you, the answers are all there! Just slow down and analyze, that too is a skill that needs to be developed.

I dunno if you're aiming to be one of /ic/'s darlings or if you think that you're going to use /ic/ as your fan base or what, but seeing every iteration of every damned piece in every damned draw thread is OBNOXIOUS. It makes me dislike you a little more each time. I'm getting tired of /ic/ being "the FiRez show".

I do appreciate your comment so please be assured that I try hard to draw and paint a bit less shitty with each piece.

I'm actually 30 and have been drawing for mere 2 years, so at this point I'm not concerned about monetizing/making a name, I want to get decent before start thinking about that.

Heck I'm still watching/reading content about fundamentals.

Also, I do happen to notice some of my own errors and comment about them in further progress posts which I would say aren't as numerous as they used to.

As I said before, I'm not concerned about that, at least not at this point. I want to get a better command of the drawing language before trying to earn a living/change careers.

I use a trip because the site allows me to do so, and I think it helps me to use 4chan in a more productive way (just my case ofc).

Also don't worry /ic/ is hardly about me, I bet a considerable amount of my occurrences are just from the usual troll.

Well for starters I think you should try to make your work a little online-presentable. Scale down your work so the largest side is 1000 max, this will also help keep the file size down. You're going to want to rotate your art so it's properly oriented. Let's say ten people want to look at your art, do you think it's better for ten people to have to copy your big image onto their computers and rotate it themselves or for you to take a few seconds to rotate it before you post it? All computers have basic image manipulation software that can accomplish these two things.

If you have an image manipulation software that's less than basic, you can even take a moment to even out the lighting of your photo/scan by either running over the corners with the dodge tool or reverse vignette.

That being said you need to take the time to more accurately capture the details of the subject. I know for a fact that no human on earth has concentric circles for an ear. Take the time to look at the made by the forms of the ear. You're missing out nostrils and I'm sure there was a great deal more going on in the lip/chin area that two lines. Push yourself man. Hesitant, scratchy lines make for poor glasses. Use your eraser and get rid of the non-descriptive lines that don't follow the curve. Take your time and pencil in those smooth, parallel lines to describe this sleek mechanical form. Eyes are a window into the soul, they can make or break a portrait. Put more time into those. They're just rushed, scratchy rhombuses.

You can do better.

I've been polishing this turd (top left) for too long, and I just need to start over. It's part of a small series or other characters and (bottom left) is the general aesthetic it will end up as.

Right now, I'm trying to get down values and lighting down. I used a ref for the general shape of head, but the ref has poor all-over lighting.

I've tried to make up more dramatic lighting from my head. Does it look okay? Crits in general are appreciated!

FWIW I only get 4-5 hours of sleep, I quit college for the past 2 periods, so after work I go to go to the nearest cafe and start doing my stuff until they close, then stay up at home until 2am-3am, rinse and repeat for almost every single day. On weekends/leave days I just spend more time at the cafe. As you can infer my social life is basically non-existant, at 30 I feel like I have gotten used to be alone. My dA gallery has most of my completed stuff since I started: http://firez-da.deviantart.com/gallery/

Sorry if that sounds like bragging, all that doesn't beat being younger, healthier, non-depressed, having fewer interests, art-bros, not having a soul sucking-job and being stuck in a 3rd world country.

Too much grey in the shadows. You need to introduce some warmer tones in there. The shadows go waaaay too deep in the face and don't follow the planes too well.

You've over emphasized the forehead's wrinkles, making her look old and the forehead bulbous. The dip under the nose should start from the middle of the nose and get wider and rounder as it heads down, as opposed to two lines of snot from the nostrils. You've over emphasized the neck muscles, especially for such a relaxed pose.

Try not to draw the hair as one slightly textured blob on the head. Identify the flow and the general chunks/shapes in the hair and draw those, remembering that the surface is made of strands, not velvet.

I hate the Brush pattern you used for the fur. You're better off just drawing it yourself.

You're onto a good start. That guy that looks like Warhol on the top left is pretty cool.

I'm going to challenge you to draw more faces and more faces from life. Go to a coffee shop for a few hours and draw everybody you see. You'll get the hang of being sneaky about it. Just draw them when they're reading or on their laptops. If you're too tripped out about that, maybe sketch somewhere else in public.

Shoot, you could even try constructing a few heads out of clay so you can *feel* the forms and get a better visual library of them. I'm actually thinking about doing that soon.

Scratchy textured edges are generally not favored here. Clean lines look more pleasing and confident.

Look up Proko's video on how to draw hair. It might help a bit to study drapery and planes of that in order to get the hair going well.

As with all, study!

The kanji isn't random. Although you could argue it's pretentious, it's a graphic signature I use to sign all of my work (so it's not just arbitrary). It just means 'nothing' becusae I like the look of kanji character but I wanted one that meant nothing in particular so I took that in the literal sense.

