Hi. I'm new to /ic/ so please excuse my lack of knowledge. Can someone answer my questions?

I've been planning on 2D animate, which software would you recommend me to start in?

Why do people usually place a gray background and paint over it? What's the point of it?

Grey, mid tone backgrounds are neutral. It doesn't interfere with your perception of the values of the subject matter being drawn on it.

this optical illusion illustrates what I mean. A and B are actually the same shade of grey, but it is the surrounding tones that make us perceive them differently, making them appear to be different values.

My eyes hurt, when I look too long on a bright, white canvas. It's as simple as that.

>2D animation
TVPaint Animation 10 Pro if you want to make frame by frame animation.
Flash if you're more into using tweens (you can use it for frame by frame, but TVPaint have better brushes and more tools. Flash was created to make games and shit, not to make pro animations).
In anime studios people use Retas (there is pirate version somewhere), but I wouldn't recommend it for a beginner. Just keep in mind that in future you might want to try it.
If you're too lazy to learn new software, then somewhere on youtube is a tutorial about using Photoshop to make animations.
