i asked myself the same question when i heard it the first time. i had heard of coltrane previously, and while i appreciated his tunes i couldn't exactly get into them. I only listened to instrumental music while drawing because anything with lyrics made me distracted.
Later on I listened to this guy talk about how music will always be a distraction and make it harder to multitask. Apparently plenty of studies have shown that having music on will make people worse at what they're doing, and people who think they do better while listening to music are suscept to actually be worse off.
Recently I stopped listening to music altogether, and now I actually feel more focused with drawing and painting.

i like stuff from pretty much every genre of music i've ever heard. so depends on the mood i'm in. sometimes it'll be the radio: alternative rock, 60s 70s 80s 90s, classical, electronic, soundtrack, hard rock, rock, experimental, top tracks, foreign language modern/traditional, dup, garage, downtempo, dance, metal, techno, jazz, country instrumental, modern instrumental, choral, pop, indie, glitch, etc.
other times it'll be full albums over youtube, random people's playlists, online radios based on a certain music artist, collected songs of a single artist into a playlist, songs stored on my computer, doesn't matter.