It might've been funnier for him just to have the chimp dead and dissected next to him while he dispassionately examines its brain in a machine or under a microscope. That would be a little bit of a tongue in cheek reference to the old story of killing the goose who laid the golden egg/science sort of taking the wonder out of things by over-examining them. the scientist got so swept up in the wonder and potential of the chimp's perceived abilities/future he destroyed it in an attempt to better understand it/replicate it.

thanks man, I think it's just one of the default rectangle texture brushes on photoshop. Settings are just basic, I'm not the type to tweak with settings on photoshop I just use the opacity and size toggle buttons in CS5 as I need them, I work with just opacity most of the time and turn size pressure on when I need it for tapering shapes or line sketching, it's terrible for blocking.

just fuck around with a lot of the brushes and see what feels good, I find that rectangular shaped brushes with texture inside work best for small brushes while actual shaped brushes work better for larger brushes and higher resolutions.

The one thing I know about water and reflective stuff in general is the Fresnel effect.
Basically, the lower the viewing angle, the more reflective a surface will look. Check out the globe in the picture, and note that there's a big chunk of sky being reflected. However, you will see it only gets really bright at the edges. Nearer to the center, where the viewing angle is higher, more perpendicular, the reflection is less intense.
Anyway, I'm not too knowledgeable on this subject, but something you might find helpful is this:
http://seblagarde.wordpress.com/2013/09/08/water-drop-4a-reflecting-wet-world/
It's the blog of a graphics programmer and he has a series of posts studying reflections and wet surfaces and stuff. You may find some helpful information in it.

Im sure you're not overpainting, i mean if your goal is to make it like photograph, then it's in vain, because it already exists.
It would make sense to make a copy of your keys, in case you lose one or a copy of traditional painting, in case original gets stolen or destroyed. With digital, computer can make a perfect copy and it doesn't matter how many you have.
There are better ways to study if that's your goal.

It's not a malicious critique or anything, it's just bluntly put. If the artist knows that in his WIP the values are a bit clamped then he can just disregard the critique, he'll get around to it. If he didn't feel like the values are clamped then it's best to field that opinion so he can at least consider it.

I lean towards having your overall value hierarchy laid in near the beginning, though, so I'm biased.

>>1909083

It's looking lovely so far. I'll start this out by saying it's much past 4AM over here, I'm exhausted, and I've no idea of your working process or intentions with the piece besides the Mike bit. However, I hope this helps:

I agree with the first critique that the values are a bit clamped, overall, and even if you were going to get around to them I'd say at least lay them in real quick so you have a better feel for the entire piece with relatively little effort. Even though it kind of hurts to scribble over the nice subtle variation, here's at least an idea. Also, I threw in a few occlusion shadows for fun.

Anyways, I think what's saving you right now are the values on the main character - they read well. Your color temperatures and how they're reacting with the character, however, needs clarification. You've set it up nicely where you have that really deep blue fill on the right and the cold key light from the left, but it lacks dimensionality in the resulting color temperatures and the way the form turns with color. The hat says that the light is very very cold and saturated, his face says that it's only mildly saturated and harsh, the parchment says that it's a warm light, and the background says nothing at all.

Mike is a good person to look to for this sort of thing, so you're right on the money there. Look at how he turns his form with temperature in a very obvious way, and how he uses his lights.

Also, it's about as subtle as Zen Pencils but whatever.

it looks great, I feel like you could it pop more by adding some more contrast between the guy and the background.

I added contrast in hue saturation and value but you can limit that to whatever you feel is appropriate, I feel like it has kind of a cool 90s Hip-Hop magazine print look to it, so you might want to keep the hue kind of muted unlike what I went for.

I disagree, I think the thought bubble shaped panels are enough to indicate that it's in his imagination. That being said the comic does still kidn of suck, the ending doesn't make sense at all, regardless if he's imagining the prior events or not.

oh wow lol i love the feel you gave to it, totally gives it that 90s feel. I would do something like that but i dont think it really fits in with the kind of music he makes. look him up incase you havent heard of him: Joey Bada$$

I'm not from here. I know nothing of art but I immediately recognized what photo this was based off of and from the thumbnail thought it was in fact a photo. So from an uncultured and artitically challenged swing such as myself. Well done.

Also greetings from /k/.

It's way too corny, I don't see this working at all. Actually, I don't see offering art (drawings, songs, etc) to women as an effective seduction method at all; I did it a few times when I really liked them and it always bombed, whereas just treating them like bitches got them easily. Art for sex or love is an awful deal.

Learning to draw at all, for there's nothing anywhere near proper there.

However, to answer your question in particular, insofar as a plastic form hair doesn't work as thousands of vectorized lines but as locks, so you need to get a good grasp of volume, light and dynamics in order to depict it believably (heck, even manga/anime hair works under this principle).

First time trying to do some stuff lit from below.

I guess my main problem is how to tell how much detail to include? And how to make things look less "rough" and more refined. I redid that damn knight like 3 times and he still looks like shit.

Any help?

any crits on these 30 second "gestures"?

been doing these daily for the past weeks, theres some obvious improvement but I've seen so many pages of this shit I need someone elses input I think

what are the most obvious things I should focus on with the next page of these, iyo?

I notice in a lot of them the spine is missing since I start with the 3 main masses of head chest and pelvis, then add spine and limbs as I see fit, maybe I should get back to general gesture instead of structure

Dont rely on circles or ovals. Establish the gesture in one line, Draw a line going from the head to the foot. Still pay attention to contours, but quickly. Don't "pet" your lines. draw a line an commit to it. When you draw over a line you are wasting the time you can dedicate to better stroke precision.
